Default today's bad unemployment number attributed to ... cutbacks in the Porn industry !!!

(snip)"After months of rock-hard gains in stocks, and an extended period of firming in the headline jobs data, some are noting that today's limpness in the jobs data is temporary, driven by an unexpected choke down of staffing in the porn industry. As Bloomberg reports, a big surprise in today's report was a 6% decline in the number of people working in the "motion picture and sound recording industries," which can be attributed to a shutdown in the porn-film industry that doesn’t reflect the underlying health of the economy.

It turns out that, as WaPo notes, the U.S. porn industry stopped working for a week after an actress tested positive for HIV. Once it became clear that no one else had the disease, work resumed. The one-week shutdown would affect the jobs numbers for the month of August but tells us nothing about the broader state of the U.S. economy. Had those 22,000 people been working, employment growth in August would have modestly beaten expectations.

Fed officials are probably blowing off this month’s weakness for that very reason. It seems we should all be pulling for a revival of the porn industry to raise the economy from its slumber."(snip)

I saw this article on the same thing:
    http://www.businessinsider.com/no-po...-report-2013-9

It says workers in the porn industry weren't counted as unemployed because they were only out for a week, and you would have had to been out of work for the entire month to be counted as unemployed. From the above article:

    -snip-
I spoke with John Mullins, an economist in the Current Employment Statistics division at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. He explained to me that the August jobs report counts you as "employed" if you were on the payroll for any part of the pay period including August 12. The porn industry shutdown ran from August 21 to 27. So, while the shutdown put a substantial number of people out of work for a week, their job losses would not have shown up in the BLS report.

^^^ agreed that the HIV related shutdown in the porn industry couldn't have really affected this month's jobless numbers. Even the NY Times now agrees .... see

I think the larger point was that Bloomberg and other mainstream financial news outlets were cleverly attempting to use the porn industry shutdown as a plausible 'explanation' for this month's job losses.

Of course, the same mainstream financial news outlets also mostly failed to report that last month's jobless numbers estimates were revised downward by 58,000, and that the previous month's jobless numbers estimates were again revised downward by an additional 16,000, in this month's report.

It is a fact, however, that the 'film industry' did experience the highest percentage of job losses of any US economic sector last month, as well as experiencing a huge decline relative to it's own historical employment levels.

Various alternate explanations for this are being offered, from a failure to curb 'illegal downloads', to the 'outsourcing' of film production to lower cost ( and/or higher tax credit ) countries like Canada and eastern Europe and NZ.

However, one source claims that the bulk of the job losses in this sector have in fact been the result of cutbacks in employment at movie theaters ... because movie theater employees comprise a surprisingly large percentage of total film industry related workers ( albeit at the lowest pay rates ). I find this to be a much more plausible 'explanation' than the porn industry shutdown ! And this plausibility is made even greater given recent announcements from the Regal Cinemas chain ( which I won't repeat ).

For dancers and camgirls, there are arguably quite a few 'parallels' which can be drawn between the economics of the film industry in general and the economics of their own particular businesses. In essence, both provide a 'product' that is non-essential but highly desireable as 'entertainment'. As such, both rely on capturing 'discretionary' spending dollars from customers that will only be available after essential expenditures ( food, energy, rent, taxes, insurance ) have first been made by those potential customers. But there is a fundamental difference too ... i.e. the US film industry can and does earn huge revenues from 'sales' of their 'product' in China and other foreign countries, markets which camgirls have limited ability to access and which dancers have zero ability to access.

At any rate, circling back to the original point, any time that mainstream news outlets can sprinkle a little T and A into their news coverage, it increases circulation ( no pun intended ).
