Default Has the IRS email you saying that they want you to report all of your income?

    Hello everyone,

I was wondering if any of you guys receive an email from the IRS stating that they want you to report all of your income? I received an email like that last week and they stated they want me to report all of my income from 2013. I was going to report my all of my income anyways but I was wondering if anyone else received either a email or letter in the mail from the IRS stating that?

^^^ this sounds highly unusual !!! Was it the IRS or the California Franchise Tax Board ? I guess it doesn't really matter, since California has an information sharing agreement with the IRS ... thus the Cal FTB could have easily tipped off the IRS.

The only reason I can think of for this might be that the IRS / Cal FTB has become involved in investigating / auditing a particular strip club ... which has resulted in the IRS turning up club file information about the dancers working at that club, and has resulted in the IRS / Cal FTB turning up records of moneys paid out by the club to those dancers ( for 'funny money' cashins, customer credit card charges for VIP split with dancers, etc. ). Thus such an IRS / Cal FTB communication could serve as 'fair warning' to the club's dancers that the IRS / Cal FTB will be paying very close attention to the 2013 tax returns being filed by those dancers over the next couple of months to see if reported income 'jives' with the dancer payout numbers they have ( already ) obtained from club records.

The IRS does not use email to communicate with taxpayers.

The IRS does not use email to contact tax payers. http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-...Scams-for-2013 According to the link above you should report/froward the email to: [email protected]

This sounds like a scam. Do not respond.

Default Re: Has the IRS email you saying that they want you to report all of your income?

^^^ that's why I was trying to find out if the Cal FTB was actually behind this e-mail ... since the IRS itself almost never uses e-mails outside of an active 'proceeding' already having been established involving a particular business or individual !!!

However, there might be yet another possibility ( according to an old friend who lives in Cal ). The Cal FTB has recently established a program where 3rd party 'Bounty Hunters' are now allowed to collect a significant 'commission payment' if they are able to bring about increased tax revenue collections. Like 'bill collectors' of the more conventional type, these tax collection 'Bounty Hunters' are not under much restrictions in terms of direct contact with their prospective 'targets'.

    from

(snip)"The notification that a state or local jurisdiction is going to audit you can cause a range of emotions from mild annoyance to outright paralyzing fear depending on your prior experience and level of compliance. However, state and local tax auditors, on the whole, are a friendly enough group that have a tough job to do and usually do so in a professional manner. Like any group though, there are some individuals who are either out to make a name for themselves or who may seem to have a personal vendetta against you. These individuals can make for some very bad experiences. Now imagine your worst experience, take out some of the checks and balances the state provides, add a profit incentive that encourages aggressiveness and you have the environment in which third-party auditors or collection agents operate. These third parties are often referred to as “bounty hunters.”

The use of third-party auditors is nothing new. State and local governments have been utilizing third-parties in taxpayer compliance for years. Some of these governments have granted vast powers to these third parties such as the ability to investigate, determine nexus and taxability, perform audits, assess and then collect taxes, interest penalties and fines. Many of these audits are done on a contingency basis. One of the arguments for the jurisdictions using bounty hunters, is that these relationships help expand their ability to collect desperately needed additional revenues while operating under the constraints of limited budgets"(snip)

(snip)"These collection companies are scouring all sorts of documents including federal 1099 forms and then sending out letters stating you have been identified as being potentially non-compliant. The letters include nexus questionnaires and tax information worksheets requesting data back to 2007. The letter comes with a warning that “failure to provide the information as requested or to respond in a timely manner may result in a code enforcement action being filed against you"(snip)

Thus it's entirely possible that some highly motivated 3rd party 'Bounty Hunter' outfit has figured out that California dancers might represent lucrative 'targets' for increased tax collection efforts ( thus generating sizeable 'commission payments' ... especially so if they are able to not only assess additional taxes for 2013 but also for up to five previous years ). Apparently, as officially 'anointed' tax collection agents, they are provided with relatively unrestricted access to federal / state tax filing documents such as previous year 1099's issued to dancers by particular strip clubs ... which could in turn be used as a very convenient 'starting point'.

Also, because 3rd party 'Bounty Hunters' are indeed officially 'anointed' tax collection agents, choosing to simply interpret communications received from a 3rd party source regarding tax compliance as a 'scam' ... which warrants being totally ignored ... could potentially involve a significant element of risk !!!

I'd be extremely interested to find out if any other dancers have received similar tax enforcement based communications, by e-mail, snail mail, or whatever.

There are sites that can tell you where an e mail originated. If she wants to fool with it, she could use one of those.

Yeah. Like the I.R.S is going to send an email telling you to report all your income lol. They send certified mail if you haven't paid quarterly with forms included or a letter saying you may not have been accurate in your 2012 filing but yeah emails. Did they ask for any personal info?

^^^ the IRS itself wouldn't !!! But an officially 'anointed' 3rd party tax 'Bounty Hunter' company might !

Agreed that this e-mail needs to be investigated further ... certainly reported to the IRS as phishing if the e-mail actually used an official IRS logo or actually represented the sender as being the IRS itself.

However, because of the possibility of a 3rd party tax 'Bounty Hunter' being involved, simply 'farting off' this communication as a scam would involve some legitimate risk ... i.e. the 3rd party 'Bounty Hunter' could interpret total failure to respond as 'non-cooperation' with an officially sanctioned ( albeit 3rd party ) tax enforcement investigation.

Unfortunately, the OP didn't provide very many details in regard to the actual communication received.

Thank you ladies. I kinda knew it sounded like a scam email. Anyways, I contacted the IRS and had that email reported. I did not give out my information at all because I figure out that it did not have the IRS logo. I just wanted to if anyone ever received this type of email. Plus I contacted the California franchise board...just to make sure it was not them. It was not them either. The information on the email stated that they wanted to all of the income I was going to report for 2013 tax year.

Oh I reported that email to the IRS as soon as I got off of SW because it sounded fishy to say the least. Thanks Melonie for your information

Oh no, I read it and it sounded fishy. After posting this question on SW, I decided to contact the IRS and report this email to them because it just sounds weird.
