So I need something to help me fall asleep. I've heard of melatonin and magnesium, and those are on my to-try list, but are there any others?? I'm interested in natural supplements, not pharmaceuticals. Thanks![]()

the good green stuff! lol.
i agree with chamomile tea also.
turkey meat is a natural sedative , with its "tryptophan".
valerian root capsules are great
not a supplement but exercising a lot, and then taking a very hot bath send me right to sleep

This stuff works amazingly well for me:
http://www.celestialseasonings.com/p...eepytime-extra
It's got to be the Extra. The regular sleepytime doesnt do anything for me. The extra has just the right combo.

My roommate got me to try pumpkin seeds & they work like a charm! Grind them up & mix abt 1 tbs in applesauce.

As a long-time insomniac I've tried pretty much everything, OTC, herbal and prescriptions.
My go-to is Benadryl but as far as supplements, I use Valerian but I have to get the right kind for it to be strong enough to work (the capsule kind doesn't do it for me). I like this kind: http://www.amazon.com/Planetary-Herb...words=valerian
It's like a milder Xanax and I sometimes take it while camming because it loosens me up because it reduces anxiety.
What I really love lately is L-theanine. It really relaxes me and lets me actually just feel tired. The great thing too is that if I wake up in the middle of the night I can take some more and get back to sleep for a few more hours and still wake up when I need to with no sluggishness or drowsiness.
This is what I take: http://www.amazon.com/Now-Foods-L-Th...rds=l-theanine
I'm also taking 5HTP and that seems to help, too. Good luck!
I actually have extreme chronic insomnia. I have done just about every pill, trick and anything else you could imagine to fall asleep. I actually go through months on end of only sleeping one or two nights of the week....its awful, depressing and something I really wish I could figure out. The very best NATURAL sleep aid is supplement called Valerian root, you can find it at any drug store that sells vitamins or vitamin shop. The capsules do smell a little nasty but honestly, these are the way to go if you just have a trouble sleeping. Hopefully this helpsxxx

How long (like how many hours) before you want to fall asleep do you normally take valerian root supplements?
My main issue is that I can't keep the same exact sleep schedule, and I would like to fall asleep and wake up at roughly the same time, but my body doesn't let me.

I havent tried it (yet) but Kava Kava may be good. I've heard about it and im itching to try it soon. They have teas, powders, extracts, etc.

Valeriana root calming+ detox, do not give to cat they are gettinghigh on that. I remember when i was a teen i been very nervious, i took valeriana in pills. And i was very calmmmmmmmmm...andhappy)
I usually take 2 Valerian about an hour or so before sleep. Mind you, it may be much different for you...as I said, I have insane chronic insomnia (think Christian Bale in the Machinist). If my insomnia is okay for a month or two, that stuff works like a dream to get me sleepy. You may not need two, maybe try with one first and about an hour before sleep. There will be no terrible sleeping pill "hangover", it will just make you naturally sleepy. I really hope this helps, there is nothing worse than developing a sleep problem.

I mentioned in verified but...
Valerian root
kava kava
magnesium (moreso for anxiety)

And melatonin has been the worst possible option, for me anyway. Fucked up dreams that are FUUUCCCCKKKEEEDDD UPPP. Feeling generally pretty crazy.

Melatonin tablets- I use the sublinguals that melt in Your mouth, because I can't swallow pills. NOT the liquid melatonin, because for some reason dreams are messed up on that kind of melatonin. You will be asleep in 20 minutes-guaranteed! Also, using ear plugs and an eye mask help as well. Be sure also that You have not been looking at any electronics-computer, mobile phone, computer for at least an hour before bedtime. Hope that helps.

I used melatonin for a long time, but I would recommend reading some about it because there have been studies showing it can cause damage and pressure in your eyes.
Valerian root is amazing, I think it is the cheapest and easiest access- if you are prone to nightmares, be cautious about taking the full recommended 900mg. I only take 450mg, which is half the usual recommended dose and I am usually ok. It isn't unusual for this to happen to some people. It's also an anxiolytic and so during stressful times I have taken (450mg) and still been able to stay awake, but man.. I couldn't have possibly cared less about what was going on. I took it once before work, and my hustle was, "Hey." and "Cool." when normally I'm chatty and not socially dysfunctional. Luckily I found myself a chatty lawyer that just wanted to talk about himself so it worked out oklol I would have definitely been able to just lay down and nap, though!!
Kava is my favourite, though the suppliments are a bit more expensive than Valerian. If you are into mixing your own, you mash the powdered root into water (I use milk and a squeeze of chocolate syrup, with syrup chaser because it tastes horrible) through a net and then squeeze out the liquid. Kava hangovers can happen at REALLY high doses but assuming you're just trying to sleep (vs getting all messed up) you shouldn't encounter problems. I would start out with one capsule as when I hadn't taken it for a long time and took two I experienced tooo much body relaxing and it makes it feel like you can't really move very well. If it happens, it's ok and it won't last for long! I weigh 100, and my man weighs about 150, and he prefers to take 5. I guess it just depends on how much you weigh and how much you personally react to substances. I've noticed Kava lasts 40-50 minutes and so if you go to sleep before it wears off you're good, and when you wake up you're NOT groggy! If you don't go to sleep in time and start feeling restless just take another one or two and you should be totally fine. It's really great.
I also second L-theanine, though now I take a smaller amount of it with the rest of my nootropic stack along with my morning coffee.
If you are more just wanting to relax some and aren't suffering from borderline insomnia you can buy some calm drops.

There are some skeptics about the ingredients, but MOST homeopathic remedies include substances that cannot be used in large doses, and most of the people worried about it reference high dosage studies. They are very very mild and I like to take them to chill a tiny bit. I physically notice a difference, but I think the fact it is a lozenge helps with mindfulness about relaxation. It stays in the mouth, idk 20-30 minutes and tastes very mild, slightly sweet. It reminds me of how MAC lipgloss smells.
Edit: Forgot to mention I'd never heard of magnesium for anxiety, I'll have to read about it. I've been looking for help in this area latelyDo you take it daily or as-needed?

I do take it daily. I've found it to be very helpful since I've been previously prescribed super habit forming meds & I'd rather not now.
NOTE- you are totally right. Kava in large amounts is intense. I've always had it as an additive in, say, a smoothie, so I doubt that I've taken very much in one sitting.

I'm literally going to try all of these. I just want a normal sleep schedule!

Glam, go to The Whole Foods at 3rd and Fairfax. They have it there. It's expensive but it works. Give it a couple nights and I swear you will love it. <3

I always do it approx 30 mins- an hour before I'm aiming to sleep.

Melatonin usually works well for me.

Oh, P.S. The brand that I use is called MIDNITE. You can get it at any cvs, Walgreen, etc. Sometimes supermarkets have it. Go on their website to get a coupon. 28 tabs cost around 10 dollars. They include chamomile, in the mix, and there is also one that adds an aid for minor aches and pains.
Whole foods has another, more potent kind of melatonin, so depending on your tolerance level, that would help too.
All my friends who are in menopause have been bowing to me, every since I turned them on to midnite. They also make a menopausal brand as well.

Besides helping you sleep, melatonin may have other health benefits.
