Default Google just takes Giant Step towards 'outing' dancers and camgirls

In past threads discussing the creation of 'paper trails' that could potentially allow future employers ( and state professional licensing agencies ) to discover that a future job ( or license ) applicant has a history of work in the 'adult' industry, the possible risk of the future widespread use of facial recognition technology was raised. Unlike 'paper trails' which stem from 1099 tax documents, dancer's licenses etc., facial recognition technology could potentially link the facial features from a future job applicant's photo with existing promo images on strip club websites, webcam host sites, etc. as well as uploaded / pirated images on tube sites, upload sites, social media sites etc.

Well the 'future' just became the 'present' ... from

(snip)"Just When You Thought Google Glass Couldn't Get Creepier: New App Allows Strangers to ID You Just by Looking at You

Have you ever seen someone wearing Google Glass out at the bar? Like a real person at a real bar actually wearing Google Glass? If so, you know how absolutely ridiculous they look. Which may be the only factor we have that will stop this:

A new app will allow total strangers to ID you and pull up all your information, just by looking at you and scanning your face with their Google Glass. The app is called NameTag and it sounds CREEPY.

The "real-time facial recognition" software "can detect a face using the Google Glass camera, send it wirelessly to a server, compare it to millions of records, and in seconds return a match complete with a name, additional photos and social media profiles."

The information listed could include your name, occupation, any social media profiles you have set up and whether or not you have a criminal record ("CRIMINAL HISTORY FOUND" pops up in bright red letters according to the demo).

And NameTag may have already added you to their database.

Two million entries have already been uploaded to FacialNetwork.com. Once the app officially goes live, you can sign up for NameTag and opt-out, instead of the alternative: Having to opt-in to allow them to show your information.

    How is that OK?

"It's not about invading anyone's privacy," one NameTag's creators claimed (via Independent). "It's about connecting people that want to be connected. We will even allow users to have one profile that is seen during business hours and another that is seen in social situations. NameTag can make the big, anonymous world we live in as friendly as a small town."

It may not be about invading anyone's privacy, but that sounds like what it does. And forcing people to opt-out if they want to maintain their privacy is wrong (we would go so far as to say it should be illegal). But the purported benefits of the app are almost even worse:

They continue, "It's much easier to meet interesting new people when we can simply look at someone, see their Facebook, review their LinkedIn page or maybe even see their dating site profile. Often we were interacting with people blindly or not interacting at all. NameTag on Google Glass can change all that."

    Gross.

It's enough to make you root for that app that lets you film Google Glass porn. If you had to pick one. Luckily, Google has banned facial-recognition software from the Glass—for now."(snip)

I imagine this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOPWsh-DFUs will be what happens. I wonder if it only works with a live person or if they can be looking at their computer screen and have it work?

Facial recognition software apparently works best with a 'still' HD image. But it should work with a HD video as well as a live 'video'.

More and more places where I live are banning Google Glass, including the ones with prescription lenses.

Unfortunately there are people out there who get their jollies of exposing people as well. Sad state of affairs we live in.

'Not abt invading privacy'? Bull. Shit. Do these creators seriously not consider these possibilities when they put this shit together?

SW is really the only social-media type thing that I am active on. Other than SW I have an ancient Hi5(totally dating myself here) page that I have not touched in yrs & am getting around to taking down. All the same, the idea of seeing sm1 in a bar looking at me w/ this thing on kinda makes me sick to my stomach.

That is beyond creepy... even if I wasn't a stripper I would NOT want some stranger to be able to pull up my name just by looking at me... from there he can find out anything he wants.

This seriously makes me sick, it won't end well for us.

^^^ even if Google is currently banning the 'general' use of facial recognition software on Google Glass, the other points are still very disturbing

    - a massive searchable private database of 'faces' is already being assembled ( on top of the gov't databases of 'faces' which already exist )

    - the facial recognition software already exists in the private sector, is 'affordable', and apparently works very well

    - either of these can undoubtedly be utilized on different 'platforms' besides Google Glass

This seriously makes me sick, it won't end well for us.
Agreed ! Prospective future 'straight job' employers will certainly find 'affordable' facial recognition software as a less expensive alternative to background check services ... or those background check services will incorporate facial recognition + database search capability as a future offering.

