    Question Hot Rollers

Do you have a brand you love? Success stories to share? How many rollers would you recommend for a full head of long hair?

Basically, I'm sick of battling curling irons and hair products. With my poor coordination and fine + long hair type, the curls always uncurl quickly and leave me with no volume on top. I'm going for beachy, Victoria's-Secret-like waves that don't fall out after 5 minutes and don't require massive amounts of sticky hairspray to keep in place. I'm finally caving in and buying this hairspray, too, after hearing such great things about it.

There are other threads on this topic, but they're all 3+ years old.

I have a set of Paul Mitchell ones that I love. It definitely gives my hair VS model type waves, which is really pretty for work especially.
Before I put them in I spray Aquage "Beyond Shine" heat protectant spray on my hair. Then I roll up the curlers and lightly spray Moroccan Oil Light Hairspray over them. Then when I take the curlers out once they've cooled off I flip my head upside down and then again use the Moroccan Oil Light Hairspray.

I also have long, straight hair and in general have never liked using products or hairspray, but the Moroccan Oil one I use is fantastic . It's not sticky at ALL, smells really pretty and holds nicely!

Excuse the noob but I'd like to hear more about using hot rollers. I've never used rollers hot or otherwise! How long do you leave them in for? How many to cover long thick hair?

I usually leave mine in for 10-15 minutes. You just put them in while they're hot, pin them up so they stay, and can do your makeup or something while they are cooling off.
My hair is like an inch away from by butt and I use 8-10 curlers for my hair. You can create different looks depending on how many you use.

    I'm thinking of buying these
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Revlon-9033U.../dp/B005M4ZP5O

I saw a girl on YouTube using them and the result was good. Reviews pretty good and price is excellent.
Your choice seems interesting in the way it works.its good you can buy extra rollers if you need them and its cheap! Only problem is lack of warranty. Can you get one elsewhere? If mine died I'd just buy another.

I bought babyliss ceramic rollers for £20 off eBay brand new. They had the best reviews but amazon wanted £55. Your titanium ones look even better. Can't wait to try them out!

I'm trying to decide between the Babyliss ceramic ones and the Babyliss titanium ones... The price difference is ~$30...

Oooh! I've tried both of these!

I don't see much difference between the titanium and the ceramic, TBH. I think your decision is more about being between multiple roller sizes and number of rollers.

My hair is thick-stranded/thinly distributed and layered, and the longest just hit my bra strap across the back. I'd choose the ceramic option just because of the increased number of curlers and size options: I like using the large ones across the back and medium ones around my face.

Based on your description of your hair as long and fine, if you want slight wave and body, save your money and get the 12. I don't know if you want the extreme Victoria's Secret look of curling away from the face around the chin, but if you do want "VS" curls you'll need to graduate them closer and tighter towards your face, so get the 30 and realize you might not use the 6 smallest ones. At 3.53/roller for 12 and 3.08/roller with the 30 (assuming you're not using the 6 smallest, so 24/30 of them), and free shipping on both, with fine hair I'd definitely vote for buying and having options.

Either way, make sure you let them cool COMPLETELY before you take them out. For mine it takes between 20 and 25 minutes until they're totally cold, but they feel warm after 10 minutes. I usually do my make-up in the meantime.

PS. Buy different clips, no matter which you choose - they both suck!
Toronto-based, very rough draft, constantly asking for input!

You are a GODDESS!! Thank you so much!!!

For VS curls, do you use the smaller curlers on top of your head? I'm hair-tarded.

Also, what hairspray do you use? I'm looking for a non-crunchy hairspray with hold...

I air-dry my hair (as much as possible, once every two or three weeks I cave to blowdrying) and split it down the middle part into two pigtails. I section it vertically from crown to nape from there, and use the smaller-medium ones from my ear forward. On both sides, I curl them away from my face (so opposite on either side and towards the middle part on the back of my head). It took me forever watching Youtube tutorials an eventually asking my hair stylist to get it right! My problem was that everywhere said to do it in horizontal layers instead of vertical ones, so maybe try that before you spend any money?

It worked way more nicely on my thin hair, and I think I have the exact hair you're trying to emulate. I also learned I have to use smaller curlers than I thought, because my hair will just naturally relax a little.

