    Default Netflix Recommendations Thread

I didn't see a thread like this, to share good movies found on Netflix (or bad ones to avoid).

I watched Hick tonight. It's a clichéd runaway road movie that has a lot of feel good moments tackled with some really tough ones. But what separates it from every other movie you've seen is how surprisingly well written it is with some great lines and turns. I definitely recommend it.

EDIT: it turns out a lot of critcs hate this move and complain it goes no where, there's no character arc, and no lessons are learned. I think that's why I like it, it comes off as a typical Hollywood fantasy movie, but doesn't end the way you expect.

I liked Rush but Catching Fire, the Hunger Games Sequel was a bust for me. House of Cards is fun.

"Her" was a good film, but it had a very emotional ending. If you like documentaries, I recommend "Zeitgeist". For a great comedy, "The Big Lebowski" is gold. "Hot Tub Time Machine" is a great movie to watch while drinking with your friends. I'm not sure if these are still available for streaming, but I'm pretty sure they are.

was that meant for me? if it was..idk, anything that isn't a really crappy cheap B movie basically. i love classic, slightly hokey 80s/90s movies like the craft, highlander, basic instinct, wish master, fatal attraction, anything steven king, wild things, dumb and dumber, etc. then spooky thriller like silence of the lambs, sixth sense, the exorcist, the possession, insidious, drag me to hell, the ring, etc. then stuff like the matrix and fight club of course hehe. its kind of all over the place.

Banshee Season 1 - pilot is intriguing, 1.02 formulaic but if you can get to 1.03 you will be hooked. One warning - lots of violence. But it's like no other show on TV. Top 4-5 characters are awesome.

Any documentary buffs? Some of my favorites on Netflix:

Blackfish - about the harm posed to orcas by long-term captivity in sea parks.

The Price of Gold - about the evidence connecting an Olympic ice skater to an attack on her biggest rival.

The Woman Who Wasn't There - about a woman who convinced the world that she was a victim of the 9/11 attacks, despite the mounting evidence against her story.

The Elephant in the Living Room - about dangerous exotic animals kept as household pets.

How to Die in Oregon - follows the stories of terminally-ill people seeking physician-assisted suicide.

The House I Live In - about addicts who've received life sentences due to the War on Drugs.

Hot Coffee - about the woman who received a large settlement from McDonald's after spilling boiling coffee on herself (leading to third-degree burns and more than two years of medical treatment) and how the case was spun by the media into an example of "frivolous" lawsuits.

This is an abbreviated list of some of the movies / shows / documentaries I've rated highly on Netflix.

Wild China - gave me an appreciation for China as being more than one giant city spewing fumes. I had no idea that China is so beautiful!

Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking - very well-done short series on the universe

The Life of Mammals - I loooove David Attenborough

How the Universe Works - goes over all sorts of universe features like black holes, wyrms, etc.

The Life of Birds - if you're into birds, check it out. Another David Attenborough series.

Whores' Glory - covers the gritty sides of the sex industry in India, Mexico, and Thailand

Adventureland - great acting, well-written, original story, may make some folks feel nostalgic for their 20s

Water Lilies - a French film about the awkward time between girlhood and womanhood. A very calm movie that you'll either love or won't 'get' at all.

Too Cute - a series to fall asleep to, or to calm you down after anxiety-inducing events (e.g. getting home from a night of work). Comforting and mindless.

    Drinking Buddies - well-acted and well-written; doesn't have a super-predictable plotline. Olivia Wilde!

    180 South - a well-made documentary, fairly calm, about hiking and adventure-seeking

New Girl - very well-written comedy series produced by and starring Zooey Deschanel. About the uncertainty and inherent comedy of life in your 20s and 30s.

The Business of Being Born - an engaging, pro-midwife documentary about how messed up the system is in America for pregnant women.

The Italian Job - a classic action movie starring Charlize Theron

My Summer of Love - an interesting and unpredictable film about a short relationship between two women, starring Emily Blunt

    Stuck in Love - well-written, well-made movie

Doll House - Joss Whedon show

Parenthood - I was hooked after the first episode. A feel-good series about the ups and downs of having a family. Great acting and writing.

Blue Planet - David Attenborough documentary series on oceans

Good Will Hunting - fantastic movie

The L Word - yeah buddy

The Rebound - a surprisingly engaging, well-written, well-acted, and non-formulaic romantic comedy starring Catherine Zeta-Jones

    Brokeback Mountain

    Lost in Translation

The anime show "Hetalia". Is about the countries of the world personified as people. If you're a history buff, this is the show for you. NOT a kiddie show: is rated "MA" because of the language used (lots of cussing) and some nudity.

I also loved "The Billionaire's Tea Party": a big eye opener for those who claim the TP is a grassroots movement founded by average Joes/Janes.

Mo Rocca's "Electoral Dysfunction" is excellent as well.

It has the option for both. I watch it dubbed because I like their English voices better.

I understand Japanese and am a total snob about my anime. I refuse to watch anything subbed so I'm glad there's that option. Lol. Currently watching Attack on Titan.

I don't watch that many movies, but shows I love on Netflix are--
(I love dramas and I especially love dramas that focus on detective/serial killers, but only ones that focus on the same killer for a whole season and have good writing/acting)

The Tudors- follows Henry VIII, a soap-opera-period-drama

Mad Men- my favorite show of all time

The Killing- Seatle detective show but follows one death/serial killer every season, amazing writing and acting

The Walking Dead- I think we all know this show

Top of the Lake- BBC mini-series, New Zealand-based murder, again amazing writing and acting

Sherlock- modern Sherlock Holmes if you're British you know it!

The Fall- BBC detective show, follows a detective hunting a serial killer in Ireland, again amazing writing and acting

    The Borgias-- another soap-opera-period-piece

Homeland- just watched two seasons back to back, CIA drama

I'm jealous of those of you in America.. the British version of Netflix is SUPER limited. All these great shows I used to watch on American netflix are no longer available!

Did you try your US account? I'm not sure how it works in England, but when I was in Finland a few months ago I was able to log into my US account. My techie friends over there said it had something to do with using a US credit card & IP address.

I came across a movie called "Blackbird" on Netflix last night... it kind of tripped me out so I'm watching it again. I don't want to say anything else about it but it's worth a watch.

As someone on here recommend to me get HOLA unblocker, then you can watch the American site, I would die just watching the UK version, I use it to watch USA MTV and VH1 too.

I've been watching House of Cards, primarily because they did a very good job of dubbing it into Spanish. It's not distracting at all, and I can put on English subtitles if I'm starting to get lost. I recommend it to anyone trying to improve his or her Spanish language skills. I've heard that Netflix dubbed their other original series well, too, but so far HoC is the only one I've watched.
