Hey all! I posted this as a comment in Camming Connection about a month back, but I think it might be useful for folks here. I think everyone here knows that breast augmentation comes with risks - but the actual numbers aren't easy to find, and you might be surprised by how high they are.
The friend who gave me the heads-up about this doesn't work in the industry; she wanted BA for herself and had recently received an inheritance that would've covered it. She ultimately decided against it because she wasn't sure she'd have enough money if she ended up needing another operation.A friend of mine discovered that most implants have a fairly high "reoperation" risk - meaning that additional surgeries are needed after the initial procedure. That's not necessarily a big deal medically, but it can be a financial disaster if you're not prepared for it. Here are the rates I pulled off the FDA website:
Mentor saline breast implants: 13% of patients need reoperation within 3 years.
Inamed (now Allergan) saline breast implants: 21% of patients need reoperation with 3 years; 26% within 5 years.
Mentor MemoryGel Silicone Gel-Filled Breast Implants: 15.4% of patients need reoperation within 3 years.
Allergan Natrelle Silicone Gel-Filled Breast Implants: 30.1% of patients need reoperation within 7 years.
Allergan Natrelle 410 Highly Cohesive Anatomically Shaped Silicone-Filled Breast Implants: 30% of patients need reoperation within 7 years.
Sientra Silicone Gel Breast Implants: 13% of patients need reoperation within 3 years.
Bottom line: It's a really good idea to have a boobjob nestegg set aside if you decide to enhance!
Of course, lots of women LOVE their post-BA bodies and would consider another operation or two a small price to pay to have the breasts they want.
