WWW Passing of an Institution: SF Lusty Lady to shut down

After gamely putting up a fight for the last decade against the erosion of the peep market, the long standing Lusty Lady in San Francisco, the first unionized, employee-owned business in the nude-show line, have lost their lease.

Landlord apparently walked off the table and gave them short notice so it may have been they finally lost patience with giving a break to a weakened tenant, and may even have had offers, or perceived opportunities, they were seeing slip away.

Kind of a bittersweet thing, I was around the area not that long ago and it was a bit of a small item of note in the tour, to mention that this was a long-time club where now the girls held shares in the business.

FWIW the entire "Barbary Coast" has been going corporate anyway, even long-established names like Condor are now DejaVu franchisees, more than half a dozen in just two blocks.

With all the free internet porn out there, peep shows are going the way of rotary dial phones. Why fight the hassle of traffic and pay to park when you can get a visual from the comfort of your home or hotel room.

I don't see internet sites displacing stripclubs, unless someone invents a "beam me up, Scotty" machine.

Interesting that the owners wouldn't renew their lease and the owners happen to be Deja Vu. I have a feeling they'll roing to open a brand new club in it's place.

I think in-person experiences will always be different (and usually better) than on-screen visuals...!

But then again, I personally also enjoy the energy/ experience of live theater and performance art, and i think the video versions/ recordings of those same performances usually suck in comparison.

So sad!!! I really wanted to visit, and I love co-ops. It's always been a dream of mine to work at a worker-owned club.

In researching this club though, I did read some eyebrow raising reviews. I'd post, but I hate to speak ill of the dead! Anyhow, I'd really love to see something like this in Austin, with maybe a more normative business model and less jizz flying around? I think it could really work. Strippers, (and I think especially my co-workers at Expose) are more business-savvy and smarter than people give us credit for.

This is the second historic adult establishment to close in SF in the span of like a year.

Back when I danced in SF, all the clubs were really struggling for business and money. And even foot traffic. I would not be surprised if more of them start to close. It really is one of the worst places to dance.

The issue is, most spendy customers do not live in SF. Most like at least a 30 or 45 minute drive outside SF. And the Bay Area does have really bad traffic, so its usually an even longer drive. (Having lived in both the Bay Area & SF, as well as LA, I can say that during the hours of like 4pm-7pm, traffic is worse in the Bay Area. It is completely stopped.) Public transportation isn't 24 hours. The last train into or out of SF is at like midnight.

So there is just no incentive for guys to step foot in SF clubs. Most of the businessmen tend to come in before 7pm, and are gone by like 8 or 9pm. Weekends can be decent, but its a young party crowd... so you can make money, but off doing several strings of dances- not champagne rooms. Gold Club relies on travelling businessmen, but they also have a lot of girls and tend to only favor the runway model look.

Its, overall, just a really bad place to dance.

Not to mention, tech companies that were once in the South Bay and the East Bay, are now actually moving into San Francisco the city. Taking over the Tenderloin (which already gentrified a few years ago), the Mission, and just all over SF. SF also got trendy in the last couple years, so now a lot of other young people are moving there for school and what not. So there is a second rental "boom" - but with young people. Not with spenders. So crazy because the apartment I acquired there like 5 years ago now rents for DOUBLE what it did when I rented it 4 years ago. So crazy. I'm glad I'm not in that city anymore.

But yeah, I can see why this happened.

Condor has been Deja Vu for years now. Since like 2008 I think. Or 2007.
