    Default Taking Care of Feet

I have a very general question about taking care of my feet as a dancer.

Up until this point I've rarely worn heels in my life. I very much had an interest, but I found that they hurt/were difficult to walk in and knew the potential health complications, so I didn't really wear them as much as I wanted to. One of the things that attracted me to dancing was actually the fact that learning to wear heels is basically a job requirement - I would have to do what I wanted to do for a while anyways.

After a month of dancing, I'm pretty much used to heels (working my way up to 7" gradually, currently at 5" and looking for a pair of 6" heels) and can walk fine in them for an entire shift. However, I still have the health concerns, and have noticed some things happening to my feet - one of the most notable of which is that the second-smallest toe on my left foot is often numb. Aside from that, I'm familiar with the studies done and what they say about heels' effects on posture and foot health.

What do you all do to minimize health/posture complications from wearing heels so much?

Hi Mae what is your shoe size. I have big ol' feet myself I wear a 9.5 but but a size 10 so I have room in the shoe to accommodate my toes. I find in the regular clear shoes with the plastic around the toes that I cannot wear a size 9 because if I do it hurts and squeezes my toes until they are sore and or numb like you are talking about. When I am at Christies a lot of the girls take off their shoes when doing a lap dance. I was always told this is a no-no. In my book it just doesn't look sexy at all and then the fact that you are putting your foot over a custys head is not the business to me. Then on top of that after a while our shoes do get the stinking. I can't imagine a customer with no foot fetish having to smell nasty corn chip toes! If I have put in a lot of shifts I go to this place called Green Spa. I have them rub my legs and feet anywhere from 30min up to an hour and it is soo heavenly. Also if you don't want to purchase a larger size they do make stripper shoes with a more square toebox for those with wider feet. If you don't want to do any of the above and you have the clear plastic top, take a blowdryer and heat the plastic part of the shoe and take your hands and stretch it around the toe box, it helps.

I take a size 8 in pretty much everything (sometimes a half size up or down depending on the company). I got a size 8 shoe, which seems to fit pretty well, though my toes do stick out a bit sometimes. I currently have black Pleasers, size 8. If Pleasers has half sizes I'll try on an 8.5 and see how that works.

A pedicure and foot rub sounds heavenly! And eww, I wouldn't want to take my shoes off for dances, haha. No corn chip toes here =P

If you chose shoes with a platform the effect of the heel height will be reduced, meaning it will be "nicer" to your feet!

your toe goes numb? that doesn't sound good. unless its a regular thing, like my finger tips used to go numb and greenish white randomly a few years back..poor circulation. play with your heel sizes, and when you first get shoes you need to take a hair dryer to them and melt the plastic a bit so it moulds to your foot!
as for foot health, there are plenty of exercises and massages to help prevent hammer toe and other deformities. do them every night before bed, and get a good foot rub. wear good supportive shoes on your days off.
bunions are genetic, contrary to popular belief, but if you are genetically inclined towards bunions then wearing tight heels can make them develop sooner.
