Default Does anyone strip AND work a 9-5 job?

I'm debating on whether to accept an offer for a 9-5 job. If I ever got a full time job, this would be the one I want. It's a great opportunity. However it will be a HUGE paycut to what I'm used to making part time dancing... I'd be making about half as much working full time 9-5 as I would dancing part time. I'd rather dance full time but my family is dying for me to get a "real" job, and this really is my dream job for real jobs if there ever was one.

Does anyone do both? I think I would only be able to work Friday nights and Saturdays, and I'd have to find a club further away to work. I don't know if this will be worth the hassle, or if a club will let me work only 1 night a week, and a weekend night at that... I have a feeling that any club that will let me do that won't be worth the $$ and the travel. In addition, I"m not sure if I'd be overworking myself by working 9-5 and weekends on top of that.

Any opinions or experience with this?

I've danced along with having a regular job but my job was more like 20-32 hours a week when I was traveling to dance and there were some weeks when I was barely working the day job.

One thing to keep in mind ( I just had a friend who was telling me she wasn't happy making 36k a year ) :
If you are getting health insurance ... that's about $400 a month .... nearly $4800 value per year !
If you are getting retirement matching , it could be worth $100-$200 a month .... or $1200-$2400 a year !
Paid vacation and holidays .... worth more !
That 35K offer may end up being MORE if you add up the benefits.

But .... as a dancer .... you can probably make 50K++ annually if you know what you are doing !
There are just the obvious risks dancing ... risk of injury ( especially if you choose not to pay for health insurance ) .... risk of burn out ect.

I did it for about four months and only stopped when I took a new vanilla job in a different city. My club was open until 5am on weekends, I lived an hour away and managed. And definitely don't discount the benefits you will receive from a regular job. I would say go for it! Stripping was your only income before now, it'll be easy to switch back again if the regular job doesn't work out.

i've just started working a vanilla job on top of stripping..its more per-diem so idk if it counts in this discussion. but i don't want to quit dancing although i earn a great living with this one because dancing is still a great income and there is only a limited amount of time i can cash in on it..not ready to let that go just yet. but on the other hand im pursuing vanilla work for when i quit dancing so that i won't stress about what im going to do.
i've switched to weekends, although weekend DAYS are the only shifts they'll give me on friday and saturday (figures), but i've worked at a lot of clubs that will let you pick your own days as long as you meet the required number of shifts..very busy clubs too.
if you are working a 40 hour week i would think you would be absolutely exhausted by the end of 5 days and the thought of working 7 days a week..idk about anybody else but i sure as hell can't do that!

^If you really think it's best to take the day job or apply to your dream day job then go for it-it's your career and might be best for you long term. I know plenty of dancers who work 9-5 jobs or study full time and dance 1-3 nights a week. Even if you could only work Saturday nights-you would still be adding to your over all income, without dancing interfering with your performance at your 9-5 job. Travelling to dance might be expensive and annoying, depending on how long the commute is. Why not buy a nice wig and continue working in your area?

I work 8-5 Monday through Friday (40 hrs. a week) at a high-stress, large-workload vanilla job, and work Saturday day shifts (7 hrs.)... I also have 2 kids. Although my day job is exhausting, and my family life is busy & full, I don't feel that the addition of the Saturday shift is too much... it's actually kind of... relaxing? Maybe that sounds odd, but there ya go.
I have stripped full-time, too, so I know the feeling of relying on good nights to get the bills paid... and, I must say, this situation feels much better. I use my stripping money to actually better my family's financial position in a real, meaningful way. Vanilla job just pays the bills, and provides the all-important health insurance.
I, like Simone, feel the need to cash in while I can... in my case, because I will be 39 freaking years old in a couple of months, and realize I can't do it forever, but think of the thousands that I wouldn't make if I quit now!
I do worry sometimes about one of my vanilla co-workers discovering me at the club (it would be a huge scandal if it happened), but there are a couple bigwigs I wish would come see me there! I can keep a secret if they can... and I can also keep their $$$.

I've done it. I kind of do it now, though I only work 4.5 days a week in the office with one weekday afternoon off which I spend at the club for a day shift. I actually walk to the club from my office, so I don't think it's necessary to travel far to keep dancing - I know my coworkers though and we are a small office without any strip clubbers, so I'm safe.

It does get tiring, but the supplemental money from dancing makes it worthwhile. I'm not sure what your situation with regulars is, but working less often can actually be quite good because they know they can only see you on x day each week, so you get more of them in at once and that x day can be quite lucrative - at the very least you rarely end up with a mediocre shift because of it. I also find that I'm less stressed at work since I know my paycheck will cover all expenses, and that translates into a better mood and more money.

I think it's worth taking that job and dancing once or twice a week on top. I mean, if the work sucks, you can always quit, but if it really is a dream job, you'd be crazy to pass that up and not give it a shot now that it's been offered to you. Keep in mind, you can always move up the corporate ladder and get raises, not to mention the non-cash but valuable benefits associated with the corporate world. Hey, you can always try and negotiate for a slightly higher starting salary!

I say take the opportunity. If you end up hating the day job, you can always quit. At least you will have tried! I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing I turned down a potential dream job just because I can make more money as a stripper.

Carmen_b gave some great words of advice up there - with all of the benefits you get when working a 9-5 job, it is SO worth it! And by taking the 9-5 job, you'll be advancing your career. You'll have something to put on your resume so you don't end up in that dreaded two-year-stripper-resume-gap situation. Unless you know for a fact that you have it in yourself to be a career dancer (like Melonie), taking the straight job is a smart move. It will feed your soul in a way that stripping probably doesn't, even if you're still enjoying dancing. And the steady paycheck that comes with a straight job is really nice: you'll never go to work wondering if you might not make enough for tipout. It's guaranteed money in your bank account. Some people find that this makes it a very convenient cover for the money you make while stripping - even if you only dance a couple of times a month.

