I have a bank account that I can use in the UK, HSBC-- I've saved up over $15,000 for this move so no way I'm bringing that cash with me! But the issue is more that I'm gonna be coming home with cash from work when I'm there cause I'm not gonna go to the bank to deposit every night.
^You can always deposit the bulk of your money at an ATM, especially if there's one from your branch near the club/your place, just to minimize how much you're bringing into the house.

If you do end up telling your flatmates what you are doing. You could just casually drop into conversation that you deposit money everyday/after work. Even if its not true if they dont think you have cash lying around then there less likely to try anything.

Yeah I didn't know, lol. It's really hard to find affordable, legit vacation rental websites online-- most places I looked at were 400+ pounds a week. And I didn't want to sublet from someone I didn't know, arrive in the UK with my three suitcases and find out either they were a total psycho or they had scammed me. I felt comfortable with this agency and this was the cheapest studio they had. Right now I just have it rented for two weeks and most of the people I've been talking to want someone to move in ASAP-- I actually got turned down from the apartment I liked the most because I told them I couldn't move in for two and a half weeks-- so hopefully I'll just end up having to be there for 2 weeks. I guess it just depends how fast I find people I'm comfortable with, since that's more important to me than the areas honestly.
I've been apartment searching the last few days and it's REALLY frustrating. Not only is London big but it's got like a million fucking areas and I know the basic outline, but whenever I've visited London I've mostly just done the touristy crap, gone shopping, or gone to see theatre, so I've never really been out of West London/Central. I'm constantly researching areas on google and it's hard to tell from google where you'd like to live! My top two places right now are Camden Town and Shoreditch.
But thanks for the suggestion Britchick. I would just deposit it on my way home, I just won't have a car so I don't know how out of the way an ATM branch will be.

Don't tell your flatmates what you do, say your doing bar work or working in events, you can find rooms to rent on Gumtree.com and there are a few agencies too. PM me if you need any info.

Given your situation, I think you'd be way better off getting used to doing the daily ATM dropoff.
Here's the good news: http://hsbc.banklocationmaps.com/uni...united_kingdom.
With 97 ATM's in the London area, it would be sheer bad luck if an HSBC ATM wasn't on your way home. Hope that helps.![]()

When do you move? This is exciting. I'm living vicariously as I'm tied to this area for while until I've finished renovating this fixer upper... Are you still going to look for a plave w roomies or the studio?

^I leave Sunday but I get there Monday... I'm getting really nervous! lol.
I'm gonna stay in the studio for at least two weeks since I've already given them a sizeable deposit. Hopefully I can find a roommate in those two weeks... if not I'll stay the whole month. Honestly it's expensive but cheaper than a hotel and I don't really want to move all my crap into another vacation rental or sublet for another few weeks while I look.
I looked on gumtree for sublets/vacation rentals but I just got a weird vibe from a lot of the agencies I dealt with there that were in my price range so I stated just purely dealing with agencies that I could find lots of reviews for online. I have been looking there on and off for roommates but but I sort of gave up just because there were SO many adds and people never post info about themselves in their adds. Which is stupid to me! If I'm gonna live in an apartment with you I want to know you have a good job so you're not going to be having problems making the rent, you aren't a total weirdo, and I at LEAST want to know want gender you are since I'm not down with the idea of sharing a two bedroom apartment with a guy or a 4 bedroom apartment with 3 guys. So I've been using flatshare.com which is just a bit easier to deal with... I know it's probably not as popular as gumtree is but are there any of similar sites you'd recommend?

Super jealous. I'm gonna do a London/Paris trip later this year, let me know how it goes! Don't be nervous, I'm sure they'll think you're exotic being from LA and all! There's a lot of girls on here that live in the UK. Maybe start a new thread because this is under a roommate heading...

^Well I'm nervous cause I'm not taking a trip I'm moving there permanently for the next two and a half yearsbut yes sorry guys this thread has gone way off topic!

The two sites mentioned are the best, I used them a lot over the years.

Well, it's not like it's a generic question thread - the original question was related to your move from US to UK, which is a HUGE event - and likely to bring up a lot more issues/ideas than anyone could anticipate. If you want to be technical, then sure the title could be "Moving to UK - roommate/general advice" - but it's not like this is a topic that you're trying to get a general discussion going - there's nothing wrong with getting help on all aspects of your RL issue that brought up the move.
We understand how big of a change this is, so happy to help in any way we can advice-wise...
And while I'd probably cream in my pants if I was a 20-25 year old guy who could find attractive female roommates (oh to be that young again - wait, no I don't really want that), yes, there's no need to add more variables to the mix LOL.
One other comment - the London tube system is very good, Europe's public transit puts North American systems to shame - so being close to the tube lines is something else to look for (which are mostly underground, a huge plus, unlike cities like Chicago, where being close = HUGE noise). Most people in London do not need a car, if they don't live in the suburbs and commute (and even then, the tube system is so good, it's miles ahead of most NA cities).

