    Angry SM - Black screen issues!

    This has happened to me before, but it seems to be happening all the time now in the past few weeks. It interferes with my working schedule and not to mention, it bothers the heck out of me! After about two minutes into a gold show, my encoder video preview flickers. On the customers end, its just a black screen... video totally cut out.

    My internet speed is - 30 download and 5 upload. My computer is pretty much the best there is right now, and its totally hard wired. I've tried streaming both with wire and wireless but nothing has changed.

    Any idea why this is happening? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    When it happens, look on the left side of your encoder screen, where it shows your encoder log. Is your bit rate adjusting? That's usually why you'll see a black flicker. SM has us allow the encoder to adjust the bit rate in order to preserve the connection, if possible, instead of just disconnecting us as soon as the bit rate isn't up to par.

    This would work in your favor if, say, your speed dropped with 20 seconds left in your 10 minute gold show. Instead of disconnecting you & you not getting paid for the 9:40 you already performed, it allows you to stay connected for those last 20 seconds. Of course, if your guys are saying, one minute into a gold show, that they can't see you, you'd disconnect & start over. But no sane person IMO would cancel a show on purpose with 20 seconds left. That's the benefit. The draw-back is, of course, that no one bothered to explain this to the models, so people are just wondering why the hell they're blacking out.

    If you ask SM support, they'll tell you that it's your internet. It's possible that it is your internet. Upload speeds are ALWAYS variable, regardless of results that you might get when doing a speed test. There are fluctuations in speed, and in order not to put you into a lag, the encoder attempts to compensate by matching the connection's capability to transmit data.

    It's also possible that it's something on their end interfering with your signal reaching their servers. This was happening to me for a few weeks, and then it suddenly resolved itself. Whether the cable company fixed a line or something got rebooted on SM's end, I have no idea.

    The only thing I can recommend is restarting your modem. If that doesn't help, try restarting your computer. If those things don't help, it may just be a waiting game. You could also call your cable company and ask them if there have been any reports of "noise in the node" that you're using. Whenever I have internet issues, that's what they always end up telling me. There's something in my area on my node that creates noise on the line and temporarily slows my speeds.