Remember, life isn't all about money! As long as you won't be completely sacrificing your quality of life, taking a lower-paying job with the potential to work your way up the ladder over time is very worth it. The satisfaction and security you get from the straight job will make the temporary 'pay cut' worth it.

Focus on following the path that's best for you in the long run. Dancing will always be there for you if you need it.

Ditto-- take the opportunity. If it was a shit job you'd hate, I'd say no. But dancing should be supplementing (unless you're a dyed in the wool stripper for life which some of us are) your income to get you to where YOU want to be. Dream job? Heck yes. There's the intangibles such as liking your job and trust me when I say-- having dancing as a side job makes it more enjoyable. You'll be able to enjoy both jobs more because you're not giving anything up, and luckily dancing is flexible enough that you could work 1-3 days a week, or 1-3 days a month. It's up to what your finances need.

The family thing is annoying-- so don't do it for them, but on the other hand don't NOT do it just to spite the pressure they're putting on you either.

Default Re: Does anyone strip AND work a 9-5 job?

I worked full-time at an office for 3 years while dancing twice a week. I could make the weekly salary I made at the office in one shift at the club, I knew I could work 3 nights at the club and have 4 other days off, while making much more than 40 hrs of work + 2 nights at the club.

But I liked having a ''regular'' job on the side. I just felt more accomplished that way, even though at the club I am working, it doesn't really feel like work. The two jobs didn't stimulate me the same way and I also find it hard to work full-time in this industry. Some girls can do it but I couldn't. I feel more grateful for how much I make at the club when I know that I worked 8 hours the day before to make less than half I make in one night. Plus, it is always good to have something to write on your resume. I also found it easier to control my spending habits, my paycheck went to pay the rent and other bills, whereas what I make at the club would be ''fun money'' for restaurants, shopping and most importantly, savings. I just recently quit my job at the office so I could attend university full-time.

I do! It's only 32 hours a week, but it feels like full time. If I can start making the income I need from stripping, I'd much rather only strip than do both.

Also, a couple of ladies touched on this point but I have to agree... possibly the most important benefit of having a steady paycheck coming in is that it erases any sense of desperation while you're working at the club.
If you're dancing for *extra* money, and because you enjoy it, you're just automatically gonna be bubblier and way more fun to hang out with (spend money on) than you would be if you were dancing for your damn life. Not hating at all on those here who are dancing for their damn lives.
If you are successful enough at dancing full-time that you don't have to constantly worry about how your bills are getting paid... awesome. Keep it up. Sure wish I could. But, if dancing is your last hope and you absolutely MUST make a grand tonight or you'll be evicted tomorrow... well, I think we can all agree that it'll show all over your pretty face, and you'll leave with $16... or, feel forced to do things that make you feel like shit in order to get the money you MUST have.
Dudes don't care about our sob stories. Add to that the fact that they love confident, fun chicks who have their shit together, and you have a recipe for profit.

I was working three jobs, including stripping until recently. I had a "regular" 6:30am-3:30pm job complete with awesome health insurance. I loved having the pay check, but I got fired for being late too much. It really limited my sleep to be quite honest. I was always ready to leave the club early so I could go to bed--- i work at a LATE club so it doesnt really get "popping" until after midnight. In a way i am kinda relieved that i am free to strip and stay up as late as I want... LOL

I am about to start doing this, I think. For me, stripping for my rent is just too stressful, and I want decent insurance. I also hate not knowing what kind of money the week will bring. Stripping as bonus cash is a totally different game than "holy shit, I need to make $x or I won't have a roof over my head next month." I am eternally grateful for the industry for allowing me to get out of some shitty situations, pay my rent, and eat, but I just don't have the constitution to be a full-time stripper in a contact-heavy area.

I think you should try the the job out. Stripping isn't going anywhere if you decide the 9-5 isn't for you, but if this is dream job material, I think you should give it a shot.

Let us know how you decide!

I worked 9a-6p and 9p-3a for 2 years of my dancing. They matched my 401k contributions and gave me 2 weeks paid vacation. Toward the end, I had to cut back on my dancing hours because i was sleeping during lunch breaks, having to eat crappy food on the go all the time, had a 2nd baby and never got to see my kids . Finally I quit the day job and went to the club 3 nights so I could spend more time with my kids.

If you choose to do both, schedule nights at the club so that you can still have a normal home life. It can take a toll on you otherwise. It was nice having a reliable check. Plus having the same amount, in cash, from dancing. Monetarily things were fantastic, but since I have 2 kids it wasn't worth it for me.

BTW, I'm a stay at home mom now. The club life just wasn't working for me anymore. If it is just you, I say go for it! If you are young, you can handle having less sleep better than someone in my situation. Make sure to save a big chunk of either the 9-5 income or dancing income. That way things can be easier in the future or if you decide to quit the 9-5.

i'm about to try this - i work as an A/V technician but the work has been really slow, and I had been toying with the idea of moonlighting at some clubs lately. the only problem i think i'm gonna have is they are both physical jobs. I get TONS of bruises all over my body from moving road cases, ladders, etc. any recs on a good body foundation that won't come off easily? otherwise i'm stuck with permanent thigh highs

^Just go for thigh highs. They're sexy and take way less time than body makeup. Unless you're black and blue all over, most people won't be able to see bruises that easily anyway.
