    Default Dog Raw Food Diet

Ugh! I am really trying to do this with my dogs but their bathroom habbits have complete changed and that means they are having accidents in the house. The dogs love the food. I take them out on walks 4 times a day and they are still having accidents. I used to free feed them and I had their bathroom habbits totally figured out. Now I am totally lost. I know this sounds like the stupidest question in the world but when do I take them out?

Have you asked your vet about them?

how long have you been feeding them raw since it'll likely take a couple weeks for their digestive issues to go back to "normal."

I would say feed them, wait twenty minutes, then go out, then wait another hour and go out again if you can. Also, you shouldn't be free-feeding them. Dogs don't self-regulate their food, which can become a problem especially if they get bored. But also free feeding raw just sounds messy (leaving out veggies or fruits since I don't think you'd leave out meat, eggs, or whatever.)

Worst case scenario-- whenever you cannot have them RIGHT by your side, keep them locked up in their kennel or in a small enough space that they won't feel comfortable peeing or pooping. Otherwise, even when you do figure out their peeing/pooping schedule, they'll have already gotten into the habit that sometimes it's okay to go inside.

Thank you for the answers. I should have been more clear when I wrote this out.

I am making them their food with raw meat/veggies. I weigh it out and feed them twice a day. I feed them 3% of their body weight per day because that is what the book I got said to do.

I only free fed them when I was giving them dry food. Even if I wanted to free feed them I couldn't...they love the food so much they basically inhale it. lol. i have to separate all 3 of them when they eat now or I am sure they would fight over the food.

Thank you again for the answers. I will follow the advice you all gave and see what happens in a couple of weeks. It is amazing how much less they poop now. Crazy!

What's the recipe, if you don't mind me asking? I'm in the process of doing the same thing.

He would go crazy trying to get to it while I was opening it for him meowing his head off....it was SO expensive though so I couldn't do it all the time. One day on a whim I poured some blood from my raw chicken livers onto a plate for him and he lapped it up. Gave him the actual liver and he devoured it. Gave him an egg yolk and same. He used to eat hearts but now he doesn't really go for them. I've given him muscle meat and it does nothing for him. Tried turkey necks and he only ate one one time. All he wants is liver(only poultry liver, he doesn't like beef liver) and the occasional egg yolk. I even bought him that premade raw food he used to love a little bit ago and he wouldn't touch it. He is so picky! I want to include more in his diet since a cat in the wild would never live off of just liver but he doesn't eat anything else!!
I heard that you have to add bone meal or whole egg shells to it though, because cats have to have something from it or they die. Do you add that?

I mean 'no calcium' ain't good but you won't just drop dead.

The reason I gave him turkey necks was for this reason, in the wild a cat would eat small bones. They sharpen their teeth and give them calcium. I watched him devour a bird he caught once and he ate its legs like they french fries so I know he needs them but I don't know how to get him to eat them. I have heard of cats eating chicken feet but my cat doesn't like them either. Chicken livers have calcium but I still think he would benefit from some bones.
Idk I read a bunch of veterinarian commentary on that and it says they just deficient over time of certain nutrients in bone meal or crushed up egg shells, and they just randomly die one day. I guess its because cats don't normally appear sick until its too late. Thats what I read.

If you gave him turkey necks, he should be fine. Apparently they need some vitamin in bone marrow, for some reason.

Do you mix the egg yolks with the chicken livers? I'm looking to make some kind of patty that I can freeze and give to him daily.

Hmmm yeah I would crush up eggs and add bone meal. I need to get bone meal.

I used to have my ex bf's cat on a raw food diet and I can shed some light on this for you.

The mineral cats need is called taurine, and yes they get it from bones or eggshells.

When I was doing the raw diet, I found an awesome pre-made supplement powder. It was primarily a mixture of bone meal, kelp, and powdered egg, with minerals and stuff added. I would mix it with ground beef, pureed beef liver, salmon oil, and water. I ordered a jar of salmon oil capsules and would cut a couple open for each batch I mixed up. The supplement powder had instructions on the side that explained the proper portions of each ingredient. I think it was about $45 for a bag of powder, which lasted about 4 months for one cat, and the liver and salmon capsules were very cheap and lasted forever. Cow livers are huge so I would cut one into individually wrapped portions and freeze. It really agreed with the cat too! He was rescued as a kitten but always underweight with hair loss and dermatitis. But on the raw diet he filled out to a healthy weight a grew a glossy coat. His box habits got much better too-way smaller and drier poops and he peed a lot less. (This was something the company advised would happen-it has to do with cats' roots in arid savannah climates. They are actually designed to process moisture from their food efficiently and don't need to drink much water. The gluten and cornmeal and low grade meat byproducts in processed cat food dehydrate them so they need much more water.)

OP, good luck with your dogs!

Damn, I can't even get my cat to eat anything except her Purina indoor cat formula and those greenies treats. I mean wtf, what cat won't eat tuna fish or whipped cream or milk or anything like that? Never had an animal, cat or dog, that didn't like table scraps, cheese, butter, etc. but this cat has no interest. I test all sorts of things on her since she likes to watch me eat like she might want some, but so far, the only other thing she likes is to lick sour patch kids. Doesn't make any sense!

My cat only cares about pastries and sea food. My old cat only cared about vegetables, lean & red meats.

I read online that liver has a high fat content and shouldn't be fed to dogs full time.
