Safado, I do 15+ round trips per year to a variety of cities and for the the past couple of years virtually every airport that I've been through has made people completely empty their pockets and stand, arms up, in a body image scanner. That includes Logan, where I flew out of about 6 months ago. If there is so much as a piece of rolled up lint in your pocket they will pat the offending area down.

Now they do tell people that they can hold up passports and cash in their hands while they are being scanned, but that is probably not what she wants to do if she is trying to be inconspicuous.

Like I said, my advice to Swan is to simply put it in her purse before she gets to the airport.

Last time I flew was last year, Nov 2012 out of Boston. I have been thru the new body scanners a couple of times, the signs said to empty pockets but I always try to leave the money in my pocket, I am paranoid and don't trust those TSA workers not to rob me lol. I will be flying again in two months out of Boston and I will try to do the same thing. Last time in Boston I went tru that new body scanner where you have to put your arms up.

I will take the option of holding the envelope of money in my hand if they tell me to take if out of my pocket. Actually it is possible they made me take it out and hold it while I went thru, I always get stressed going thru security. But I know that the money did not leave my person going thru security.

actually, there's more than one issue involved re carrying cash on US airlines.

First issue, as posted by others, involves US Customs 'capital controls'. Taking $10k or more across the US border ( in either direction ) requires that a US Customs declaration be filed ... which these days will probably be instantly referred to the IRS.

Second issue involves 'security' ... which unfortunately is open to very loose interpretation by US TSA security screeners in regard to the amount of cash which might be considered 'suspicious'. I've heard anecdotal stories of people being pulled out of the airport security line and 'interviewed' for hours regarding their personal history, where the money originated etc. even though the amount of cash involved was under the $10k US Customs limit.

Personally speaking, I never carry more than $1000 in cash when travelling. If higher amounts are involved, I'll purchase multiple money orders ( of less than $1000 each ), make them out to myself, and carry them in my purse with as little attention as possible. But I can no longer even think about carrying $10k or more ( in cash, money orders, gold, or any other form ), as doing so now virtually guarantees IRS attention.

I have flown with a few thousand a few times this year, in an envelope in my make-up bag, and it was never a problem. I've also had my little bag full of condoms and lube and that was never a problem either....the only time I ever got stopped by TSA was because I forgot I had a corkscrew and bottle opener in my purse, which they obviously threw away . That time I also had around 2700 worth of cash and like 20 condoms in a bag and I was never asked about it....but this actually made me realize not to keep my 'supply' bag in my purse/carry-on....

I agree with Safado! Germany is one of the easiest countries to get through. Totally don't worry about it.
I would, however bring as many Euros as possible- not sure when you're leaving but you can order them at your bank if they don't have any in stock. I think it would be counter-intuitive to bring USD.
I personally always stash my cash in the bottom of my makeup bag, it's a train case style ... under a lot of stuff.
