    Default Job or Business

I've been camming for 3 years now and have to admit the last year hasn't been very lucrative for me. I think it's due to me seeing camming as a job, as opposed to a business. I log on, hope for a good day and then a few hours later, I log off. Maybe it's because when I first started it was due to me being laid off from a vanilla job and I thought working online would be a temporary thing.

Now I'm starting to wonder though if I should put my full ass in to it, instead of my half ass attitude because there is a lot I like about camming and jobs aren't very plentiful in my town.

I'm curious if you ladies view camming as just a job or a business you're building and if that affects your happiness with camming, your patience with it, your mindset, etc....

    Any opinions are appreciated

I treat camming as my business because I like being my own boss and I actually love being in the adult industry. I am still in the process of earning my Bachelors Degree so I can have that under my belt plus I have a small vanilla job to fall back on since camming is kinda slow. I feel that I make more people happy and I am thanked more and appreciated everyday. My vanilla job never says thanks to me and they pay a lot less money.

I see it as a little of both. Every job stems from some sort of business, vanilla, or adult. I make sure that I try and treat it like a job when it comes time to sticking to some sort of schedule, and like a business when things go sour, or if it comes to promoting outside of the traffic I'm given.

    Job
logging in, or showing up for my shift
    dealing with freeloaders and trolls
    sore back, tiredness
technical difficulties, shit happens, it's part of the job
    making sales
    customer delight, satisfaction
    pristine appearance and camspace
    thinking on ones back/feet

    Business
Not taking anything personal, it's just business
    understanding the ins and outs
understanding and being okay with the amount of percentages I receive
pricing higher based on percentages (explaining to custys: sorry guys, it's just business!)
understanding it's a dog eat dog industry
controlling my attitude on cam, and the atmosphere of my room (job/business)
finding ways to bring in more paying traffic
growth and growth potential...this business is yours and can be as big, or small as you make/want it to be
I/you are the product, it can always "sell" if you use the right tools, and schmooze

I hope I've helped you a bit Holly, there's obviously more but these are what helped me determine the differences and shared differences. Personally seeing it as a job helps me to sign on and hold myself responsible for my own earnings. Seeing it as a business (though short term for me) helps me understand that I can come and go as I please, and I have the ability to let someone else handle all of the business, or I can go the extra mile and grow my own. Business I see as entrepreneurial. Jobs I see as more structural.

To me it's a business, and i treat it as such. I've chosen to make a career out of camming, pso, and clips.

If you want to make it a career you can, but man will you be working your ass off. I do more work off cam than I do on, but it's worth it to me.

I agree with what Kourtney about the differences and would add that you will need to learn many things to run your business: marketing, editing, etc.

To me its a business. Im going to school so there is a career Im working towards but this is my current career. If im online for 40 hours a week, Im actually working 60. Im recording vids for hours just to produce 2 or 3 5 min footage for sale. Im always researching different fetishes, so I can further expand my brand. Im setting up for 20min- an hour before I go on and at the end of the day when Im breaking down the set, Im still not done. I have input my figures into excel, I have to shop around for deals to make sure I stay within my 10% budget for reinvestment back in to my business. When Im not woking, Im thinking about it, when Im not thinking about it Im playing an online sims game about it.
The only time I dont think about camming is when Im on vacation, filming content. Which I know you might say is thinking but I put more energy into hiding the sd card from the cleaning staff

I do know there are sites and studios that pay per hour, if I worked for them this would be a job but as for today ,Its too high a failure risk for me to take it so lightly. Actually I think I could take it a lot more serious so I'd probably be reckless as fuck if this was a job. After 2 mo's, it would only be a recording of me, I would be live once or twice a week and just to record new shit to fake guys with.

Job. I give a good show, am pleasant/upbeat on cam. But...... I could be working longer hours, building my brand, etc. But I'm like fuck it after 3 hours. I make a nice chunk of change and then go about my life I am not a career-minded camgirl at all.

I only see myself camming full time for maybe the next couple of years. Then it will be part time, probably just to pay off a condo faster and to pay for random stuffs.

I just get too worried about the instability of the adult industry, and I wouldn't feel comfortable relying on camming into my 30/40s and beyond. (of course, kudos to those that do or plan to).

    Default Re: Job or Business

I think things took on a whole new life for me when I stopped viewing it as a job. I've been doing this for 12 years now and I don't think at any point I ever made very much doing it. (by that I mean usually 5-10k a year) The last 2 years my attitude has changed completely and I started treating this as more of my business. I'm not going to give exact numbers or anything but I just added up my taxes and know I made more than 30k this time.
I guess that's probably about average( I mean for anyone, not camgirls) In fact it's actually more than my husband was making even 5 years ago busting his ass at work. And it's certainly more than I made at any vanilla type job I've ever had. So I'm really proud of myself.
But my point isn't really about the money. What I've noticed more than anything else by viewing it as a business I am way happier. I guess it actually motivates me more and keeps me in line.
And since I'm not single I am actually married that income gets added in with a partner and makes me realize there is actually hope for the future. And that makes me even happier. You always hope you won't spend your whole life unhappy busting your ass or working and struggling forever. And now it's way more clear to me that I won't have to if I just keep putting in more effort.

Life often does feel like the same shit over and over, wake up,work, eat, shit sleep, wake up, work ,eat ,shit ,sleep.
I never wanted life to be like that. And now it's not. I'll be honest in saying that for me the truth is I've actually worked the least this year and I made the most.

So there's certainly a lot of truth in the saying work smarter not harder.

I should actually state though that I'm not really much of a cam girl anymore. Which is why I feel like I made more and worked less. I am actually independant. I do not work on any websites. And I do not do cam shows rarely at all at this point. I still have a few clients I skype with occasionally. But almost all that income from this year was mostly from video stores or custom clips people have ordered.

So FOR ME...giving up working on any sites or entertaining rooms of men, or waiting for the phone to ring or trying to pick up shows is actually what tripled my income.

It's a job for now...I'm using camming as a way to supplement my husband's income as a social worker and to bring our household back from the brink of bankruptcy. I am a stay at home mom of two kids and even though I have multiple bachelor's degrees, any good paying job around here would require a second car and daycare for my kids (ages 3 and 5). By the time all the expenses added up, it wasn't worth me going to work an out of the house job just to bring home an extra $50 a week. I started PSO work and started camming about 5 months ago...and there is finally a light at the end of our financial black hole. We've paid off everything but one credit card (due to be paid off in August), managed to get through several expensive car repairs and an emergency repair to our roof...things that would have broken us completely a year ago. My husband is pleasantly shocked at how much I can earn in just a few hours of work each night...and we'd like to continue pulling ourselves out of the hole we were in and begin to build a savings/retirement fund.

The plan is to continue camming and PSO work part-time until my son is old enough to go to school - just 8 more months! Then I'll move to three quarter time, filming clips, writing erotica and doing photo shoots during the days and camming/PSO at night when my hubby gets home and takes the kids downstairs. That's when I think my view will switch from this being a job to building my business. I am researching and learning all I can now to help me when I make that switch. I don't think I'll ever go back to a vanilla job again...I'm finally happy and content with the work I do!

definitely serious business. The 'negatives' from camming ... i.e. 1099's showing a history of adult industry work, future facial recognition software matchups of your face with pirated / 3rd party cam pics and videos, etc. ... are introduced almost as soon as one starts working on cam. On the flip side, the amount of money earned is definitely a function of how serious of an effort, and how many hours, you put in on cam. Thus to create a situation where the positives ( money earned ) exceed the negatives ( i.e. possible adult work history hurting future straight career prospects ), a serious effort is required.
