Question I need a reeeaaalllyyy good retinol serum.

At almost-39, I seemed to have reached a plateau in my ceaseless search for the perfect skincare routine.
I have a few products that I love and will continue to use until I don't love them anymore:
    "Cleanser"- grapeseed oil
Toner- Thayer's Alcohol-Free Fragrance-Free Witch hazel with Aloe
    "Serum"- rosehip seed oil
Moisturizer/sunscreen- some Olay "DNA superstructure" bullshit with SPF 50 (I actually quite like it, despite the obvious bullshit factor)
    Moisturizer (night)- Lacura CoQ-10 Anti-Wrinkle
Peel (2x weekly)- Peter Thomas Roth Unwrinkle Pads

All pretty great, but I suddenly need reinforcement, as 2 very unsettling events occurred recently:
    1) Failed to get carded upon attempting to purchase beer at Wal-mart (first time EVER)
    2) Some dude said I look THIRTY-FIVE at the club the other day (not that I care what he thinks, but was already beginning to think so myself).

Botox and fillers are, sadly, unavailable to me at the moment as I cannot find a Groupon or LivingSocial deal for either in my area.

I have a derma-roller coming from Amazon any day now, but I do not currently have a retinol in my life. I have had some pretty blah results from the usual Neutrogena suspects.
I'd rather keep it under $30.

Rain your beautiful wisdom down upon me, Gorgeouses!

Green Cream is my jam. I use level 6, which is what my dermatologist recommended for me. At $42 it's a little high, but in your ballpark: http://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Skin-...bxgy_bt_text_y

I always check out New Beauty mag, they usually have excellent recommendations for anti-aging stuff. They are online also, but the magazine's very indepth, skin, hair, body treatments, doctors, etc.
I also went in a store connected to a skin doctor's office, they gave me recs w/o a prescription.

^I looked at this thread because I wanted to see what the girls recommended . But, after reading your post I really wanted to comment...I know you aren't looking at getting it done, but I would REALLY recommend botox and fillers. They seem expensive because it's a lump sum payment. But, don't let that scare you! IME, botox etc may seem expensive-but long term it's an investment and a preventative that will last 3-6 months. So, for the cost-you get your money's worth! Long term, you'll spend more trying creams and other products (or at least I did before I started getting it) that won't give you the results you desire.

Your GP would be able to give you a script for something strong, or you could pick up some creams online. Lancome visionnaire isn't retinol, but for an over the counter product it makes a difference, lasts a long time .

I hate botox. I tried it at 37( first time) and hated it. I tried it again a year and a half ago and have yet to find someone who does it were it actually makes me look younger, not older( only once) did I like the result. I don't really need it, even at 44 I have more horizontal forehead lines( not the glabella) number 11 ones. So it drops my forehead and makes me look older. I love fillers( they fill in my long skinny face) I do them once every 7-10 months. That's it. As for skincare( drugstore) stuff was good until about 30 then you need more. I switch a lot but revive mouturising renewal cream( it's 185) a jar but well worth it! I use it in the am and ddf retinol at night. I've used real retin a ( well a lighter version) avage with md forte 40% glycolic cream years ago but you have to go to a derm and have that prescribed. You can go on ebay and look for a seller that has at least 99% feedaback and get both those products for about half. I bought murads collagen repair today. 79 bucks, I'll let you know how I like that.

Also wanted to add...you can buy peels online that are the same as the estheticians use. Pltinumn skicare is one site. Those will help. You could consider a fraxel laser skin tightening treatment you only need one and it's about 400 but will give you results that last years. I use to do ipls in my 30's and attribute that and great genentics for looking 15-20 years younger than I am. Also wear a good sunscreen. that above all else is the best thing you can do for your skin.

You might want to try Retin A. It has to be prescribed by a dermatologist, but its well worth it.
It is a gel you put on your face overnight that exfoliates your skin, and it makes your skin smooth and glowing. Its also known for its anti aging benefits.
Ive been using it since I was 16 (now 2 my skin is flawless and I get mistaken for being 5-7 years younger than I am all the time.

I also get preventative botox on my forehead and around my eyes. If there's ANY way you could get botox, do it! Its expensive, but the way I look at it is that my body/face, is my business and my money. It truly is an investment that will be worth it!

Very interesting! Being no stranger to retinols/ glycolics etc... wonder which level I would start with? Looks cool though... and $42 isn't completely outrageous.

I actually am DYING to have Botox, Radiesse & maybe even a little Juvederm in the lips... it really is just a money thing at the moment, as I am paying monthly for the boob I just had fixed. I have to either get that paid down quite a bit first, or find a really good deal, and that is proving very hard to do in my little bitty city. Looking at retinol less for its modest effects on wrinkles, and more for tone & texture.

I actually love Botox- used to get it for free all the time when I worked at a medspa. I don't have 11's, more of just a "1", but it's enough to need bangs, or I look angry. I've read pretty good reviews on Stri-Vectin's new retinol, but not that nuch better than for Neutrogena's Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream, which is absolutely useless for me.

