Question Big Brothers Big Sisters and being a dancer

I'm interested in becoming an influential and supportive part of a young girl's life, because I feel that I have a lot of love, compassion, and positive insight to share with people, but I'm not ready for my own kids. BBBS is something I want to commit to very badly once I settle down next year, however I'm concerned that my employment background may be an issue, as I would be working with a child, and people generally regard strippers as not kid-friendly.
I have no criminal record, and would by all means pass a drug test, but I don't know what the extent of their check is, and if they'd be looking at my employers (aaaalllll stripclubs baby). Does anyone have any insight into this?
I'm sure the interview in general would go well. People tend to be very eager about me before they find out what I do for a living. Darnit.

Omg, I literally just finished the home interview for BBBS a few hours ago!

I can't speak to working with the organization as a dancer, I avoided the issue entirely by just not mentioning it since I've always had a regular vanilla job and income. The case manager I talked to was really cool though and they have such a long wait list I can't imagine they'd turn away a prospective volunteer with a legal income. Would you want to get involved not as Big but maybe with fundraising before settling down next year? That way you'd get an "in" with the organization with a very minimal time commitment and you could have at least one reference from a staff member. The staff know that not EVERYTHING in your apartment is going to be "kid friendly" (like, porn is healthy/normal/fine for an adult but not for a kid). Their main thing is just to be careful around the kid and not leave anything out that they shouldn't find. So I think to you a case manager would just say make sure your dancer things are in the closet/car/where ever else a kid wouldn't find it and ask questions.

Finding a parent who would OK a Big who is a dancer I'm not sure about...probably depends on your area? And again there's such a long waiting list. I think lying about it and then having someone involved in the organization see you as a dancer (instead of a waitress) would be worse.

For better or worse, BBBS and other ( directly or indirectly gov't funded ) child social services programs are about as high up as you can get on the 'public trust' ladder ... arguably even higher than teachers or nurses. Any 'whiff' of adult industry background will disqualify you. Since the ( gov't funded ) agency is responsible for vetting the people they are going to allow to be in close, unsupervised contact with 'other peoples' children, the background check is likely to be rather thorough.

And if you make it past the background check - and wind up actually working as a Big Sister - and are THEN outed as a ( former or worse, current ) 'stripper', gov't pressure may result in the agency attempting to make an 'example' of you to cover their own a$$es re allowing you to work as a Big Sister in the first place.

If you don't have a paper trail of 'respectable' vanilla job work history, questions will definitely be asked regarding how you are able to support yourself. This will almost certainly place you in a position of telling the truth and being rejected, or lying to be accepted but placing yourself at major future risk if you are eventually 'outed' and they choose to make an 'example' of you. Take a minute to consider how this might be spun by the agency in a worst case scenario ... 'stripper' XYZ lies to ( gov't funded ) agency in order to gain unsupervised 1 on 1 access to underage girls.

Please understand that I'm not saying that this WILL happen ... only that it COULD happen ! But if it DID happen, the potential for having your own life messed up due to ( bogus ) charges and resulting bad publicity is something to consider. And, thanks to internet searches, even if you are found to have done absolutely nothing wrong, the publication of ( bogus ) charges having been made against you in local news media's web pages will continue to 'live forever'.

I don't know anything about this agency but they are probably going to be very stringent about making sure you're suitable to be around kids...I mean they're going to be worried about the safety of the kids and making sure they're not letting them be with some weirdo (NOT saying you're a weirdo I just imagine the interview process is pretty extensive) and unfortunately in this day and age stripping is not generally culturally smiled upon! I can't imagine that the question of employment isn't going to come up, so you could say you're in-between jobs right now or in school and you have some free time and just want to volunteer, but I wouldn't be surprised if they want your job history or to even call upon references of past employers...

I volunteered at an organization a few years ago that was in LA, can't remember the name but it was a center where kids went after school, mostly middle-school aged kids and it was specifically for creative writing which was why I wanted to volunteer. Kids would come and get help with their homework and then they would take story-telling classes and work on writing short-stories or plays or longer works or whatever, it was really cool, most of the kids were from low-income families and had no one to take care of them after school so they would have just been home alone. I honestly don't think they even did a background check because at the time I was technically on probation from my DUI (lasted 3 fucking years) and I think that would have popped up if they did. Because it was at a center where you weren't alone with the kids they were a lot more lenient about who they let in and definitely didn't ask me anything at all about my employment history, maybe you could do something like that instead? Or do that for a while and then ask them to recommend you to this organization?