I would be particularly concerned for girls who are presently investing several years and tens of thousands of dollars to obtain college degrees, based on the assumption that their 'adult' industry work background won't limit their 'straight job' opportunities once they graduate a few years from now !!!

In a more general sense, even at a 'social' level, the idea that new 'acquaintances' may soon have the ability to simply 'look' at a girl, and within seconds turn up info that she is / was a 'stripper', that her credit rating sucks, etc. is likely to lead to pre-emptive defensive reactions or 'mercenary' assumptions based on the Hollywood 'stripper' stereotype. 21st century version of 'the Scarlet Letter' ???

On the flip side, the idea that 'pervs' and/or adamant 'regulars' or even tax agents could quickly turn up the real name and real address of every dancer in a club is equally 'scary'. I can easily envision states that allow 'bounty hunter' private sector tax agents actively encouraging a high-tech equipped 'bounty hunter' to check out every dancer in every strip club in the state, and then doing a state tax return cross-check based on the dancer 'identities' provided !!! The tax 'bounty hunter' scenario is the scariest of all, since they would have access to the database of state DMV driver's license photos for match-ups etc.

I'm glad I photograph very different than I look IRL
You may not 'look' any different to the facial recognition algorithm. Supposedly, it utilizes biometric data like relative eye position, shape, and size, the position of 'corner' points on the nose and mouth, outline points of the chin, distances between the eyes, nose and chin etc. for match-ups. Hair color or length, glasses, contact lenses, makeup etc. apparently make no difference whatsoever. Supposedly, the only way to 'escape' biometric match-up is major plastic surgery.

Also, it's not just Google Glass anymore ... from

(snip)"Bay Area Researcher Developing Facial Recognition Glasses To Help Stop Crime

MOUNTAIN VIEW (KPIX 5) – By now, you have probably heard about the Google Glass wearable computer. Soon, a Mountain View startup will begin selling 3-D eyewear with technology so sophisticated, it could help crime fighters stop crime before it happens.

It’s not a new concept. The 2002 Hollywood film “Minority Report” gave us a look into the future when actor Tom Cruise catches and arrests a criminal before he commits the crime.

Allen Yang is a University of California at Berkeley researcher and founder of Atheer, the startup developing the glasses.

The 3-D glasses are a wearable computer where users are wirelessly immersed in their own computer through virtual images.

“…And it’s streaming live from the internet to your glasses,” said Theo Goguely, senior product manager at Atheer.

The glasses will ultimately be used by business for work or for regular users for entertainment.(snip)

(snip)" Current facial recognition programs were limited in identifying the low resolution images of the suspects from surveillance cameras.

But Yang said Atheer has developed a better mousetrap. Even if 60 percent of the image is corrupted, Yang said his company’s technology can convert it to an identifiable image.

Yang said the [ crowd scanning - sic ] program will be available within two or three years and could help police identify known suspects before they commit another crime.

“In the optimal scenario, they can actually get an alert when they’re patrolling on the streets and they can prevent something from happening before even the event happens,” said Yang.

In addition, the [ crowd scanning -sic ] program can be used on surveillance cameras on bridges, roads or buildings to help find missing or kidnapped people.

The 3-D glasses will available next month. The cost: $350 for a model that connects to smart phones and $850 for the standalone version."(snip)

    and from

(snip)"The Atheer Developer Kit is scheduled to ship Q1 2014. The Atheer One (right) will ship in Q4 2014, said Soulaiman Itani, company founder and CEO. The company has been granted several patents for its technology, covering vision optimization and face recognition algorithms.

The developer hardware consists of glasses, weighing 75 grams, and a pocket-sized computer to power the apps. The glasses have twin high-definition, 1024x768-pixel displays, and a 36-degree field of view (equivalent to a 15-inch tablet at half arm's length). The Atheer Development Kit will cost $850 and be available in the first quarter of 2014.

