    Hi Ladies,
I'm new here and I've been reading as much as possible. You guys are so awesome and informative and I am truly grateful to find such an amazing resource.

I just signed up for streamate, and I plan to go online very soon. I currently own 2 laptops:

    Primary:

    Macbook pro 13" (Early 2011)
Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Software OS X 10.8.5 (12F37)
500 GB disk with 444 free

Secondary (Sitting in my closet because wireless card stopped working):

    Dell XPS 15" (2009ish)

    Processor
    Intel core 2 duo T8300 @ 2.4GHZ
    Memory 4GB
    Graphics Geforce 8400M GS
    Software Windows Vista home premium
    285 GB C-drive with 200 GB free

So here's my question. I was thinking about removing everything off of my old Dell laptop except for what would be needed to power a logitech c920 webcam and streamate. I know that the encoder suggests I5 processor, but would I be ok with the core 2 duo if there was nothing else running on that laptop. The wireless card not working shouldn't be an issue because I plan to hardwire to internet anyway. Is there anything that i can/should upgrade to make this run more smoothly? Will I be able to attain good quality HD and smooth reliable streaming (Internet speed is at the highest I can purchase from time warner with 30 download and 5 upload).

Or is it better to use my Mac and find a mac compatible camera? The C930e ( ) to be a good option for mac but it's 2X the price of the c920 and I can't find a lot of info on it. There is also the BCC950 ( ) which seems very cool bc of pan/tilt and zoom with remote, but it's even more pricey and there is even less information online about it.

I am comfortable on both platforms, but I prefer my Mac, however it might be nice to use the dell strictly for camming and that leaves the mac free for regular use. I have been reading a lot about mac compatiblity issues with the encoder and webcams and whatnot and I'm just not sure of which route to go. Any help or advice on this would be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks in advance!!

I've noticed things work better using a Windows computer unless you are strictly a MFC and C4S kind of girl. But the newer computer, the better.

Hmm, that's a tough one. If your camera isn't compatible with your Mac I'd start out with the Dell. The i5 processor is tempting but not actually necessary IME, especially if you're just starting out and only working one site at a time.

You don't have to be perfect, especially starting out. Trust me, if you try to stream with the Dell and it doesn't work out like you'd hoped, worst case scenario is you try again with the Mac and will maybe need another cam. The guys aren't going to remember and shun you because your feed was choppy the day before or anything like that, haha. I wouldn't sink any significant amount of money into camming until you've completed at least a couple shifts. Not only will you know if it's for you but you'll have a better idea of what you need. Good luck!

It's not that my cam isn't compatible with my mac, I haven't yet purchased one. The logitech C920 which seems to be the most suggested and least expensive of the options is less compatible with the Mac. So I'm thinking at this point to go for the less expensive cam and try to use the Dell laptop, and if it doesn't work, return it and go with my Mac and a pricier cam. Does anyone have any personal experience with the Logitech C930e or the Logitech BCC950? Once again any input is appreciated!! I've been reading from various sites and forums and I'm still not really finding what I need.

Check Logitechs site, they tell you which cams work well with a Mac. I ran an wireless Logitech C930e with my mac. I just set the cam higher or lower, which ever is needed. Still have it, it worked very good with the old mac I have. Clarity was good!
Again check Logitechs site, they will let you know about their cams and macbooks.

Ops sorry don't own a Dell
