Default Flu will cost you in NZ

Well this sucks: I was feeling a bit ill on Sunday, but manager couldn't get anyone to cover my shift so I went because didn't want to get fined for not showing up. Wake up next day feeling a lot worse, nose running like Usain Bolt and shit. Tuesday (NYE) the same if not worse, went to the club to see the manager so that I could prove I wasn't making it up to get a free night and go celebrating. She was sympathetic and said that she could tell I was really sick BUT I'd still need to get a doctor's note or I would lose my bond (yes, the fucking bond system). As a Working Holiday traveller seeing a doctor will cost me 80-130 NZ dollars. The "good" thing is that the club doesn't yet have a full ($500) bond from me, only about $300, so if I decide to just say fuck it and leave for good I won't lose that much. Because this really pisses me off that because of The Rules there are only two options: either go and see (waiting might take hours) an expensive doctor for something so mundane as common flu or lose the bond, or go to work when sick and make it worse, infect other girls and customers and generally have a shitty night. No option for proving that you're ill and not trying to skive off by going to meet the manager who could then just take you off the list. Argh. "Independent contractors" my ass.

I'm leaving the club after next week anyway because of traveling so not going there anymore feels very tempting atm (especially as I seriously hate the crap rap they play over and over again). And I could still try my luck at another club that I heard is much more relaxed and propably would take me in even just for a couple nights that I could do before leaving. Wouldn't like to act like a deserter as some of the managers and girls have been very nice, but the stupidity of the situation enrages me.

Management and fellow dancers are nice until you need something from them. I wouldn't feel bad about peacing out from a club that expects me to waste time and money to get a doctor's note for something so ridiculous (not to mention, being in the waiting room will likely make you MORE sick since you will likely be surrounded by people much sicker than you), especially if there is another club to work at and I won't be in town for much longer.

my club did that to me, too. i had strep and laryngitis, at the same time and lost my voice..they could tell i was really sick on the phone ( plus i hadn't called out in a year!) and told me i needed a doctor's note to come back.
well i spent 120 in a quick clinic and got the note..and then when i presented it to my manager, he just walked away and said " whatever, its ok i dont need it". i was SOOO pissed. unfortunately for me, its about the only show in driving distance. but yeah, fuck that! its ridiculous. clubs like that make me so angry!

It was a rule when I worked in NZ almost 4 years ago and it's also a rule at most clubs here in Australia (they usually request a doctor's certificate if you cannot provide 24 hrs notice before cancelling). It's frustrating , because you don't plan on being ill. If you have any type of health insurance then you should be able to claim half back. Otherwise, finding a clinic that do bulk billing will lesson the blow. How long have you been working there? If you haven't paid much bond, then it won't finically hurt you too much to leave. But, if you have been working there for a long period of time, maybe it would be better to cut your losses and get a doctors certificate instead.

Thanks for your replies. I decided to not go back and tried the other club last night which was OK. I'm leaving the city after next week anyway, and the shifts I'll do in the new club suit me much better than the ones I'd have had to do in the old one. Don't think my travel insurance would've covered anything since flu isn't an injury... Anyways, if someone else is in New Zealand on a Working Holiday visa, keep this in mind. Doing the shift while sick isn't that great of an option either especially if the club is freezing because of air con, you might get even sicker.
