Default Was there rules/guidelines for trick or treating in your area tonight?

This year in my area there were rules in place. Door knocking for candy was between 6-8 pm no one 13 and older was allowed to get candy and u were allowed to call the cops and report over age trick or treaters. This was reported by a DJ on a local radio station in my area. Apparently every police force in every city in my county was on board with this and would respond to reported over aged trick or treaters. I asked one friend in my vanilla life about this and he says this is unconstitutional - is this true? Personally i think its bullshit and two hours for trick or treating when in my area when its not even dark until 8 basically trick or treating must be done in the daylight right before sundown kinda ruins the fun of it all IMO. How do you feel about such guidelines?

Here I had trick-or-treaters starting at about 5:45 when the sun went down until the last ones at 8:15. Most were little bitty kids (IMO, a 1-2 year old really has no place trick or treating, the mom is just gonna eat the candy... c'mon), the oldest were maybe 12.

We have no rules.... but I wish parents would teach their children some manners. I stood outside until about 7:15, and was having a good time of it, but when I went inside it got annoying. People now had to knock - and these kids around here do NOT knock or ring the bell once, they pound on it and ring the doorbell like "dingdongdingdongdingdongdingdong" until you open the door. I HATE it.. Boyfriend and I both jumped every time, it sounds like SWAT is here to kick your door in! I had run out of candy and turned the lights off, and these kids were still doing that, plus running around to the carport door and hammering on that door.

The DJ we listen to was saying he wanted some rules, like no trick or treating before the sun sets, and nobody over 16. I'd be down with that. I think 2 hours is PLENTY of time too. I would say they should adjust it so it's at least sunset before they start though.

Edit: On the cop thing....... yeah right (at least here). I live right behind a big entertainment district, the cops here are more concerned with DUIs than "overage trick or treaters". I think that's excessive. If they are obviously too old, don't give them candy.

Personally, I think all the guidelines take the fun out of it. People keep their porch lights off cause they don't want to buy candy and it's like everyone does it now. There's barely any place to get candy now cause everyone is so cheap. I fear trick or treating won't be happening much longer.

No guidelines per se, but I took my girls out and I certainly enforced all of the normal rules of the road with them: (1) no approaching when the lights are off; (2) One ring only and leave if the door is not answered; (3) say "trick or treat" clearly every time; (4) take one piece of candy only unless told otherwise; and (5) say "thank you" and "Happy Halloween" each time. My two oldest are 7 and 4 and they were angels. They also came home with a ton of candy - lol.

A good 20% of houses chose to keep their lights off, which i thought was kind of crappy, but there it is.

I didn't see many big kids out there, so for the most part I don't think that age limits were a real problem. I think that many teens are too lazy nowadays to work that hard for the candy in any event - lol.

On the flip side, my wife stayed home to hand out candy and she reported pretty much the same things. We had a ton of kids come by this year, which was awesome.

6p-8p in my area. The sun sets ~ 630p where I'm at, curious where poster lives that the sun is still up at 8p. Seeing that the extension of daylight savings time to Nov. (vs long time customary mid Oct.) occured in last few years, I don't think it would be unreasonable to bump the times from 7pm-9pm. I'm with some posters that Halloween is a night timed theme- so it should be for trick-or-treating.
    I'm right 96% of the time. I don't sweat the other 5% .......................

That's crazy, OP! Are you supposed to ID kids who look over 13? My sis was like 5'5" when she was in the 7th grade. I didn't know that places were so strict about trick or treating in some places!

Halloween is supposed to be about egging cars, toilet papering houses and smashing pumpkins, where I'm from. We would not stand for such pansy-ass rules.

I think some rules are good. I think if ur 16 or older..NO TRICK OR TREATING.