"Our number one target is commercial applications, and we are also looking for verticals like sports and gaming," said Soulaiman Itani, Atheer Labs founder and CEO.

At the end of 2014, the company expects to ship the Atheer One to consumers craving to be at the frontier of virtual, wearable computing. Unlike the Development Kit, the Atheer One will be tethered to an Android phone, and have the capability to run the nearly one billion Android apps without modification"(snip)

    also from

(snip)"The Lambda Labs facial recognition API [ Android App - sic ] has been in operation since last year, and is currently used by about 1,000 developers. This new technology would allow third-party Glass devs to build apps that utilize Lambda Labs' system to remember and recognize faces, but not in real time. The Google Mirror API doesn't currently allow for live streaming camera data to a remote developer's server. Users would have to snap a photo, send it to the facial recognition app, then wait for the results to come back. This would result in a few seconds of delay (snip)

... thus we appear to be talking about months, not years, away ... and at a cost that every business and a lot of individual 'consumers' can easily afford !!!

New York and Chicago are doing the same thing, it is an expansion of the tech they use to scan all license plates. They scan for the reflections, capture the numbers, and it instantly runs it through their database. They say it is for finding stolen cars, but they use it for ticket enforcement and cross checking for arrest warrants associated with the owners.

^^^ well, within a couple of years New York and Chicago may upgrade from license plate ID software to facial recognition software via the crowd scanning facial recognition software described above. That way they can do automatic cross checks for arrest warrants etc. on people who are walking as well as driving !!!

However, other than the possibility of income tax 'bounty hunters' making future facial recognition ID sweeps of strip clubs, I'd be more concerned about being ID'd by a 'customer', or by a future 'straight job' employer, than by the gov't !!!

'It's about connecting people that want to be connected.'

yeah we have facebook for that. What if the person being scanned doesn't want to be connected? What if they're the kind who changed their SSN and are running away from a psychopathic ex husband?

The opting out should be the default, not the other way around.

"It's much easier to meet interesting new people when we can simply look at someone, see their Facebook, review their LinkedIn page or maybe even see their dating site profile. Often we were interacting with people blindly or not interacting at all. NameTag on Google Glass can change all that"

That is utterly creepy. If you're so interested in someone, go up to them and talk to them. Not just take a photo of them and try to look through their LinkedIn without them knowing. Seems like the app is made more for avoiding interaction/confrontation.

even though i have no intention of being employed by a straight white collar place ( when i finally transition out of dancing i want to be working for myself), i don't want to be easy to stalk, no matter what im doing!! sounds like a serious, creepy invasion of privacy to me, for anybody! glad it isn't in use for the time being.

Indeed ... with these Icis Bold glasses which will soon be released, it's going to be next to impossible to tell if a customer walking into your club is simply wearing regular eyeglasses or wearing 'smart glasses' that can take your picture and run a facial recognition match, capture a video stream etc. !!!

(snip)"Next year, Icis Bold will be available, and it comes with an 800 x 600 pixel resolution display, 1GB of RAM, plus a 5-megapixel camera with a 720p video recording mode.

While the tech and software is a big part of Icis, Laforge Optical also wanted to create stylish and fashionable frames. Unlike Google Glass, Icis’ optics are blended into the lens, and the hardware is hidden away by an all-encompassing chassis with 50/50 weight distribution, designed to make the glasses look and feel like regular glasses.(snip)

^^^ check out the video at the above link, showing various versions of the Icis Bold 'smart glasses' prototypes being worn

Apparently, LaForge Icis will also be able to grind their embedded display lenses to match individual eyeglass prescriptions !

well, in a strip club context, I can easily envision a very popular new use. Customer snaps pics of various dancers ... search results match up with strip club list blog posts made by other strip club customers, showing that dancer X doesn't do 'extras', dancer Y does HJ's and BJ's in VIP, while dancer Z will provide FS outside the club, etc. !!! Along similar lines, search results could also match up to a particular dancer being married, being financially distressed ( delinquent debts on credit report ), being involved in a family court case, having a criminal record as the result of a previous bust, etc.

