Default where to practice on the pole?

I love stage dancing, I know it's becoming sort of obsolete and there's not much money making in it, but I just love it, it's honestly my favorite part of my job (besides making tons of money).

But I feel like I'm stuck in a rut and I'm not coming up with new moves. The only time I get to just practice is when my club was slow. I watch youtube videos but it's really hard for me to watch them and then try to remember what they said when I'm at work...

Will studios let you come in and just use the facilities? I would be down to do a one-on-one with someone is I could choose what I want to learn, but I'm not really interested in just taking a general pole dancing. Honestly I just want to have a pole and a computer so I can you-tube! (and my apartment is too small for a pole)

Many studios around here offer drop in hours where anyone can pay a few bucks to pop in and play on the poles as they wish. I don't think that's particularly uncommon since many class attendees would also want to practice outside of the hour or so a week. Depending on the wifi situation, you could probably even bring your laptop and learn from videos there, or at least download them if there's no wifi. Your best bet is to just call a few nearby studios and ask. Many also offer private classes, so that's also often an option.

Or buy a pressure mount pole for your apartment. That's what I did. I live in a tiny NYC apartment and somehow rearranged everything to have a tolerable amount of space to work with. I have the 45 mm chrome XPole.

hey that's the same exact pole I have! All of the places I've lived have been really small and I've had to do rearranging to fit the pole too. It was a sacrifice between having a more functional room and having the pole, but the pole was worth it. As far as studios go, all of the cities I lived in required you to join the studio w a membership before you could come in to the "open pole" classes which kinda sucked because like you, I just wanted to do my own thing without taking a class. I prefer the full length mirrors that cover the walls of the studios... I dont have that at home even though I have a pole. And frankly its sometimes just boring and uninspirational to practice at home. If you can find a studio that allows you to go to open pole w/o joining their reg. classes that's be perfect though

I have not space in my flat for a pole and when I move to a bigger place I'll be sharing with someone and I don't want to disclose that I'm a stripper and that would sort of give it away! lol.

I found a studio in Camden where I can buy an hour of solo practice time on the pole for 9 pounds which is pretty good, free would be better but I haven't found anywhere that will just let me come in and practice for free. So I'm going to start buying hours so I can come in and practice, hopefully they will let me bring my laptop with me and if not I guess I can just use my phone.

I bought a couple private lessons as well just because I feel like I could use some help with a couple moves... I am DYING to learn how to do these two moves (and I'm afraid I might not have the arm strength to do the second so I def want a spotter!):

I've been trying to teach myself to do this move for almost two months now and I am nowhere near mastering it, I think it's one of the most beautiful and graceful spins I've seen! This girl at my old club could do it and I begged her to go through it with me but she refused because she said it was her 'signature move.'

I don't know why it's so important to me to be able to do pole work, no one does it at my club and the customers could def care less but I'm obsessed with it! lol.

That would be nice but good luck finding a pole studio that will let you use their stuff for free!

^This is why I love spin mode. Did you check to make sure the studio you found has spinning poles? I've visited a few studios and they were all stationary. A lot of polers poo-poo spinning poles because it's "cheating" but the fact is you just can't do such beautiful elaborate spins with a stationary. Actually, I just find everything on a spinning pole more beautiful.

Can you do an Angel Spin? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksHAT-lCVK8

It's not as pretty but it helped ease me into the feeling of "OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD MY TORSO IS IN FRONT OF THE POLE I SHOULD BE FALLING BUT I'M NOT WHAT IS THIS"

Extended butterfly is one of my biggest pole dreams, but also one of my most distant. So pretty...

Spin mode is so pretty, but it can also be much harder since you are fighting centrifocal(sp?) force along w/ whatever else you are doing. I have nvr understood how spin mode gets written off as 'so easy it's like cheating!'

I think it is the perception that the spinning pole makes the spinning part of the trick easier. Lots of people don't factor in the physics involved.

Some once told me that when people watch air plane display teams most of the moves that look to be the hardest are some of the easiest on the pilots and the ones that seem simple are brutal on the pilots.

In someways it's kind of the same with pole tricks, it's all physics right?

    ^ Yes, you're right!

To the OP: Here in LA, there is only one studio that I know of that will let you book "open pole" without joining their studio. Unless it's competition season which is late winter into spring and fall into early winter. About a month before the competitions, a handful of studios offer open pole classes for a fair price. I booked a few classes at one studio who was charging only $10 for 2 hours of pole practice time. I actually had the studio to myself one day!

But for free?? I don't think that will happen anywhere.

Btw, the extended butterfly is much easier than it looks because you are still really close to the pole. Good luck with your lessons!

hey-- on the topic of poles in apartments-- anyone have recommendations for a pressure mounted spinning pole that could mount to a vaulted ceiling? Not even sure if that's possible. it's just the best space is vaulted and otherwise I'd have to deal with light fixtures being in the way.

Is it an X-Pole? I think you can mount them on to almost anything surface. Especially the new ones.

Sm manufacturers sell vaulted-ceiling adapters, I think X-Pole is one of them.

You can do it without a spinning pole.. the girl at my club could do this exact move and we didn't have a spinning pole. It's probably harder? I dunno but I def saw her do it multiple times on stage and we didn't have a spinning pole...

And I can't do the angel spin either, I didn't see that video it would've been a better one to start learning! I don't know if it's my fear or that I can't get the positioning right it is freaky taking your hands off the pole!

The girl in your club was spinning in a Swan pose without her hands on a static pole??? Or she was on a static pole in that pose but not spinning?

^Spinning on a static pole with her hands in swan pose. I asked her how to do it and she said "use your thigh muscles." She wouldn't tell me any more than that she's kind of a bitch!

But-- I looked at the video again and she definitely didn't spin as many times as DirtyBirdy did... she just went around once (maybe twice?) with her hands/legs in the same position.

To the person who asked about the vaulted ceiling, def. try x-pole like the others said. My first apartment had like 13' vaulted ceilings so all I had to do was buy two additional things (an extension to make the pole longer, and the top part of the pole that attaches to the slanted roof). It cost extra $ than just buying the pole itself, but its worth it to have a longer pole.

She might have been 'twisting' her thigh muscles to move her body around the pole once or twice. I don't see how she could spin normally at all, since the amount of pressure that she needs to put on the pole with her legs to balance her unsupported torso would make too much friction.

I first learned to put my torso in front of the pole by crossing my ankles in front, holding on with just my groin, and then leaning forward to touch my toes. Your body twists a little and it feels funny. It still freaks me out just enough to be exciting. I don't know the name of that move though!

It's been like a month and half since I've seen her do it, so I'm trying to remember exactly how she did it-- she grabbed the top of the pole with her hands and lifted herself up, then she would spin around once with her body in a straight line, and from there go into angel pose.. I'm not sure, it was the exact same position as DirtyBirdy, but definitely not as much spinning. I would love to learn either one of them!

Once you gain good upper body strength & the skill to control it you can sm times throw your body around to look like you are spinning on a static pole. You will not get nearly the amt of rotations but it is all abt focusing your momentum.

I found a studio in London where I can get a membership for 120 pounds a month to take unlimited pole dancing classes, have a private lesson once a week and use their poles during all their studio times (which are 2-4 hours everyday)... so that solves my problem of how to practice! So excited!
