Default Giving yourself a Brazilian wax: good or bad idea?

Has anyone ever tried to give themselves a Brazilian wax? I'm starting to get a lot more money conscious and trying to save where I can. So I invested in a Brazilian waxing kit that I got off of amazon. It should be here on Wednesday. If I can actually go through with waxing myself then it'll have paid for itself in the first use, but I'm starting to question if I can inflict that much pain on myself haha. Any tips or self waxing experiences you ladies want to share with me?

I'm assuming you already pay to have a professional wax you. Rate the pain on a scale from 1 to Death. Anything higher than a 6 should just be done by someone else. I know I've always waxed my moustachio myself, and I'd rate the pain at a 1 1/2, maybe, and the wax lasts forever. I did try to wax my vagina myself once. Awful, awful, awful. Just. Bad news for everyone involved. It's a no-go to self-Brazilian for normal people. Try it. Report back. I'm interested.

Ooo, that's something I would never do myself. Maybe if I was just doing the bikini line, but a full Brazilian? I would mostly be worried about causing more pain than necessary or missing stuff/messing something up. When they do it at the salon, it's not like they just stick a few slabs on and pull everything off within minutes. They do certain chunks here and there and different directions in different places, and have you contort your leg this way/that way or pull the skin taut so they can get a certain spot better. And all the contorting you'd have to do to make sure you were getting everything or to see what you were doing, you may not even be in the proper position to get a certain area correctly + doing this while in pain... I dunno, it just seems like one of those things where you have to figure estheticians get trained for a reason. It's probably more complicated than it seems to actually do it right.

I did it, but I took shots of vodka between strips and yelled curse words. I stopped when I assumed all waxes were created equal and used my microwavable wax intended for general facial stuff as a stand-in for my bikini area wax. Yeah, no. Do not ever do that. All of my follicles were bloody, and barely any hair was fully removed.

    Otherwise, my tips would be:
make sure your skin is clean beforehand; aggravated follicles and dirty skin do not go well together
make sure the wax isn't too hot before you apply
apply in the direction of hair growth and place the strip the same way; pull the strip the opposite way
    don't skip the calming lotion

Hehehe sounds like this isn't the best idea I've ever had, but I'll let you all know how it goes so you can at least get some entertainment out of my probable failed attempt to wax myself. I have tried waxing my bikini line before with some cheap wax strips that you rub between your hands to warm up that i bought from walmart, but that didnt go too well. But it was such a long time ago that I'm foolish enough to think I want to try again, but with better supplies this time. The kit I bought comes with hard wax, which hurts less than the strip wax for me. And it also comes with an instructional DVD on how to do brazilian waxing. The DVD is not meant to show you how to do the waxing on yourself, it's meant for an esthetician to do waxing on clients. But I figure at least it'll give me an idea of the right way to go about it. I just don't know if I have the pain tolerance to do it to myself lol, but I'm gunna give it a shot. Wish me luck! Lol.

On a side note, I'm saving money to go to school for esthetics. If I fail at doing my own brazilian at least I can practice on other less sensitive body parts haha.

I do my own waxes. The first one sucks, but it gets easier. be sure to buy a pro kit. I have the Gigi warmer, hard wax, and oils to make sure it doesnt stick to my skin. I also have the wax remover, it comes in really handy. Be sure to use the same towel every time, because it will ruin it. Don't put it in the washer either, the wax will get in it.

I did this one time, with a cheap sally hansen strip kit thingy. Ugh it was awful, I was bowlegged for the rest of the day. I remember it was my freshman year of college, and my roommate's mom and grandma came to visit - they had just bought all of this stuff for our new apartment and I had to help set up/hang blinds/build furniture, and every time my thighs rubbed together I wanted to cry. They could tell I was in pain but I couldn't explain why! Lol, so embarassing...

So moral of the story - if you do it, make sure you know what you're doing (I didn't!) and use a reliable, positively reviewed product.
“The irony of commitment is that it's deeply liberating -- in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around like rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life.”

I've done it myself. The Gigi wax kit from beauty supply store works better than drug store kit because it has the warmer that keeps the temperature at a consistent warm temperature making wax easier to spread on.

I had to drink some alcohol first

I'd only recommend doing it yourself after you've had professional waxes and can replicate the techniques they use.

Also hard wax is supposed to be better for bikini area.

I get ingrowns too easily and it takes me too long when I attempt myself so I let the pros handle the tricky areas like Brazilian bikini

Yes, that's the one that I got! The Gigi Brazilian Wax Kit. Tsepmet1, you give me hope! Lol. I also get ingrowns and razor burn, that's why I switched to waxing in the first place, but it gets expensive. I'm only working a vanilla job right now and trying to save money to go back to school so I've been trying to DIY anything that I can to save some cash. I diy my own shellac nails and pedis most of the time too.
I've had some laser hair removal, but that was over a year ago and a lot of the hair has started to grow back. There is a lot less on the actual bikini line part than before but in the middle or on the lips it's as if I've never had any laser done at all.
Wine will probably be involved when my kit comes on Wednesday. Lol.

I did it once myself and just yelled HIYAH! with every strip pulled. It wasn't that painful(I've had two kids completely naturally), but it is kind of awkward and I'd rather have someone else do it. I think that it is more time consuming when you do it yourself as well. I'd save money via home pedicures and manicures before I'd try to give up the wax.

Razors were invented for a reason people!

I know, I know, stubbles and ingrowns etc. I was bikini line waxed once. No thanks, never again. Also I have read that Red Hair grips more tighly and therfore hurts more tobe pulled out. Not sure whether I believe that but then again...

Well, I'm Brazilian myself and I always do the "Brazilian wax" style. It's so easy to find salons that offers this service here, it's not so expensive and I don't think it's THAT painful... The effects of BRWax last about two weeks in my body. I fully recommend it.

Thumbs up Re: Giving yourself a Brazilian wax: good or bad idea?

[RIGHT]Ok here's an update! I got the kit and immediately went to work. It took me about an hour and 45 minutes. And it was very painful. Quite a few times I considered stopping in the middle and calling it quits. But I eventually got through it and was so proud of myself! Lol. I just gave myself my second Brazilian day before yesterday. It was much less painful and messy. I adjusted my technique and finished in about an hour and a half. Still a long time, but hey, I'm saving $60 a month. And I'm hoping my time will improve over time. So I would say it was a success!

Yep. I don't know this "Gigi Brazilian Wax Kit", I just go to the salon to have my "girl" waxed and takes no more than 15 minutes for me to be full shaved.

I think if I tried to do my own Brazilian Wax, I'd end up in the hospital with burns and my butt sealed shut and god know what else.... But I also can't paint the nails on my right hand, so....

P.S. I've had good luck with the laser. It costs more than waxing, upfront, but quickly pays for itself....

congrats on being able to go through with it! I've since stopped waxing, but after you do it a few times you start getting pretty pumped for it! (or at least I did! endorphinz man) I'm glad you figured it out without injuring yourself!

I agree with laser. In the long run you save so it's more of an investment and less painful (In my opinion) but also I guess you'd have to factor in your hair type. Mine is dark and thick but my friend who has thinner hair doesn't find it so painful to regularly remove her hair by herself.

Or dark skinned people... I had it done 6 or so years ago, so the technology may have improved a bit. Don't know. But when I had it done it said that it was best for really pale people with really dark hair. It didn't work perfectly, but I'm still very happy with the results. Was thinking of getting a Tria (Treo?). Something like that to touch up a couple hair here and there. Maybe do my legs....