Well thus far this has not been an issue as I have not found anywhere suitable to live! I've visited a ton of flats, probably about 6 now, and I either hated the flat or the people living there gave me a weird vibe. The only place I've seen that I liked was this gorgeous flat in Nottinghill that was insanely well-priced, but it was the very first flat I visited and I felt like I needed to check out more of the city before I could decide. And now of course it's already been snapped up.
I'm getting a bit nervous-- I almost burst into tears on my way back to my studio today after visiting 3 very shitty flats in Shoreditch and then getting very confused/lost on the tube because the line that goes by my studio is closed so I had to go in a circle to get back-- because I thought it would only take me a few days to find something, and now I feel like I shouldn't be going on this trip, I should be staying in London to look for somewhere permanent to live. I'm checking in to see if I can stay in the studio I'm in now for longer, since it's much cheaper than staying in a hotel, but I really don't feel like wasting more money staying here! It's essentially a closet, it's the tiniest fucking studio I've ever seen in my life, and not only only is it overpriced but it honestly makes me claustrophobic.
And it's equally frustrating coming home to an empty house after a long rough day... god I miss all my friends back home so much! My mom and my bff have been wonderful sending me messages and talking to me via Facebook, but I still miss having people to go out for drinks with and hangout... and I haven't even enjoyed the city at all, honestly! Everyday I've either slept in too late because of jet lag or I've run around looking at flats or I was sitting in my studio looking for flats or researching clubs (if I get hired next week at the club I auditioned at last night that will def lift my spirits though!). I'm dying to go shopping but I'm too scared to spend money.
Kudos to you, Audrey! Don't give up, you ll find something nice! Maybe getting hired first would help you out as girls in your new club might recommend some flats or even know somebody who s renting, dont be too shy to ask.
I've started to read your thread cause I m planing to move to Paris next year and felt the same way - I can't afford to rent the whole appartement alone and I dont want to live in a closet next to the dumpster, plus I understand what you mean about coming to an empty home. So having rommates would be great. But I m a webcam model and not sure on how can I bring it up, esp to total strangers. Plus I cant even say Im working somewhere as I d be stuck home most of the time. But I think at some point its important to tell the truth as you probably are going to live there for some time and it just doesnt worth it sneaking around and liying all the time. Thats why Im thinking actually that with some luck on this forum (and maybe on couple of others) I might find a roommate who does the same job. That would be so damn easy!
Have you tried to look for local strip forums? Maybe you can put an ad there? I know its a wild try, but who doesnt dare...
Haha! That so reminds me parisian closets that they call studios!

^Well I got hired at my first choice club... I was very lucky from what I've read it's very difficult to get in there, so I'm glad they picked me. I haven't worked for almost three weeks now so I miss being at work, it's throwing me all out of sorts and making me extremely anxcious about money.
I don't know, if I was to meet some very together stripper I would consider living with another dancer, but most of the girls I've lived with other the years have been crazy and unreliable amf I can't deal with that. I don't know why I can't meet more girls at work that are like the ones on SW!
I have 4 viewings lined up as of present so keeping my fingers crossed!

^^^ hang in there ! There's actually a 'bright side' in that you'll have some idea of your expected club earnings potential before you commit to an apartment rental / lease amount.

OMG I AM SO FUCKING CREEPED OUT RIGHT NOW!
So I needed to do some laundry, just underwear-- about 20 pairs of underwear. I had some trash so I brought my underwear, trash, coins and detergent downstairs. I threw the trash away and went to the laundry machine but it was a lot more than I thought it would be, so I just put my detergent and laundry down (it was in a clear plastic bag) and ran back upstairs to get more money.
This took me literally under 3 minutes to do... but when I came back my underwear was gone. I didn't see anyone when I went upstairs and when I walked back to my room I didn't see anyone either. The fact that it happened in such a short time makes me feel like someone is watching me! Or there's some perverted person obsessed with underwear in my building. It's a locked building so it had to be someone here, so gross!
Another reason I need to find a flat ASAP!

I found a flat guys! So relieved, that took WAY longer than I thought it would (I thought it would take 2 weeks it took 4). It's in Camden Town. I didn't tell them what I did, I didn't tell anyone that I spoke to. I'll be so happy to get out of this building! I think I know who it was who took my underwear, this weird guy told me he can see my window from the front of the building so I think it was him. Very excited to move! And the people I'll be sharing with seem very cool.
when I had a stripper roomie, she was very open with us about what she did
