    Default Lent

In places with a lot of Catholics, is there a "Lent slowdown" from guys giving up clubbing for lent?

Lent coincides with our slow season, but I think it's more the seemingly endless winter, coupled with tax season and post holiday credit card statements, that cause the slowdown. I can't imagine there would even be a strip club in a city that had a truly large and staunchly Catholic population.

As a Catholic custie, remember that Catholics in general ignore the doctrines of their religion - birth control, premarital sex, and abortion are all precepts pushed forward by the Vatican, and routinely set aside - so I don't think many Catholics avoid SC's because of specific doctrine. Now, I'm speaking from a Canadian perspective, so maybe our US folk are more adherent - but I don't believe that's the case. I seriously doubt any Catholic who goes to SC's would suddenly change that because of Lent. Fish instead of meat, maybe. SC's, no.

I think Lent coincides with a slowdown in travel and tourist $ - at least, our businesses & families don't travel much (except for March break, and really that's only college kids who most can't afford big $ spending, and families, which obviously doesn't really add SC income to most cities). I agree with Shanna that the time of year is more likely to be the reason for the slowdown.

Frankly, if I had to spend 2-3 hours for Saturday night Vigil on Easter Saturday, I'd be more inclined to spend $ to unwind.

Here's the thing though and while the church opposes things like premarital sex, one would hope someone that devout wasn't getting sex in clubs anyway. However the church is very liberal when it come to drinking so customers who go to drink are another story. Interesting to also note that many of the towns that had a large Catholic population also had a mafia group who often ran the clubs and most mafia are Catholic (though not very good ones, obviously).

Honestly I don't know it makes a difference since I danced in areas where Lent (at least the beginning weeks)was in Winter and even our Spring time can be iffy and these are generally slower times.

I'm Catholic (but not religious), and live in a predominantly Catholic city. I've never noticed a Lenten slump, nor have I ever been turned down because someone was "giving up VIP rooms for Lent."

LOL. Most of the northeastern US is packed full of Catholics of the Irish, Italian and Latino varieties, but, with the notable exception of Boston proper, clubs have thrived in the northeast (NYC, Philadelphia, NJ, CT, RI, etc.) as much as almost anywhere. Indeed, until recent crackdowns, Providence (RI) clubs were pretty wide open in terms of special services and RI has long been the most Catholic state in the U.S.

The term "Sunday Christian" tends to be a very apt description of many Catholics (myself included), who on the whole tend to be fairly pragmatic IME. Southern Baptists, Mormons and certain other Christian denominations tend to be much more vocal in their opposition to strip clubs. This is in no way an attempt to denigrate any religious group, but rather just my dispassionate observations with respect to regional influences on clubs.

I guess, under Catholic belief, giving or getting a lap dance (without orgasm) is less of a sin than masturbating (with orgasm). (Evary sperm is needed, in your neighborhood).

Maybe the strip clubs will be full of guys who gave up jerking off for Lent.

I have been to Brazil (Rio) a couple of times during lent and I saw no slow down in the brothels or Help Disco (R.I.P.), Brazil has the highest Catholic population.

I have not been to Brazil but I know about 20 Brazilian girls dancing in the US and several escorts as well. None of them take time of for lent. Quite a few of them take Good Friday and Easter Sunday off but that's about it...

I think it is pretty much safe to assume that most SC patrons are not following Catholic doctrine and most practicing Catholics are not patronizing SCs

Nope lent does not affect anything. It's the crappy winter we have been having.

For all the strict rules of the Catholic Church, there is also confession/reconciliation offered twice a week. On the occasions I've gone, I've had to wait in a long line over an hour to confess my long list of peccadillos to the parish priest, and receive the sacrament of reconciliation. So, its safe to assume that most Catholics commit sins just as much as atheists. Jesus Christ rolled with plenty of sinners and had harsh words for self-righteous and judgmental people. Faith, kindness, humility and forgiveness is more important than legalistic adherence to rules.

So, jack, this means it is easier to ask for forgiveness than to get permission for those "peccadillos".....

I am not particularly religious myself but it was made clear to me in my 12 years of catholic education that the only way you get forgiven for your sins is if you are truly sorry for having committed them and intend to avoid re-committing them. There is no carte blanche to do what you want every week and figure on having it wiped clean every time you go to confession.

^ Here is how it works:

    Confessional Booth:

Me: I spent 3 hours at the stripclub last night and I got many lap dances and I lusted for the gorgeous dancer, Candy, that danced on my lap and rubbed her beautiful and bouncy boobies on my face.

Priest: Are you repentant for this sin and will you try to avoid ever walking into a strip club again?

Me: I wish I was repentant, but I cannot truly say I am. I had a great time and plan to go back next week to see Candy again.

Priest: You cannot be forgiven for a sin that you are not sorry for and intend to repeat.

Me: Well then, let me change my confession... I confess for the sin of not being repentant for going to the club to see Candy, and I am truly sorry that I am not truly sorry for lusting for Candy and for planning to see her again next week.

I'm sure God has a sense of humor. Its a lap dance, not a homicide.
