Default First Time Wizard [DEVICEVM] Warning!

Last night after working on Streamate I wake up and I turn on my computer and instead of my computer starting like normal with the Windows7 welcome screen (or whatever), this box appears on the center of my screen and it says, 'First Time Wizard' and it asks me to select my language and my keyboard and to click [Next] and there appear to be no other options.

At first I thought my computer somehow screwed up or the hard disk got wiped and it thought it was being used for the first time, asking me to set it up (etc.). And I thought OMFG I am going to have to spend the entire day setting up my computer when I need to be working O_o ...

Anyway... Groggy with sleep and about to just click [Next] and initiate the process I changed my mind and decided to read the fine print to determine if this was really my computer wanting me to set it up as a new user. I saw DEVICEVM software agreement and I thought to myself, "That doesn't sound like Sony." So I started Googling and I found out that the product that was trying to force itself onto my computer was called Splashtop and I found this...

    Anyway...

I finally realized that if I did not agree to the terms of DEVICEVM that I could exit the program that initiated itself the moment I booted up my computer so I selected that I did not agree to the terms and I was finally able to exit the self-installing software. It looks as though someone created a virus essentially, one that unpacked itself and took over my computer as soon as it booted up in hopes that I would just click next and then whoever got this software on my computer would then have complete remote access to my computer and all of my files and information.

So if you turn on your computer and you see a box that says 'First Time Wizard' I suggest that you read the fine print. I have no idea whatsoever how this program installed itself on my computer or how it was able to initiate itself by simply having my computer turn on. I am the only person who uses this computer. Right now I am scanning my computer and searching for the files so I can delete them and will update this thread if I find anything.

It's not the same thing as the splashtop remote access program.

That particular program is not a virus. It's an alternate software that is provided by Sony - sort of a simplified OS that lets you just surf. It comes with all new Sony Vaios I believe. "Splashtop OS - VAIO Quick Web Access software"

Some computers have an alternate On button that triggers it. The one I saw was on the left whereas the usual power button was on the right. It allows it to boot up fast if you want to just surf and not start the entire OS.

I'd probably uninstall it though. Seems kind of a useless extra piece of bloatware taking up hard drive space.

Well that was weird. Thank you for clearing this up Laurielegs ^_^ . So in my sleepy stupor I must have pushed the web button instead of the on button. I have had this computer for at least three years and I never even noticed the button before O_o