I definitely want the fraxel thing, but again with the money thing... although I may be able to swing $400 on the Care Credit without hubs noticing. I wear spf 50 (at least) every day, and have since my late teens, so I'm good there. It's only recently that I feel like I might look 30, and I am NOT okay with it.

I also used Retin-a when I worked for the medspa, and while the results were definitely gorgeous in the end, I simply cannot go through the peeling process to get there... it took the better part of a year last time before I wasn't peeling 75% of the time and well, I can't show up at the SC with huge flakes falling off my face.
I'm supposed to hear about reimbursement for my implant soon... that will be $1k I'm not paying on & will give me a little wiggle room.

Sometimes if I start peeling from the Retin A, I will use it every other night or even take a few days off from it. Just a suggestion :-)

I have extremely dry slin and when I used the avage with the md. forte I didn't peel. Now when I used obagi and retin a I couldn't keep my foundation on during a shift because my already dry skin was way drier and peely. I looked ridiculous about 3 hours into a shift. But rallky like the avage with m.d. forte. I'm going to my doctor today because , again the botox isn't right and he needs to fix it!

Michelle, do you use a firming cream for face, or do those you mentioned firm?

how much/how often did you use the retin A? because retin A will give you the youthful skin, from what i hear from multiple dermatologists over-the-counter products do not give you enough oomph to really make a difference deep down, not at all! they also said that you should be using retin A 3 times a week, maybe one time a week if you are just starting out so that it doesn't peel so much, and maybe a cream instead of gel? using perscription grade aloe vera with your retin A will also ease symptoms of redness, peeling, irritation and clear up any acne twice as fast ( if you have any that is lol). sorry, maybe you already know all this lol, but im a huge fan of retin A!
peels will also get down to the dermis and ease signs of aging, in fact i was told the best way to remain wrinkle-free ( or close to it, hell, we all age at some point) was to get peels as often as possible or use Retin A because that's the only way to start regeneration down at the dermis, the other will just smooth or plump things over on the epidermis but won't prevent deep wrinkling.

I liked how peter thomas roth retinol in the blue bottle made my face look--

it did seem to give a "dewier" look to my skin within a week or so. I also noticed that the little tiny bumps that were on different parts of my facial skin went away so I had a more uniform skin appearance which I enjoyed. Ran out and have been telling myself if I make x amount of dollars I'll then buy myself a large bottle as a reward.

peels will also get down to the dermis and ease signs of aging, in fact i was told the best way to remain wrinkle-free ( or close to it, hell, we all age at some point) was to get peels as often as possible or use Retin A because that's the only way to start regeneration down at the dermis, the other will just smooth or plump things over on the epidermis but won't prevent deep wrinkling.
I used retin-a (tretinoin) .05 cream every third night, alomg with the whole obagi system with the blender & all that... my skin peeled so severely & constantly that there was hardly time to enjoy the pretty skin that was being revealed. The lady I worked for insisted that it had to peel like that to work, and forbid use of anything to soothe it. I could talk to my PS about it though, maybe give it another chance.

wow you are being wat too harsh on your skin. get a less strong retin a and do once a week and cut down on obagi. you're not supposed to visibly peel (unless of course part of your obagi routine is a chemical peel).

^ yes, there is no reason why you can't use something to soothe it! i know lots of girls who use a moisturizer after, or the aloe vera i mentioned..you also need to let your face dry for at least an hour before applying it, and that helps tremendously with peeling..i use .01 gel and my skin never peels unless i use too much or use it every single night..what you are using sounds way too harsh. that woman sounds like a moron!

This was 6 years ago & I haven't used retin-a since then. But, I emailed my PS yesterday about it & he called in retin-a A (tretinoin) in the .025 strength. I'll start with that 3x a week & the Unwrinkle (glycolic) pads once a week. The lower strength with the fact that I cleanse with oil now, plus coconut oil for rescue *if* I peel... should work this time.
I looked at some before/afters and reviews of fraxels and IPL's on realself.com and yeah... I'd be the one permanently scarred from it... so, think I'll stick with topicals, peels, microdermabrasion, & injections.

Ohhh, have you used your derma roller yet? I used to be a botox fanatic, but I swear I am seeing great results with my derma roller--so much so that *I* actually haven't had the urdge to get botox ( which is admittedly pretty miraculous)!

What length did you buy, if you don't mind me asking? I currently have a 1.5, which I use monthly. I'll have to order a new one after next month, and was thinking of getting a 1.0 because the 1.5 seems excessive (for the face).

Sorry, I'm rambling, lol. I saw the words "derma roller" and got really excited, haha.

I bought the 1.0, but with "free super saver shipping", I don't expect it to arrive for a few more days. I've never used one before.... not even entirely sure *how* to use the thing... but I've read so many great reviews that I've got to try it. I bought the 1.0 based on the reviews I read on makeupalley.

I found an Exviance brand sample (from Ulta) of a Daily Antioxidant Peel, w/10% citrica acid antioxidant formula, I'll let you know how it works.