From the point of view of an 'exploitive' strip club customer, such up-front intel could save the customer a great deal of money by being able to immediately 'skip over' dancers whose past 'history' doesn't match the customer's expectations and 'hook up' with particular dancers who are most likely to fulfill those expectations.

I guess this would A) fall under Americans w/ Disabilities bs (altho could you imagine that lawsuit!) & B) think there is any chance sm creepy ass tech freak is trying to adapt this technology for contact lenses? I admit I may be having a Munch moment there but it's still a pretty scary thought.

^^^ I guess the underlying legal point about 'privacy' involves the supposed rights a person surrenders when they choose to engage in a 'public perfomance' ... i.e. exotic dancing or camming ... in exchange for money. Simply walking down a public street theoretically provides a higher expectation of privacy than engaging in a 'public performance', but still not a total expectation. Thus police departments as well as luxury department stores / shopping malls are already ( legally ) utilizing facial recognition technology to identify persons of interest.

In regard to the future legal liability of Google or LaForge / Icis, the best analogy I can think of would be Smith & Wesson or Lamson Cutlery. The builder of a 'tool' can't be held responsible for all of the possible or ways in which that 'tool' can be (mis)used by its buyer.

Not wanting to drift off-topic too far, but Americans have arguably been surrendering various 'privacy' rights since Social Security was instituted some 75 years ago. 'privacy' rights took another major hit with the passage of the Patriot Act after the 9/11/2001 attack. Most recently, the US Justice Dep't and a 'lack of interest' on the part of the US Supreme Court have de-facto granted the NSA, the IRS etc. the ability to 'invade' anybody's privacy. There's no reason to expect that this 'slippery slope' is going to take an uphill turn when individuals are able to utilize the same 'privacy invading' technologies which gov't agencies have had access to for several years. After all, right now there's no law preventing a millionaire customer from hiring a private investigator to ascertain the real identity of an exotic dancer by 'conventional' means ... facial recognition software simply makes such private investigation much faster and much less expensive.

If you look at the legal arguments made regarding 'sex offender' registration i.e. that law abiding people have a 'right to know' if their neighbor poses a potential risk to themselves or their children, those same legal arguments could potentially be directly extended to a private individual utilizing facial recognition technology to inform themselves of any elevated risk posed by friends, neighbors, acquaintances etc. But, as is typical, it will probably take 10 years for the law to 'catch up' with the advancing technology.

... in the way of an update, today the Google Glass is finally being offered for sale to the 'general public' ... at a $1500 price. See

... however, in the way of a more disturbing update, Google just filed this patent for a CONTACT LENS based Google Glass !!! from

(snip)Google has patented a smart contact lens that could see its Glass wearable computer fit inside a smart lens. ***

Now it has revealed plans for a lens with a camera built in - opening the possibility of its Glass system being shrunk down significantly, offering features such as 'superzoom' to wearers ***

The lens also has wireless capabilities allowing it to link to a smartphone, which can be used to process data and give the user audio commands.

Google also says the system will be able to detect faces (snip)

... thus while Google Glass and competing products that will hit the market this year are somewhat conspicuous due to their need for the glasses frame, and will hopefully allow some 'regulation' regarding where they may be worn ( to avoid unwanted video recording, unwanted facial recognition based identification etc. ), within a couple of years this latest contact lens based technology could make 'GlassHoles' impossible to recognize or 'regulate'.

Typical unethical and uncontrolled use of technology by those hoping to extract a few million by their exploitation of all of us. I didn't expect it by google, but I suppose they are getting just as unethical of most other big corporations. They more money people have THE MORE EXPLOITATIVE OF OTHERS THEY BECOME.
chances are if he looked at my profile he got an instant boner. Men get horny around me all the time. That is their fault.. not mine.
    Yeah! Right!
Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

With multiple 'smart glass' developers marketing their hardware, and with even more 3rd party facial recognition software developers, there won't be any truly effective means to 'opt out'.
