good idea? lol

good idea? lol
I think you forgot to add the bulk of your post. specifics?

yeah, sorry. i am a former cam girl and i'm trying to think of other ideas/alternatives to vanilla jobs that i might end up losing due to my past. self employment seems to be everyone's recommendation, so i'm just trying to see. i don't even know how to start in terms of starting/opening my own business.. but a sex store would seem to be my ideal business to open, lol.
I don't think we can answer to whether or not it's a good idea.
I think a lot goes into opening any business!A lot goes into deciding if it's a good idea to invest time and money into something that huge.
I think that if you're really asking if that'd be a good idea considering your past and being outed and everything...certainly if someone recognized you there would be no reason to deny, I doubt it'd scare off many customers if any! I think perhaps you could provide an awesome point of view and answer questions for people who were purchasing items and outfits to film with! You can say "in my experience, i preferred this item" and whatnot. I dunno if that helps at all!

Try google & see that sex stores are closing down everywhere due to free porn on tubesites.
Dvd sales are almost non-existent. DVDs sell where? adult stores mainly.
Not to mention zoning laws & permits to open one can be very costly. Most neighborhoods don't want an adult store.
Good Luck,
Sam
^Sex stores are closing due to free tube sites? That's interesting. I almost forgot that brick and mortar stores sell DVDs, I always just went for the toys![]()
Opening up ANY type of brick and mortar shop is going to require a substantial upfront investment. I personally would look into having an online sex toy/apparel shop, either with keeping your own stock or using a dropshipper. The start up costs would be significantly less and practically non-existent with you go with drop shipping, although with drop shipping you have far less control. Someone on here actually runs her own online sex toy shop. You should reach out and ask about her experiences.

Think about why go in & buy a dvd for $30to $50 & hope it has good content on it. Or simply sit at home on a computer & these days a ipad or iphone & load free stuff from a tubesite. Guess which one wins out?
Yes, tube sites have put adult stores out of business. Not to mention you can discretely go online & order toys too. All of that has greatly cut into adult stores profits.
Sam
I'm not arguing that free porn on the internet is going to win out over a $20+ physical DVD. In fact I said that *I* never even associated physical adult stores with buying DVDs, but rather with toys, costumes, and the like. All of which, you're right, you can order discretely online. That's why I recommended the OP look into opening an online shop rather than a brick and mortar shop.

^^^ and to make matters even worse, local adult stores must now compete with a national advertising campaign offering 'discrete' online sales of toys directly from the manufacturer ...

We have a few good stores in Houston, like Adam & Eve, Cindie's, Katz, Carmen's Boutique, etc., that seem to do well. They get creative with promotions. Carmen's Boutique offers free pole dancing classes and Carmen (owner) has a late night TV show where she has sexy girls model her outfits and she also shows unique sex toys on TV and explains how they work. Katz has 20% discount days for girls and 20% discount days for the guys. Cindie's has ladies nights with product demos, door prizes, cocktails, "f.a.q. sessions", etc. Adam & Eve has special events, like Nina Hartley dropping by to talk about her career in adult entertainment, the swinging lifestyle, BDSM, etc. These are very nice couple-friendly stores staffed with friendly and knowledgeable female clerks.
There are some other sex stores that cater to specific niches. There is a store in Houston that sells BDSM furniture and equipment that you won't find anywhere else (except the internet, but then, you have to pay shipping and handling costs). We used to have a store that had a very extensive selection of fetish wear, like latex, dominatrix uniforms, gothic fetish, etc., but, unfortunately they went out of business. Another sex store offers hair and make-up services to crossdressers (sorry if that is not the right PC term).
Like any other business, the right location, good marketing, excellent customer service and "standing out above the competition" are key. If you find a good location, spend some money on advertising, and have some great promotional events on a regular and consistent basis, it may be lucrative. You might want to network with local lifestyle groups (BDSM, swingers, fetishists, etc.) and find an underserved niche.
