Default Hair/house help! New place's water is ruining my blonde.

I just recently moved into a new duplex. I noticed right away that the water felt like that of a hotel at the beach... slimy. My hair never feels like the conditioner is coming out and the soap doesn't feel like it's coming off of my body. Additionally my hair feels extra brittle and tangly, and when I put in my normally hair products that are meant to make my hair soft and smooth... my hair dries looking and feeling like I put gel in it. My stylist even noticed that my hair was very brittle. I have gone back to my natural blonde recently for the summer and I was feeling really brassy so I went and paid good money for more highlights and a toner to get rid of the gold tones. I went home with a lovely pale beige blonde. One wash later and I have brass again in my hair!! It looks horrible. Money down the drain, literally. Now, I'm worried because I color my hair a lot and I do not know what the deal is with my water.

From my understanding, it is soft water and the reason it feels so gross is because it doesn't have the minerals and chemicals that would typically react to soap/shampoo/etc. in the way that hard water does. So I don't understand.. if it is soft and without these minerals.. why is it adding brass to my hair and also making my hair feel so awful?? It seems to be doing what people say hard water does and yet it still feels disgusting like softened water. I don't know what to do. I've always had really healthy soft hair and apparently never had a water softener. Can anybody help me make sense of this or do you know what my options are? I've never had to deal with something like this before and my online searches have not explained this.

So, I was REALLY bad in chemistry, but I believe the difference b/w hard and soft water has to do with the ion balance. Hard water has anions (Calcium and Magnesium...?). Soft water has cations (Sodium, aka salt). Soft water is better for your plumbing, not your hair. And yeah, it totally affects soap and stuff. It makes soap really lather up and tougher to rinse out. That's why all the washing machines tell you to use 25% of the normal amount of soap when they are hooked up to a soft water source.

My hair also hates soft water. I can't use the same products in soft and hard water. My hair is really long so it gets dry, but I still have to use a clarifying shampoo with it or my head will be gross. On Sephora they sell a special shower head that will filter your water. My friend has one and my hair feels amazing afterwards. I want one. I just moved too and my new place has soft water, so I'm still working on a solution. But, def switch up your products. Don't use regular soap on ur body. It will never come off. Get a soap free body cleanser for sure. I know there are companies that specifically make products for soft water.... If you find something that works good, please let me know!!!

Yeah I was going to suggest a filter as well, my area's water is very hard!

I lived at this one place that had the WORST water. My hair was so fucked. I ended up just washing my hair once a week with jugs of water I bought at the store. But yes, buy a filter. That sucks-- I'm sorry

get a filter and then get shampoos/treatments that are specifically for hard water.

GET A BERKEY SHOWER FILTER! The one at sephora is ok but very expensive and kinda overpriced because its a T3 brand.

I have a Berkey water filter for my drinking water and another for my shower water, best filters ever.

I have the Royal size for my kitchen,I wont EVER buy a shitty brita again. My hair is naturally coarse and thick, the water in my city is poison period so without the filter my hair gets CRUNCHY...

Nato or something like that uses Berkey filters and the filters last forever it seams,I just did a red dye test for my kitchen one...came out crystal clear so they are good for a bit.

If she feels like pond scum after a shower, then I think she has soft, not hard water, right? Soft water makes soap lather too much. Hard strips your skin (and pipes), I think. I gotta figure this out too! My hair is a mess!!!
