At times I have arrived at clubs near opening time, as some dancers were just showing up. Meeting them at the door and saying hello, I have been struck by the look of disdain on their faces. It occurs to me that perhaps this is how dancers truly feel about “custies.” Inside, outwardly, it’s sweetie this and honey that. Inwardly it’s “you filthy pervert loser.” And the inward feeling is what I see outside the door before the costumes go on. Too bad. We aren’t the people we seem to be in clubs any more than you are. We’re successful. We have good marriages and nice families. We just have a kink we need to indulge once in a while. We’re men, we like to look at beautiful women. We have club personas, too, and club names (as far as any stripper I’ve met is concerned, my name is Jake). Speaking for myself, I don’t imagine that you “are” the women you appear to be when at work. And I “am” not what I appear to be when in a club. I guess we’re all playing roles. I just wish I didn’t sense this underlying disdain. Or do I only imagine it?
