    Default Applying for foodstamps/financial aid/income?

I am getting back on foodstamps. Dont judge me. I am a single mom, I currently live in a city in which the clubs are straight up brothels so I am looking for a vanilla job and for the time being will work once or twice a week until I find something decent. I am wondering how much I should claim that I make bc it varies..some weeks I dont work bc I dont have a sitter or something comes up..will they give me problems when putting my dancing info on the govt forms? Also wondering what I should do as far as applying for financial aid...like I said my income is not steady and for the most part I am now just barely getting by. Thanks ladies.

they have a form you can fill out, at least it was that way with me the one time i went in, and you put down what you make weekly. in my state though, the welfare budget had been cut SOO drastically that you pretty much have to be totally unemployed to receive foodstamps or cash assistance or anything at all.

No judgments from me because just a few years ago it happened to me. But back to getting food stamps...it depends in what state you are in but in California, you have to be low income in order to get the major food stamps, wic, and general aid.Low income in California varies because of the cost of living and the county in which you live in. Also on food stamps, you must be a part-time student in order to receive financial aid still. I hope this helps and good luck.

That is so sad because most people I know would rather help those who are trying their best to get ahead instead of the people who refuse to work at all.

Op, what I would do is kind of give an estimate of an average week. Don't lie because they will find out. Since you are a single mom if you aren't already please go after the dad for child support. It depends of course about welfare depending on the state, some states will not care you dance and others will. Do you have any tax forms? They will ask for those. if it's cash it's a bit different and probably easier to get assistance but probably not with financial aid.

^^^ agreed that there is a huge amount of variation in food stamp eligibility versus income levels that it's impossible to provide much guidance without knowing what state you are living in.

    OP is in Texas. http://www.hhsc.state.tx.us/help/Food/snap.shtml

The site says you can call 211 to get assistance in filling the forms out, or you can go to one of their locations. I imagine someone there will be able to help you best. Good luck.

You can also check out financial assistance for families on the same site: http://www.hhsc.state.tx.us/Help/Fin...sistance.shtml

Honestly, all of these programs require you to be extremely poor to get any assistance. I am not sure you will even qualify if you work at all, which is totally fucked, IMO.

^^^ Federal limits have now taken over for 2013 SNAP eligibility ... with the eligibility threshold for a single parent two child household being $2,069 per month, and with eligibility threshold for a single parent one child household being $1,640 per month, of pre-tax income !!!

^ yup, its ridiculous! and thats pre-tax!! i know a lot of people who can barely pay their rent and are starving who can't get foodstamps..because they "make too much". plus getting aid is a huge pain in the ass,all the paperwork and re-certification and you have to wait ( unless you get emergency foodstamps), its really not worth it if you can get by without. soup kitchens and food panties are a better bet. you have to be absolutely destitute to get welfare

Indeed many Americans are now 'managing' their income levels to remain just below the maximum eligibility threshold. Indeed SNAP benefits are worth $367 per month with one child. Medicaid coverage is potentially worth thousands. Low income housing and utility bill subsidies are worth at least another couple of hundred. This creates a situation where limiting income to $1,639 per month and receiving the cash equivalent of some ~$1000 per month in social welfare benefits now provides a higher net standard of living than earning $2500 per month but paying full shot for food, rent, health insurance, utility bills etc out of your own pocket.

It is ridiculous how working poor can barely survive yet are deemed making too much. However a lazy single mom who decides not to work (and had a bunch of babies out of wedlock)can get plenty. It angers me so much because we should be rewarding those who do the right thing by working (even if it's a minimum wage job)and punishes those who didn't (the welfare queens who keep making babies they can't afford). I had a few friends who lost jobs and took jobs like fast food, yet applied for food stamps and got something like $10 a month. Why apply then?

^^^ unfortunately, your redirection of the thread is headed toward a 'public policy' discussion, which will probably run afoul of SW's politics ban. However, the economic facts are what they are ... that under the existing federal SNAP eligibility standards, people are being incentivized not to work / earn money beyond the point of losing SNAP benefit eligibility.

Another economic fact is that, net of the equivalent cash value of 'lost' benefit eligibility plus the loss of tax credits / increase in income taxes, a 'gap' now exists between annual income levels of ( reusing the above example ) $1,639 per month and ~$2,500 per month where the 2 person 'family's' standard of living definitely becomes worse if the mother chooses to work and winds up earning something between $1,640 and $2,499 a month !!!
