    Default Knee problems

So, a bit of a strange, embarrassing issue: I have really bad knees. I mean like they crack like fireworks going up and down stairs, crouching/kneeling down.. so you can imagine how they sound when I'm kneeling down with an extra 6"-7" to go.

Anyone else have this? I anticipate starting dancing at the end of this week or next and I don't really know what to do about it. It'd be distracting to everyone else if anything. I am doing knee-strengthening exercises as well as toning and building my legs which should help with overall support, but is there any way I can go about masking the awful sound they make? Hopefully the noise will be loud enough to cover but jeez.. it's bad.

Perhaps I just needed to project my concern into the universe but any suggestions/sympathetic whinings are welcome.

Hmm not sure about the sounds, but I am dealing w/knee pain..I fell twice on it, & it bothers me during humid/cold weather. I do take regular pain relievers, Advil etc. but I also do self message, it seems to help a bit.

Yeah pain is a big factor on some days, like when the weather's acting up and it's just constant aching so bad sometimes I can't fall asleep.

The cracking is cos my cartilage has been worn down due to a snowboarding incident like 9 years ago that was never remedied properly, basically my hips were jarred and were slightly out of place so my one leg was doing more work than the other, resulting in the wearing down of cartilage so now the bones rub together. So gross and painful and I don't want it to be an issue if while dancing everybody else can hear them crack ...lol. Awk.

I've been dancing for two years and still have this problem :/. Floorwork is excruciating for me sometimes - so I don't dance at nude clubs. It sucks, sorry I don't know what else to say. Avoid floorwork if you can. When you get up, use the pole. That's what I do. Shimmy over to the pole and lift yourself gracefully with your arms.. it's hard to explain I guess.. ::smh::

    Best of luck

Ive had a lot of knee pain lately. I crack a joint in my body every time I move! I dont know if there is really any way to mask the sound though.
One thing you could try is stretching or doing some simple leg exercises before you go into work. I tried that last Thursday and Friday, and it seemed to help a little.

Take an ibuprofen before work helps too.

I have an appointment on the 19th about this exact issue. If I get any valuable info, Ill pass it on!

I think your best bet is to get good flexible spandex-y knee braces in black, and then get platform boots that are either up to your knee or thigh high. If the brace is above the boot it will just look like your boot goes higher or that you have high socks on.

you might also consider getting some gelatin (you can buy it by the pound pretty inexpensively) and adding that to your daily diet as it's supposed to help with joints' cartilege.

however I was googling and ran across this on wiki:

    "Cracking joints[edit]
    Main article: Cracking joints
When the two articulating surfaces of a synovial joint are separated from one other, the volume within the joint capsule increases and a negative pressure results. The volume of synovial fluid within the joint is insufficient to fill the expanding volume of the joint and gases dissolved in the synovial fluid (mostly carbon dioxide) are liberated and quickly fill the empty space, leading to the rapid formation of a bubble.[15] This process is known as cavitation. Cavitation in synovial joints results in a high frequency 'cracking' sound.[16][17]"
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synovial_fluid

According to wiki-- synovial fluid is made up partially by hyaluronic acid and I know I've seen that for sale and heard good things about it, but I've never tried it and I'm not sure how good it is at working it's way quickly to the areas it's most needed.

My knee still crackles a little bit from an old motorcycle accident. Plus the knee sucks in general from it, but the leg is strong.

I don't know if you like thigh high boots but I would get a pair and then wrap the hell out of the knees & no one will ever know. If you wrap them properly it's like a bionic knee. If you do get the boots make sure the heels are good & strong, some are way better than others (but of course you probably already know that, sorry)

OK wow nice going BanHammer! We posted basically the same thing one minute apart...

Except of course you have the scientific angle covered about the little noise. The doctor told me it was mild arthritis from the accident, one year later when I was 26. Running with a bad knee as exercise is a bad idea, but there are other things that can be done to strengthen the knees, or rather the muscles that support them.

From my own experience I have to 3rd the thi-hi boots suggestion. My knees started going to hell long before I was dancing, & dancing made it quite a bit worse. For the majority of my dancing time I wore tall boots w/ layers of over-the-knee socks, & even started folding up tip $$ to pad my knees w/ when I couldn't avoid floorwork, since I often stuffed tips in my socks anyway when I was in a rush. As stated above, they are also great for hiding braces or ace bandages.

Also I drew the line at 5" heel height - maybe sounds stupid but I noticed a huuuuuuuge difference in how my knees & hips felt between 5" & 6"+. Avoided stiletto heels for the same reason(along w/ the fact that previous joint damage made them impossible for me to walk in ) & went w/ thicker heels -- noticeably better joint support.

Build up the muscles surrounding your knees, minimise the up&down transitions, do them sloooooooowly when you must do them at all. Use the pole if there is one, either leaning against it or taking it in your hands, lifting up your legs into sm sexy pose & sliding down slowly. Make use of simple pole tricks that work your thighs, core & upper body so you can give your knees a little break.

I had sm noticeable cartilege damage by the time I quit dancing, but my initial problems(sports related) were mainly w/ the tendons. I kept a tennis ball in my dance bag to massage the tenderest parts of my knee, smtg I learnt in physical therapy. Also took probably more inuprofen than is entirely healthy but hey, whatever gets you thru the nite (& sm times the morning after).

Awesome information you guys, thanks! I'll definitely check out the thigh-high boot option, maybe pick myself up a pair to use in between regular days because I imagine those can get very hot and I get very warm quickly. Also the ibuprofen before, during, and after is something that's been suggested to me by a physiotherapist years ago when I was going (not about dancing lol but about any physical activity) so that's a good one too. Massaging & icing it are also what I'll try but damn, if there's no way to get around the sound then what can you do?

No, not yet but I will look into it. A quick Google search turned up a page that suggested fish oil as a supplement to help with cracking knees, which I already take but it's only been about a week or two of regular use. The page also says glucosamine helps repair cartilage so that's good to know as well.

I wake people up at night with my joints popping Nobody has really mentioned it much at work. The music is usually pretty loud. If they seem to notice, I just say that I've been dancing for two years, and that' like 57 in stripper knee years. To combat further damage to my knees, I am a supremely lazy stripper. My stages are a snooze. I am very, very sure to raise and lower keeping my knees aligned over my toes. If shit is slow, I will sit down in a nice comfy chair and prop my feet up. Don't spend too much time on your knees on stage, as it will inflame your knee bursae like a bitch.

Well I'm all for giving a girl eight inch heels if she's gotta have it.

Just saying you don't need it. Though some of these girls with short legs in proportion to their bodies do look better in bigger heels. But you already have nice long legs.

Oh for the OP, the best of all to use is athletic tape--that's the shit that will give you a bionic knee. But it's a bitch to get off. Maybe if you shave your legs right before. or maybe the brace would be enough.

Yeah stop flirting on my thread!

Thank you all for the advice. I think I really need to get a knee brace to wear pretty much in general anyway, lol and I am all for bionic knees via athletic tape. Next time I'm in the city I'll stop by an athletics store and check them out. Thanks all.
