    Default "No Shampoo" method?

Has anyone done this? It involves forsaking shampoo and simply using baking soda on your scalp and apple cider vinegar on your ends every 2-3 days. Apparently there's a 1-3 week adjustment period for your skin cells to halt overproducing oils, and during that time you can get pretty greasy, but afterwards your hair is outrageously shiny and supple.

I want to try it for healthier hair, but also because I regularly dye my hair from strawberry blonde to auburn red with semi-permanent dyes, and it washes out in 3 to 4 weeks.

The only worry I have is that my club is a smoking club and sometimes it takes two rounds of floral shampoo after working just to get that smell out. I'm not sure baking soda would do the trick...

A friend of mine has been doing this for a year, because she's on thyroid medication which makes hair appear weak and thin. A stylist told her to try baking soda in place of shampoo and apple cider vinegar in place of conditioner twice weekly to help strip some of that medication out of the hair and act as a natural purifying shampoo (traditional purifying shampoos can be really harsh on your strands). Since doing this a few times a week and using shampoo/conditioner once a week, her hair actually has volume now and it's really shiny! I don't know about hair color though; she pretty much doesn't touch hair products, treatments, or heat/styling tools of any sort now.

I think I've poted in a few threads about this topic. Use a search for more info. I read the book by Lorraine Massey. I use products without sulphates, silicone, waxes. I ocassionally coconut oil mask.

I prefer not to use bakingsoda and vinegars because its a bit messy so I just cut out products which use chemicals which the NO-Poo method eshews.

Woops you're right, I didn't do a thorough search. Found a few, thanks!

Baking soda will dry out your scalp and hair, and it will also strip your color faster. I wouldn't recommend using baking soda for any beauty-related needs. But, like Desuvs said, I imagine ACV would be enough to get the smoke smell out. I soaked my clothes in vinegar after work when I was at a smoking club. With just soap, multiple washes wouldn't get the stench out, but a quick vinegar soak did the trick.

Ive also heard of people using conditioner only (the cheapest ones with the highest water content seem to work best) where you scrub the scalp with conditioner vigorously for a few minutes, and that's all you really need to do. I tried it when I was blonde and it made my hair super soft, but I stopped doing it because I had to use a purple shampoo to tone. Going to try it again now that I'm back to being a redhead.

I've been doing it for about 6mo now and I absolutely love it! I mix a few Tbs of baking soda in a 16oz cup with water in the shower, pour over my scalp and rub in with my fingernails. Then I rinse the fuck out of it, and pour a few Tbs of ACV (I use unfiltered, but I'm not sure it matters) and I put in a several drops of lavender oil cause my husband hates the vinegar smell (although he kinda hates lavender smell too lol, so I'm exploring other options like peppermint), and I fill up the cup with water and soak my ends in for a few moments, and then pour over my head and let sit while I soap up my body. Then I rinse, dry with a t-shirt (I have frizzy, semi curly hair) and put in a few drops of jojoba oil. When dry, I usually put a little serum on top to smooth out any frizz.

I don't complain about my hair anymore! Some girls get away with doing it once a week but I find every 3-4 days works best for my curly hair. And there IS an itchy period in which your hair needs to get used to it...For me, this was about 2 weeks. It's worth it, IMO!

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!

I've used ACV and it always gives my hair a residual smell...
But now I always mix my shampoo (Aubrey, with a clean ingredient lists) with a liberal amount of baking soda and smear the paste through my hair, and oh gods how it works wonders on hair quality. Uber shiny and soft and it clarifies without drying.

I am bi-racial (black & white) and love using the no poo method. I started with the baking soda for shampoo and the apple cider vinegar for conditioner while I had colored/dyed hair. It worked alright, but my hair felt kind of gross and it DID dry out my scalp. So now (my hair is natural and no dyes at the moment) I use green tea in my hair for shampoo and it totally takes away dandruff and does't have any weird smells. I use straight olive oil from the kitchen to condition it after I get out of the shower. It really makes my curls soft and healthy and works kind of like a gel.

I have very long hair and it can be a hassle to do all the time so I use Big Sexy Hair dry shampoo. You can buy it at Ulta. It's amazing for dark hair because it leaves no white residue at your roots.

+1, I use baking soda when I dye my hair and don't like how it turned out. its so harsh. it dries my hair out more than bleach does!.

I use an oil based shampoo (no sulfates) which helps keep it semi clean without drying it out and only use a mild clarifying shampoo once a week.
