Default Need some info on dancing in Edinburgh?

Hello ladies, I am a dancer from Germany, and I've been supporting my university studies with what I earn for three years. As part of my uni course, I get the chance to study at the University of Edinburgh for one year. I really want to go, but I'd still need to support myself through dancing and I don't know what stripping is like over there. Has any of you danced there? I have a few specific questions:

    1. How high is the general hiring standard? Because I come from a relatively small city and even though I am fit I am not perfect or statuesque. But I don't know what the general standard is like in Scotland
    2. Are cabs expensive? Haha I know it's a bit of a weird question, but when I first started dancing I soon realized that the reason why money was never enough was because I gave so much of what I earned to the taxi driver who brought me back home (here taxi drivers are thiefs) and that's why I bought a car. But I won't have my car when I am in Edinburgh.
    3. What is a safe area to rent a bedsit? I don't want to live on campus because it causes complications when dancing, so I'd rather stay on my own and focus on working and on my studies. I'd love to hear your recommendations.

I know these last two questions are not strictly related to stripping, but I have been dancing for a fairly long time so I know how that works lol. But I've never danced outside of my home city so I need some info on dancing in Edinburgh in particular. Thanks for the help girls

Edinburgh is a wonderful city and you will have a fantastic time if you go - which I really encourage you to do! The constant bad weather isn't a myth, so bring an umbrella and some wellies.

    1. Hiring standards vary. There are a few clubs in the city, so you will no doubt find somewhere that will take you. Most of the clubs are small and try to avoid having too many girls, so if you get turned away, it's worthwhile to go back after a few weeks.
    2. I found cabs to be pretty reasonable. I never cabbed very far though.
    3. Check gumtree.com for accommodations. I lived by the Meadows off Clerk Street and really enjoyed it. Not far from the clubs/downtown or campus (walking distance, actually) and a pretty nice area. Some people say the Meadows aren't safe at night, but to be honest I always walked home from the club at night and never felt unsafe. I had a friend who lived in Leith and it seemed quite nice, though again some said it wasn't the best area.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask/PM me! I lived and danced in Edinburgh last year, so I think any info I can provide you with will still be relevant.

Thank you so much for your detailed answer! I'll definitely remember the wellies and I hope the strip clubs are warm hahahah.

You found it safe enough to walk home from the strip club? At my club the manager automatically calls cabs for all the dancers, because we have been pretty brainwashed to believe that leaving by car is the safest way to avoid stalkers. I never believed this theory too much though, and I'd be happy to walk back home because it would be a huge saving.

By browsing gumtree.com I got the impression that Edinburgh is quite an affordable city, with private flat studios with bathroom and all costing about 400 £ pcm. Definitely encouraging news

To be honest, I've walked home from most of the clubs I've danced at. I've always worked in clubs and areas where I felt safe and walked around at night anyway, so it wasn't much of a difference to walk home from work. Of course, you have to be vigilant and it helps to not parade around like a stripper!

Edinburgh is certainly one of the more affordable big cities in the UK, so your expenses ought to be quite low which eases some of the stress out of dancing and being in school at the same time. I found it pretty easy to make rent and then some in one weekend shift, so if you're a good hustler you can probably get away with only working weekends, some weekends or even some weekends, giving you more time to focus on school.
