Default For older entertainers 30+ years of age

Hello. I am 32 years of age. I have been dancing for 10 years. I have a general question for my veteran sisters. It seems that in the last 2 years or so, I just can't do what I used to do. By this, I mean, I can put in 3 days, (mid shift - 3 - 10pm. I bail early) 4 days is pretty much non existent. I look still to be around 24, I am a hustler from hell, I live in Vip, I average between $600- $1000 per night. I state this so that you can get an idea of my typical work night. I can be on a great run but give me about 3 weeks of this and I crash.... almost for a whole week! If not, at least 4 full days and then it still takes an extra day or so to get up and running again, I am out for the count, sleeping non stop and just flat wore out. (I'm trying to start a new paragraph, it won't let me. ;/) Anyway, I hear other women saying how they work 4-6 days/nights a week and I'm like in shock. When I was younger, I could pull 5 but no more than that. Do other women get as tired as I do? Do you have secrets to help you with your energy level? What do you do when your body says, "Okay, done. Sit the hell down." I wouldn't mind it so much if I really just didn't like missing a whole week. That's money that can go in savings... that's money period. I am all about the dollar. I understand that the way I run my business must count for my tiring as well. I keep myself busy almost the entire day. My stages are performances, acquiring tippers and when I leave stage, I am wore out but I clean up and head back to the floor. I would say there might be a combined total of 2 hours max that I break. I am not one to sit and chat for a lifetime, waiting to be asked for a dance. I table jump, spend the minimum amount of time on the sale and asap, grab their hand and head to the back for their dances. Business, business. ..... I guess I am just realizing that as I age, my body needs more rest....... And I don't like it! lol. Any tips from the Hustler veterans out there??

I'm 35, 15 years in. It's okay to rest when you have to. Unfortunately the economy isn't what it was so we have to work extra days to make stripping worth it. By the third day of a 4 night stretch I don't leave my couch until it's time to get ready. I miss a week here and there if I have horrible PMS or something. This is ok. Listening to your body is most important because we're trying to stay young right? I think the major reason I still look young is that I have always taken rest when I needed it.

Getting ready is a ritual for me that sometimes includes ingesting a couple cups of good espresso.

Lots of water, plant based diet, minimize drinking, exercise on days off (yoga, Pilates, weights, cardio) mix it up. All these things I do to stay young but they also help with energy. I stopped working late hours (10pm to 6am) because it was too taxing on my system. Found a club with hours that work for me. I see you did the same.

I've never been a big stage girl and would rather hustle the floor. Maybe ease up on the stage performances if they wear you out and focus on hustling VIP or dances. That's where most of the money is and the majority of guys don't care if you can do acrobatics on stage.

Sounds like you're hanging in there pretty well. As long as you are maintaining your mental and physical health don't worry that you need extra rest.

I'll concur that, regardless of how old you might look on the outside, your body knows how old you really are on the inside. Knees ? Back ? Feet ? general energy level ? recoup time after a night of heavy 'partying' ? Yup !!!

My best advice is to A. set your schedule such that you don't severely over-tax what your body is able to do without 'complaining' ( for me this meant taking every 4th week off to rest up, heal up, diet, catch up on workouts etc. ), and B. when you ARE working, do what you gotta do to earn the big $$$ ( and worry about the pain later ).

I eat and exercise as if I'm a professional athlete. I never drink at work and make sure to get plenty of sleep. I was able to work 6 nights a week at 32, but feel pretty wiped out after just 3 days in a row now (I'm 44).

Try working day shifts. It could be that you are a day time person and your body needs sleep at night. Also, eating clean (avoiding sugar and refined grains) will help you power through. On your days off try cardio training with intervals. Do something low impact like the elliptical trainer or bike. This will increase your endurance in a short period of time. Perhaps hiring a personal trainer would be helpful, too.

I'm not sure if it's age at only 32. I'm in my early 20s and usually always tired/exhausted and feel weak a lot just from normal exercise, maybe it's some nutritional deficiency?

I'm 28 and dancing almost 10 years. This is a consist complaint I have. When I started I could pull 5 days per week easy. Now 3 days in a row is the most I can handle, 4 days if I have a break day in between. I don't drink at work and workout regularly but my body just can't handle the strain.

Some thing I have done to help:

Take Advil before leaving for work to counteract the aches and pains
Ice my knees after work as I'm falling asleep
Put arnica on my knees after work
    Stretch before and after work
Eat a well balanced meal at the end of my shift and before work

I'm 29 and in better shape than most of the 18 year old roly polys. I don't have the luxury of being able to eat like shit and look like shit.

Eat clean, work out and flaunt what you've got! Yeah I might have to work twice as hard because I don't have the luxury of a high metabolism. But you know what? I look and feel 100x better. Anybody can be young. It doesn't last forever.

I'll be 33 this year and can only handle 2 days a week at the club, but that has more to with the mental exhaustion of this job, not the physical. My friend at work is almost 38 with 2 kids, and works 5 days a week. I don't know how she does it, but she loves dancing and has no intention of stopping anytime soon. If you take care of yourself and are physically healthy, I don't see why being over 30 has to mean your body can't handle the rigors of dancing.

OMG, I'm 32..... Dancing for 9 years and I feel the same way. I'm
A group fitness instructor part time so I'm
Active, fit and I eat really well and stay hydrated.
However I also am a mommy to a 6 year old and like you I just. Can't.do it. Working 3 nights in a row is out of the question. I have to alternate one on one off. I get up at 6:30 am 3 days a week. It's hard cuz I feel like if I went in more I could bank mega but I just DO NOT Have the energy. It is what it is. I take adderall when
Feeling like I just can't hack it but need to work. Because I wake up so early
My natural body clock is set to wind down
At about 9 pm..... There isn't even money in my club until after 11.
It's a struggle. You're not the only one.

