Default SF police plan to tweet photos of recently-arrested johns.

    Full article here. Excerpt:

According to KTVU, Richmond PD plans to "publicly shame" alleged customers of sex workers by posting photos of men arrested in prostitution stings to Facebook and Twitter. "We all know when something is put on social media, it spreads like wildfire," Richmond PD Sgt. Nicole Abetkov told KTVU.

"Social media is the new wave of the future of police departments all over. And sometimes, that can get the word out a lot quicker," she said.

Abetkov points out to KTVU that once someone is arrested, their booking photo becomes public record, so "we don't see ourselves holding back" from sharing those photos on social media, even though these men might not ever be convicted of any crime.

They are also planning to send letters to the registered owners of cars frequently spotted in "high prostitution areas."

Well even though I think this is probably pretty bad, I still feel that johns should be outed just as much as the women. Surely neither should be outed but I have never liked the attitude that it's ok to out the women which usually results in harassment and abuse yet the men are always kept private. Honestly from what I hear this is just another way to rake in money. I'm pretty sure they're going to give some of the Johns a financial choice of being anonymous.

I recall speaking to a guy on SA telling me about a friend of his that was always trying to find the cheapest woman out there. He waited until she sounded desperate and gave him a steal of something like $60. When the guy got there off he went into handcuffs. After court fees he probably spent upwards around 6k+. Funny how he thought he was getting over on some young woman going through hard times and instead it costed him over 100 times what he intended to pay her. Had he stopped being cheap and greedy he could have saved his name from appearing on google.

Speculatively speaking, this is bad for dancers and escorts, but good for camgirls. Lots of 'professional' and 'business' guys are heavily dependent on maintaining a good reputation. Posting of personal data and photos by LE at the point an unproven accusation is lodged / arrest is made is likely to create new fears for certain club customers, certain escort agency customers, etc. that a ( bogus ) bust could heavily impact their reputations thus future careers / business prospects.

I'm pretty sure they're going to give some of the Johns a financial choice of being anonymous.
Probably so. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see a busted dancer-like situation used by LE where busted guys will be offered a zero jail time zero publicity but heavy fine plea bargain. Refusal to accept that plea bargain would immediately subject them to 'public shaming' ... that can't be undone if they are eventually found to be innocent.

This is opening a door to defamation lawsuits if they're posting this stuff post-arrest and not post-conviction...

unfortunately, with present legal doctrine in place that arrest particulars are part of the 'public record', such lawsuits will go nowhere. Changing this would force a ban on all publication of arrest info in all news media ... something which would arguably be contrary to the 'public's right to know'. Slippery Slope 101

Admittedly, litigation in the aftermath of the Duke Lacrosse case, the Dominic Strauss Khan case, etc. has established some precedent that a private citizen 'false accuser' can be sued for damages by the 'falsely accused' party. However, LE is exempt from such civil suits.

Yeah I am tired of seeing these women outed while the men get off (no pun)scot free.

Reminds me of a situation that happened at a club I worked at. I had quit because the money wasn't there but right after they got busted. They were busted for things that weren't prostitution but going nude without permission and things like that. Anyway the paper published the first and last name of every dancer there. That to me was wrong and I am glad I quit the week before. The case was dropped incidentally but the dancers had all their info out there.

In today's 'internet is forever' age, this is indeed a new consideration for exotic dancers. Being (bogusly) busted will result in the dancer's real name etc. being published in local news police blotters etc. ... which also forever creates a searchable link to an online newspaper page that may haunt the (bogusly) busted dancer in the future ( background checks etc.) even if she is found innocent of the charges.

^things like that. Arrest records being public is one thing; putting the arrest info across social media for the express purpose of shaming them is the DEFINITION of defamation. And in Kellydancer's example - the case was DROPPED? Yeah - I'd get a class-action going there. Strippers work under stage names for a reason.

^^^ I agree with your sentiments entirely.

However, it remains to be seen whether or not strippers have any 'legal right' to work anonymously / under stage names.

I know in one jurisdiction that local gov't instituted dancer's licenses ... with an additional requirement that said dancer's license had to be displayed while working. This obviously led to a situation where any club customer who wanted to look could see the dancer's real name, real address etc. as printed on the license she was wearing around her ankle. The local authorities agreed to drop the additional requirement that dancer's licenses had to be displayed while working ... but I don't think that they were legally required to drop the requirement.

The arrest is a public record. Those have been published for years. Little chance of stating a cause of action for publishing an arrest.

Undercover officers work for public agencies using public funds. So I guess publishing a list of their real names and pictures is fine, too. Oh - that would ENDANGER THEM, you say?! They're in a business where people might come after them, you say? OOOHHhh, I get it - they work in a profession where their privacy is paramount to their safety. Well. Good thing that's not the case with adult workers. It all makes sense, now.

Oh, man. It's only sex for pleasure. Mutually agreed-on.

It isn't robbery, drug manufacturing, assault, killing, or even white-collar crime.

I like the Canadian laws that way, if it isn't public, it's legal.

Further it would be safer and less expensive. And it does take some basic skills, marketing among them. And I would probably buy into it too.

But religion (and jealousy) rears it's dirty head and it isnt at all. Too durned much religion in the USA, and that is why we are going down the tubes.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

I hear you ! You can add to your list the ability of SF cops to carry a pistol for self-defense reasons while 'civilians' cannot, and a host of other former 'rights' that American 'civilians' have let slip away. Slippery Slope 102

With the abundance of underage girls being forced into prostitution has increased. Read somewhere, a girl whether she be a run away from the U.S. or sold into it from another country makes a pimp about $250,000..

One way to help stop the sex traffic that has increased is to do this.. It is a matter of public information, NOW men can feel the stigma & judgement that females who are sex workers have dealt with for centuries.

What an adult female & male do is fine by me, but underage sex traffic & sex slaves must be ended. Perhaps this will help.

I'm sure it is for most. But occasionally a girl gets pleasure from an encounter with a favorite client. If I were involved, this is what I would wish to be, along with many (or at least some) of the male members on SW.

These cops are absolute lowlifes. It's bad enough that they kidnap people and lock them in cages for consensual sex, but now they want to terrorize them with slander on a global scale?

Why don't these guys make use of taxpayer funds to go catch some ACTUAL criminals?
