Dizzy Cam / Encoder issues... Driving me nuts!

For the past few days, I haven't been able to cam on SM. I'm not sure if its the webcam itself or the encoder giving me issues. I'm using a Logitech c920. I'll be camming for a less than five minutes and all of a sudden my encoder preview cam window will be flickering. Of course all my traffic goes away after that... so I ask if anyone can see me and they reply with a simple "No".

Any idea why this could be happening? I'm using an A8 Quad Core laptop and I'm spyware free. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I have the same exact kind of cam, the Logitech c920, and I couldn't cam on SM either last night (and it was my first time trying). I'm glad to hear it's most likely because I was wireless and not the camera itself. I'm having a different very frustrating problem, however--I'm not getting the flickering, but each and every time a guest logged on, one second later, it said they'd logged off. This happened about 30 times. A few times, they would make it as far as saying 'hi', then it would show them as logged off, and a few tried to come right back, and the same thing happened. But most got booted instantly. From other threads on here, it seems as if the Encoder is disconnecting just enough to boot them from my room, but not enough to get the 'disconnected' message. So I guess I need to hard-wire as well. I was wondering about that, do I just buy a cable cord and connect it from my laptop straight into my modem? I know it's just going to take a while to get all this figured out, but I am feeling very discouraged.

The flickering is a result of your bit rate dropping and then eventually (hopefully) coming back up again. You will see one flicker for each change in bit rate. Next time it happens, look at your encoder log and check to see what your bit rate is dropping to. If it gets low enough, your connection will drop altogether. SM has us configure our settings so that the encoder tries to compensate for these connectivity issues before dropping the stream altogether. This was implemented to try to appease models who were dropping gold shows left & right. Unfortunately, for those who don't do gold shows, that just translates into guys leaving private anyway.

Even if you eventually get back up to where you should be, you really should sign off and back on again when it happens. The encoder doesn't seem to fully recover & function properly after this happens. It's your internet connection.

Thank you for the replies, ladies!

I'm using Time Warner - Roadrunner right now. 30 DL and 5 UL speeds. I am using wireless right now, and didn't really give it a thought until it was mentioned here. I'll need to buy a cord and try plugging it in directly to see if that helps. Thanks again everyone!
