I call bullshit. She just makes me want to work harder. My excuse for being overweight? I made bad choices while recovering from my BA. I ate like shit and sat on my ass. I thought I could "work it off" at the gym no matter what I ate. Well guess what? Eat like shit, look like shit. (at least for me)

It took hitting rock bottom and not being hired at several clubs for being overweight. Now I look awesome. It's hard, yeah. Getting off work and then hitting the gym. Being tired and cranky. But it has paid off. I've only been turned down one time since I lost weight and it wasn't for my body. My tattoos were an issue but I knew that from the beginning.

Bottom line: Your body is your responsibility.

Being thin is mostly about what you eat. Or don't eat, usually. Most people eat too many calories.

I've lost 70 lbs (and am continuing) this woman is NOT fat shaming lol. If anything she's inspiring women to get in shape. So many women use their families and kids as taking up all their time so they can't work out and well.. That's not true.

I agree. While there are some women who are out of shape for reasons not their own (like health issues)the majority are that way because of their fault. While I have never been obese at times I have been overweight and it was my fault because I ate horrible and didn't workout.

Wow, no that is the farthest thing from fat-shaming I can think of. All those responding negatively are just looking for another excuse not to have an excuse. :o

I partially disagree with her on this. Just because there are people (like me) who manage to lose all their pregnancy weight and will not look as good no matter how hard they try. I consider myself a very healthy eater and I'm at a healthy BMI, I work out, but unfortunately genetics weren't on my side, so I will probably never have a flat stomach, or even a stomach that resembles a normal one. My skin just won't snap back. 3 doctors told me my best hope is surgery. So its a little upsetting to see things like this that imply I'm not trying hard enough.

I will call bullshit on BMI...to an extent...I'm at 115 now but I've been lifting weights. According to a BMI index I'm slightly overweight. (Uh huh)

Now if you're 5'1 and almost 400 llbs, Houston we have a problem. I don't expect everyone to be a size 3. But for the average person an hour a day of exercise will not kill you. There is a line where genetics ends and personal accountability begins.

I think what I got from it when I first saw this picture was, "She has three children and looks this good, therefore you CAN look this good too, you just aren't trying." Nope. I can't. I'm 5' 1", 123 lbs, a size 5 BUT I've got stretch marks and my stomach resembles that of a 70 year old and those things aren't going to change by any means of physical activity or healthy eating habits. But being a mother myself, I do think it's necessary to set good examples for our children and lead them towards healthy eating habits and life choices early on. So even though I can't change any of those things, that doesn't mean I'm going to abandon my healthy habits.

I have seen this, a page I subscribe to on facebook was having a pop at her for it (Beauty redefined, the page is called).
I have had similar rows with the women who run the page, because they bashed another member of their group for wanting surgery to make her more confident and I accused them as being just as judgemental as the societial happenings they were against!

Anyway, I don't think she's fat shaming. I think she's being very inspiring-and to her It's about promoting health rather than what one looks like, It's about making the best of yourself and looking after your body the best you can despite restrictions-she's obviously overcome battles herself.
I'll never be of supermodel proportions, or have a slight build-I'm built like a brick shithouse! But I can make sure I look the best I can for my natural build and shape, and I can make sure that I don't fill my body with crap-I want it to serve me well as I get older!

Yeah, so I think I have a decent body and I do exercise and eat well for it. That said I got average grades in college no matter how hard i tried and having the professor (however well-meaning) making a public scene about how so and so an got a 4.0, you have no excuses! would not have been helpful. I don't think she's fat shaming but I find it a little distasteful and not particuarly inspirational either.

There is a woman at my gym who is not and never will be a size 3. She can kick my ass on lifting and cardio.
Yep. When I workout heavily my BMI was considered overweight and it used to make me cry because my dress size was nowhere near plus size. I asked my trainer and she said the BMI is misleading because those who are athletic will generally have a larger one though they might be in better shape than a thinner person.

