    Sad ParaGard problem!

I got the ParaGard copper IUD about 8 or 9 months ago. At first I thought it was a great option mainly because it's hormone free.
The first few months I didn't notice any changes at all. I was just excited I didn't have to worry about birth control for the next ten years!
Around Thanksgiving, people started commenting on my boobs looking bigger, and people at work asking if I got bigger implants. I started noticing my bras felt tighter and the cup size seemed too small. At the time, I blamed it on my period, or bloating, etc.
Fast forward till now, and it's gotten much, much worse. My bras (32DDD, I have 450cc silicone implants)don't even remotely fit and since my boobs have doubled in size, hardly any of my work clothes or regular clothes fit me either.
I saw my doctor and she days it's not from the IUD. She says I'm "getting older" and my "body is changing." To me that's bullshit. I'm 28 and have had the same bra size since I got my implants in 2009. No other part of my body has gained weight either. She wants me to see an endocrinologist a month from now before she will take the IUD out.
Has anyone heard of something like this happening? I feel all alone cause everyone keeps telling me there's no way it's from the IUD, but I really think it must be...Should I just find another doctor who will take it out now? I feel really depressed, confused, and embarrassed by this...

Maybe you're like me, and when you put on just a little bit of weight it all goes to your boobs first?

I haven't moved, and my diet is always pretty much the same. Usually when I gain weight it's in my hips. I'm very healthy and work out religiously.

Did she say what an endocrinologist would look for exactly?

She said they would be looking for too much estrogen and progesterone (I think it's called?)

It is impossible it is from the IUD, as all it contains is plastic and copper.

I considered ParaGard, but there was buzz all over the net about potential problems including hairloss and weight gain. My take on it is this, although it contains no hormones, it does something in the body in order to work. Maybe it stimulates the body's natural hormones. In this case an endocrinologist could determine if the hormones are going haywire.

My understanding is it is the copper itself which kills the sperm as it travels past the cervix. SwanPrincess, I think that might be why your doctor was so adament about your IUD not being the issue. ... because it really is very unlikely.

Yea I hear copper slows thyroid or something...the copper iud def contributes to really heavy/long periods tho.

Mother Fucker Nature really reaaaallly doesn't want us to be able to have recreational sex (without babies).

I can't wait until we can defeat nature. We're not just baby machines !!

When will they come out with the male pill already. Or Vasalgel. I know they've got that stuff ready, but thanks to ridiculous nanny state regulations...

Until then, the woman is always the one who shoulders all the side effects.

Well that devolved into quite the rant. Sorry OP!

That's the thing that's so frustrating! I know it doesn't contain hormones, so people say that's not the problem. BUT, after five years of being the exact same bra size, is it just a coincidence I have a change in birth control and go up three cup sizes? (Again, this is not due to weight gain. I'm still the size 4 I've always been)
I've looked this up online and a lot of people report the same thing. But no one really knows WHY this happens, they just get told they're wrong or crazy to blame the ParaGard.

LibraSnake, what you said about the copper slowing the thyroid is the best answer I've had yet!

Thanks for the input, everyone! I'm counting down the days till I get this removed !

Pretty much like Mirena IUD. And it also have of serious side effects including Nausea, Weight gain, Mild headaches and more.
    Get more information here:

By the way, I think it's best for you take it off, then see what happens. You're doctor might be wrong. No one's perfect you know.

Its been four years now since I decided to have the IUD inserted. The only issues I have since the beginning is the crazy blood flow that lasts 3-4 days. Other then that I am pretty happy with the product. I love the fact that it has no hormones.

I should probably update this thread. I meant to, and it just slipped my mind!

I've had my ParaGard out for about 6 weeks (approximately) and already my boobs are ALMOST back to their 33DDD size they were before I got the IUD.

I feel like ME again! No bloating, headaches, giant boobs taking over my body, etc.

I saw an endocrinologist right before I had it taken out to see if that was really the cause of all my issues. He said it's not common such things happen, but it's not totally unheard of. Apparently some women's bodies think they are pregnant when they have an IUD in them?

I'm disappointed it didn't work out for me, because I really loved the fact it was hormone free.

I've had it for about 6 months. My boobs are bigger too for no apparent reason. I'm ok with it though. If they stay bigger while it's in I won't feel the need to get implants. Lol

I'm a bit envious, honestly! I had Paragard, and all I ever got out of it was a year of monster periods and a lack of babies.

Not to make your problem sound minuscule, but I've had really horrible side effects from the copper iud.

To those who say its impossible to have any side effects, that is simply not true. I had it inserted in December and was having horrible cramping, hair loss, mood swings, brain fog and just felt "off". Had it taken out after 3 weeks and after reading horrible stories on the internet about women experiencing exactly what I did.

Unfortunately I am still not back to normal. And I haven't gotten my period since. Just cause it doesn't have Hormones, doesn't mean it's harmless. I've been on many different birth controls and in hindsight would have chosen those over this horrible little thing.