This sounds like me. I've been trying to make myself stay up later, and sleep in later in an attempt to earn more money. I may try the 4-11pm shifts this week just to see if I can handle it. It is like a timer goes off in my head at 9pm that it is now time to go home.

My tips for looking young and beating the game:
    1) Invest in a microwave fish steamer. I got mine for my birthday and it is my new best friend.
    2) Sunlight and tanning are evil. Don't do it. Just don't.
3)Exercise is a must. Let's face it, we are getting older. If we want to stay on top of our game that means putting in the work.
4)Alcohol, cigarettes, etc. Cut them out if you can.
5)Keep yourself current without being "trendy". Let the young set do the Imagine Dragons and Ke$ha crap. I stick to GNR and Metallica.
    6) Always remember that "HOT" is not a number. Here's to not looking or feeling our ages and giving the fat little doughballs a run for their money in their Payless heels!

Im almost 34 and I look mid 20's. Dancing since '05. Paleo and fructose free. I no longer drink, drug, or smoke, at all. When I meditate, walk daily, workout 2-3 times perweek, and get weekly massages, I'm at my best- sore after a shift but quick recovery and energy levels.

I work 2 10hr shifts, very occasionally 3. Each of us is an individual and need to listen to our own bodies. Our minds don't always give us the best advice, as Melonie said "our bodies know we are older".

I perform on stage, I am working when Im in the club, I take a 10, 20, 30 min break if I need too, I eat a high protein meal at the 5hr mark, + for later handful nuts as snack, fruit and yoghurt snack.

Is there a nonstripping option for the 4th week workwise? If not, change ow you roster yourself? Maybe this is just where the balance lies

I can't work more than 3 days in a row because I will get mentally exhausted. My body can handle it (32). I work days now, which helps. I worked a night shift a few weeks ago and I couldn't handle it. At least when the sun is up I can step onto our patio for a few minutes and it wakes me up a little. While other people have suggested eating better and taking breaks, I find that breaks make me feel lazy, like I don't want to chat anymore. I try to work all day without eating and only a 2-3 minute break occasionally for the bathroom and makeup. The day goes by a lot faster that way.

From what it sounds, you can handle the physical part. Even with exhaustion, you wouldn't need more than 2-3 days off. It sounds like this is mental burnout. Just the same as dancers needing a pre-work ritual, What you need to do is create a pampering routine. After your last work shift every week, spoil yourself. Not buy blowing $500 on clothing, that's for newer, less economical thinkers. Instead, spoil yourself in a way that also allows for self betterment. Thank your body. Start by going to a very early hot yoga class. Immediately afterward, head over to a local massage parlor and treat yourself to a LOWER body massage, followed by a 20 min facial. Then go and have a fruit filled healthy lunch. Before bed this night, take a very hot bath. You will wake up entirely rejuvenated and renewed. You need this. It will cost you around $130/wk, perhaps less. Way less money than taking a full week off of work, plus you have the benefit of better skin and a better immune system. Love yourself back!

Economical alternatives: a local gym or rec center usually offers guest per day passes and have steam rooms/sauna and hot tubs. Plus an am yoga class. This will cost approx $75/month.

***the reason I suggest heat via hot yoga, steam rooms and hot tubs is because as dancers! we are CONSTANTLY telling out body to STAY ON!! Through our mind, we train our body not to fully rest. We are athletes. It takes an outside force to quiet our minds and beat our muscles into relaxation. As a traveling dancer, I soak nightly after work, simply because every day of work I lose COSTS me money.

I hope this helps, sweetheart. And if you ever want company, pm me about this great club you are working at!

Is stage really that important to you? Do you make a lot or even the majority of your money off stage? Couldn't you pay to stay off stage? Most older dancers I know (that bank) don't do stage anymore. They make most of their money off rooms and some private dances.

It depends on the area. At my club the stage brings an extra $200 or so/night (usually go up 2-3x) and is an "advertising platform." I move really well and always get dances and sometimes rooms after going on stage.

I'm not sure if you do pole tricks or not on stage, but maybe concentrating more on floor work may help? The older I've gotten (I'll be 30 this year, and have danced full time), I've realized my body can't handle pole tricks as easily anymore. I actually feel like doing more floor work instead helps reserve the energy I do have.

I also drink a ton of water throughout my shift. The more hydrated you are the better you may feel.

No, for some reason I don't. I also don't eat breakfast before work. I usually have a grande starbucks which is full of sugar and fat, but that's it til I get out of work. Sometimes I don't eat a meal til 8 or 9pm. I know that sounds crazy. It's kind of an alcoholic's diet since I have 5-8 crown and cokes per day. On days when I don't dance I usually just have a few small meals throughout the day, and a bigger dinner. And way less alcohol.

I give myself a lot of time in the morning, getting up at 8 even though I don't have to be at the club til 11. I walk my dog, shower, do my hair, and run errands before work. This takes a lot off of my mind so I don't feel like there is more work waiting for me when I get out of the club. That way I can focus on talking to people and getting money. I also work out on at least one of my days off so that I feel better about how I look.

    I quit for 2 reasons.
1.) I lived in an area that basically forced you to work 2 slow shifts (meaning often $0 nights for everyone in the club due to lack of foot traffic), which meant I would have to work an additional 3 days if I wanted to make good money. No thanks. and
2.) I started getting really bad spontaneous arthritis, and arthritis + required set schedule did not mix.

So then I moved to camming, which I am very happy with. I average more camming because it is very steady for me. But I know I'm in the minority. I wouldn't mind travel dancing 1 week out of the month if I can find a good location. I have my eye on a few.