I too know not everyone will be a size 3 but am so tired of this excuse some people make where they say they will always be obese. Some will be obese but most are just lazy.

i absolutely agree with her when she says that some people use their pregnancy as an excuse to not exercise and to pig out..when i was pregnant i still walked every single day, and ate healthy as shit because gaining 100 pounds of mcondalds weight is not healthy for you or your baby!!! i know two women who did that.. a lot of women feel that after they have kids, that's it, there's my excuse to give up and quit trying..im a "mom" now. i'm pregnant, i can look disgusting if i want, yaayyy!! yeah, i have a fast metabolism, but i can't tell you how many ppl have said " wow i can't believe you had a kid" or " you look so good for somebody who had a kid"..* for somebody who had a kid" gee thanks, so just because i had a kid i have to be this tub of lard? NO. NO. NO. yeah, you might get stretch marks like me, or have some extra skin, but there's a big difference between shit like that where you can't control it, and exercising and eating right and being at a healthy weight and in good shape.
i just don't see why people can't just stop with the excuses already! this woman looks fan-fucking-tastic , she blows me away.
if somebody accomplishes something great in life, it just seems like the haters come out to put them down and try and explain why its just impossible for them to do that too. stfu already.
she inspired me anyways, i need to get off my ass and get to the gym already

There is a larger woman at my gym who can kick my ass in almost everything. She doesn't make any excuses about her size. She just busts her ass every damn day, sometimes longer than me.

Ok, while I am a petite girl, and I personally prefer myself as such. I don't think its fair to say someone is disgusting because they let themselves get overweight or they chose not to do something about their weight. There are a lot of plus sized girls on this site and a lot of them make their money from being bigger. To some people, it's attractive. I just think it's a bit mean.

Regardless of how much someone weighs or your clothing size this country is killing itself slowly. We eat like shit. We don't get enough exercise.

    Update from the horse's mouth:

I'm alive! After the onslaught of last week's media blitz and feeling like a punching bag from commenters, emailers and news/talk show hosts (won't say who) I feel like I can still smile knowing that the many who got my message, truly received it. I do have to admit though. I have looked at this man to my right and asked "what is going on?" a few times. (thanks hunny for your support) Here's what I believe is going on:

#1 There's an accountability issue. There's a lot of people with a lot of excuses - not only did McDonald's make people fat, apparently I did also!

#2 There's an entitlement issue - people believing that I can achieve something without doing anything (genetics). People don't want to hear that it takes discipline, consistency and hard work to achieve a goal anymore.

#3 There's a body shaming issue (my body). Apparently we have forgotten how different kinds of health looks like (since being overweight has become normalized).

#4 There's a bullying issue. I think this word is so overused that we forgot that a bully attacks others? I posted my picture on MY fitness-oriented page. (I still feel the cyber punches from those who continuously attack me- ouch!)

#5 There's a motherhood issue. We wear many hats as caretakers and often providers for our family. The stress to balance everything is great right now - but my point as a busy working mom of three is to make yourself a priority. You are a better mom when you take a little bit of time to be healthy. However your body physically manifests in the process of exercising and eating healthy is beautiful. (and it doesn't have to look like mine)

Everybody's body is different, especially when it comes to after pregnancy. Yes, you can definitely do your part but bodies are different in how they are. I'm bigger or "thicker" and it takes a lot of work for me to be in shape, but I am very proportionate and hourglass and my stomach was flat about 5 days after my pregnancy where I gained 80 pounds and still need to lose 30 (baby is 7 weeks old and yes! That was way too much weight gain and completely my fault).
I'm bigger but still hourglass and proportionate, no stretch marks and loose skin.

Whereas my friend is super tiny and will always have a pooch and saggy skin from pregnancy. And she only gained 30 pounds. Everyone is different but everybody can look their own personal best if they want to.

She is amazing because she works and stays in shape and takes care of her kids. I am somewhat more sympathetic to working moms who are overweight but to me there really is no reason why a stay at home mom can't shed at least some of the weight because she could put aside working out during the day when the kids are napping or busy. I have friends who are stay at home moms and they are obese because they sit on the computer all day.

I'm in the middle of losing the baby weight and I don't have help with my little one. I can tell you finding time to work out is easier said than done, but I do find the time. It's a matter of wanting it hard enough, plus everybody knows its 80% diet, 20% working out (or a variation of that) so no time to work out shouldn't be an excuse to be obese.

Nobody here wears grown up clothes? Odd sizes are junior sizing. Eeek!

Mom's letting themselves go and saying "I have kids" is a really bad excuse. I weighed 175 after I gave birth. I was a pig. I worked my ass off and lost all of it.

I wear a 2/4 in petites but I think they're vanity sizing because 2's hang off me.

Congrats for losing weight ... but also for being more healthy. My goal has always been to eat more healthily. Meaning I would cut our the bad stuff. Month one, no ice cream, month two, no snacks etc. Eventually I was eating mostly no junk at all, mostly vegetables and grains with a little, little meat. The weight just fell off. Start slowly.
