That is totally up to you. I know that not all guests and basics are bad, but I mute them because a disturbingly high amount of them are rude, begging, and demanding. A while back there were a few basics who I really liked. I won't go into all the details of why I don't deal with them anymore, but both of them turned out to be annoying guys who thought compliments are supposed to be a replacement for tipping...and they were dropping hints about "wanting to get to know me better" and wanting to exchange numbers/meet up/send fruit to my house/pay my Sprint bill for me. LMAO. You're not getting my phone number or address, weirdo. Both of them wound up getting banned. Not just for freeloading, but for being creepy as fuck, PMing me to death, and basically having ridiculous expectations of a cam girl (expecting stuff to happen outside of the internet) and taking advantage of my kindness.
Also, with all the trolls that are already on MFC, I feel that keeping guests and basics unmuted is giving even more trolls the opportunity to post nasty, hateful things in public chat. Ever have a beggar ask for something, and when you tell him to tip first he gets all nasty and pissy? Yeah, there's already enough of that coming from some of the
premiums. I wanna keep that chill vibe in my room and have as little drama as possible. Guests and basics should consider themselves lucky that they can even camp out in models' rooms for that long and see nudity (other cam sites would boot them from free chat after a few minutes). They can pay the $19.99 to upgrade if they wish to talk that badly. When they're in your room every night for long periods of time, clearly they see something they like, and they should want to tip you. Some of them will act like they're broke or can't afford it, and
if that's true then they'd better not slip up one day and start bragging about their new iPhones, you know?

And a lot of premiums get annoyed in rooms where guests/basics are loose and out of control, and they'll move on to a different room.
Another thing I've considered is that the amount of comments outing your personal info (whether that's intentional or accidental) is more likely to be higher than before if everyone is free to chat. Some people on the 'net will say whatever fucked up thing they want when their username is Guest12345. Also, if someone you know is browsing MFC for the first time and finds you on there, they're probably watching as a guest and may blurt out "OMG, *real-name*, I didn't know you're on here! How ya been? You still working at *name-of-your-job*?" They're telling all your business and not even realizing what a no-no that is.