Kids are just downright rude these days, escpecially the older ones. They come bangin on ur door not even dressed up and as soon as u open the door..they say NOTHING and just hold their already FULL pillowcases wide open for u to dump ur candy in....ur lucky if u get a thank u before they are hightailing it (tryin to beat the other kids) to the next house. Sorry but id much rather give my candy to a 1 or 2 yr old that is dressed so darn cute & is amazed at the fact that ur giving them candy!! Who cares if the mom eats most of it...the child most likely enjoyed it. So to me...THAT'S WHAT HALLOWEEN IS ABOUT.

Ours was from 5:30-7:30. We had 8 bags of candy left we gave away like 3 bags and that was 2-3 pieces a kid. It was rainy and super windy here. We're the scary house that kids remember and are afraid to come up to but this year because of the rain we had plastic over everything. When I was a kid I remember really cold days maybe even snow and everyone went out. I saw kids 3 and under in just their costume and no umbrella. I saw one girl who looked like she was 13 with a pregnant belly who went down on the side walk and lit up a cigarette. Then a little boy came up to the house saying were where already here because we lost track of the houses we've gone to already made me laugh at his honesty so he got candy again.

Last year we didn't have that many because of bad weather so I let the kids pick out their own candy and one mom kept going through it looking for what she wanted took like 5 pieces herself plus her daughters. The dad was so embarrassed kept saying come on it ain't for you. I kept trying to pull the bowl away greedy ass.

On facebook I just kept reading about parents should download this and that to find sex offenders and a lady a few hours away said her cops put a cone out saying they're a sex offender. If you're that worried about sex offenders shouldn't you be on Meghan's law knowing where they are?

I think our trick or treat time was 5-8. That's the times my door was being knocked on. I didn't even have my light on to hand out candy either.... Everytime I looked outside, I saw kids running through my garden. THAT is why I don't give out candy. I live on the bad side of town, but still try to make my yard nice. Just to have brats wreck it.... God I'm the cranky neighbor... There weren't a lot of other houses in my neighborhood handing out candy either. There were enough for my 3 year old to enjoy herself. I don't know if there are any other rules though. I think that as long as a kid or teenager is in costume and enjoying themselves, why can't they get a piece of candy. Imposing age restrictions is kind of dumb.

Ours was from 3-7 though we didn't get many until after 4pm. We did get a group of what looked like older kids (like teens)and they looked too old but I didn't want to ask (and yes if you are in high school you are too old). Mostly it was little kids and most said thank you. When I lived in my last place we mostly got teen thugs without costumes who wanted yet another freebie so I never answered unless it was little kids.

i knew someone who lived in a neighborhood some 20 yrs ago. i trick or treated there as a kid once. it was a low crime suburban area. there were no set hours so people went out until as late as 10-11pm! also, lots of teens. we saw them out and had no problems with the ones t&ting. they were actually nice to us younger kids. honestly, if the teens are in costume and well-mannered, i see no issue with it. they're too young for clubs, parents don't want them going to parties, drunk driving issues, etc., so why not let them get some candy? the issue with this area was it was known for: tping, egging, shaving cream on cars, pumpkin smashing and at the elementary school nearby, kids would gather on halloween night and fist fight or throw frozen eggs at each other. the troublemakers weren't the ones trick or treating. the town put a restriction by iding people to buy eggs, etc. a few days before halloween. it didn't stop the issue. so, my thoughts are, let them trick or treat if they want to and are well behaved- better than them getting in trouble. as far as hours, well, i think 6-9:30pm is reasonable.

I went trick or treating every year with my cousins and I was a teen. I got candy. I don't see the problem in that?

i wish i got trick r treaters! i've always either lived in a shitty apartment or out in the woods. trick r treating's a big thing everywhere i've lived, almost every house does it. my home town doesn't have a totally set time, they just have suggestions. here in my new town its 5-8.
that's absolutely ridiculous!!! i see no problem with teen trick'treaters. most of them would probably rather go out, get sloshed, and fuck but some like to trick or treat. big whoop, its halloween for god's sake, its a damn holiday and one the best one in my opinion. what a bunch of nazis. makes me sick
