My chinchilla ate some gum that contained xylitol (which is poisonous) late last night. I brought her to the vet this morning. She needs to stay for up to 48 hours. Even if the gum hadn't contained xylitol she would still be at risk of GI stasis from intestinal blockage (also potentially fatal), but the vet is more concerned about poisoning. They're drawing blood frequently to monitor glucose levels and have hooked her up to an IV to flush out her liver.
The vet didn't mention death but I can't help dreading the worst. Looking at her empty cage breaks my heart. And I know that regardless of whether or not she makes it she must be suffering right now. Unfamiliar places and people can be terrifying for them to begin with, and I can't imagine what being punctured and prodded while restrained on top of everything else must be like for her right now.