I'm a fan of the Moroccan oil spray SwanPrincess mentioned earlier. I let everything cool completely before I spray it, comb it out, and flip my head over for a quick re-spray. It smells nice, sprays finely and evenly, is relatively affordable and doesn't stick. I used to to very sticky, heavy hairspray, but this one is light and easy. Since I've realized how important it is to leave your hair in those stupid, tight curls until 20m later and how to section my hair I haven't needed anything more.

I love my hair right now! It curls so nicely - something like this, but a little longer.

I really like the fuzziness of the con air ones. You always have to let them cool for best results.

Hot sticks might be an option: http://www.amazon.com/Babyliss-Nano-...rds=hot+sticks
    Youtube video with results: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPKubW0HOqQ

Velcro rollers could work, too (I think Sally Beauty sells these).

Hot rollers may still be a good option, as even the larger rollers aren't that huge, generally. This set only goes up to large: http://www.amazon.com/Conair-0741081...6918991&sr=8-1 You also might be able to buy a hot roller system and then just buy extra small rollers.

-A product like that doesn't create any volume. So if you have longer hair with weight to it, your hair will end up with a curl but no volume.

-The amazing thing about hot rollers is that you put them on your hair hot and don't take them out until they're cold. The heat relaxes the proteins in the hair and forms them into a curl; waiting until the curlers are cold ensures that the proteins lock into the curled shape you want. That's why curling irons are so frustrating. They heat the hair up and curl the strands, but there's nothing to support the hair in a curled position while the curls cool and 'freeze' into place. The hair is still warm and flexible, so the curl immediately starts to relax out. So you end up relying on hairspray (which weighs the hair down further) to try to lock in your style.

I'm a hot roller junkie, pure and proud. My hair is thin, stick straight, and all but laughs in the face of curling irons. I mean, really, I've watched girls just go 'clamp, twirl, drop, repeat' 12 times around their hair, toss on some spray for 3 seconds, and still have the VS loose, sexy curls come morning. One of those lucky bitches is my roommate--they're real human beings people, I swear. Hot rollers are the only thing to work on my hair.

I'm using a set by Remington (H9096) right now. I picked it up online for $25 and it comes with 20 rollers (8 medium/1", 12 large/1.5"). My stepmother loved it so much that I bought her a set from Walmart with a 3 year warranty after her beloved Caruso rollers (brand shown in OP's first post) died on what may well have been their 15th anniversary (also an excellent brand, btw).

A couple of important things I've learned about rollers for girls with FINE, THIN hair, regardless of length (everyone else, I'm out of my depth):

    * Volume will always be a bitch to get; best thing to do is take a 3-4" chunk of hair on the centered on the top of your head ("crown" area) and back roll your largest rollers there tightly to get some body.

    * Location, location, location: I personally curl hair away from my face and alternate the size of the rollers along sizes/back of my head (but only large on top). Some girls like to use only large in back and smaller in the front for tighter curls up close. It's person dependent, so play around with vertical vs. horizontal roller placement, roller size, hair part, time, etc. to get what you like.

    * Hairspray and heat protector are your new best friends. I run a good dose of protector through and lightly spray with hairspray before even parting the hair for rollers. The heat will set the hairspray and help hold more curl, so less hairspray at the end and no 'crunchy' feeling. Because EW!

    * Hairspray is just a fact of life, part deux: when you take your rollers out, flip your head over gently and hand toss your curls, then spray lightly; flip head up and repeat. Tease a bit with fingers at the crown to get more volume.

    * Rollers work best on hair that isn't freshly washed, much like every other styling technique in existence since the dawn of time. I wash my hair at night and let it air dry until morning, which gives much better hold to my curls.

    * How you remove curlers almost matters more than how you insert them. Let them more or less 'drop' out of your hair with minimal tugging on the roller, as this will prevent straightening that curl you worked so hard to get.

    * My curls look better after they've had 30 minutes to 'fall' into place, so you can do the final round of light spraying then if you think they're too big/tight/etc right off the rollers.

    * Hot rollers are a crap shoot. No, seriously. When you use a wand, you control the curl perfectly. Hot rollers have a lot of wiggle room, so while your curls will always be generous and lovely, they'll never look the same day to day. Again, finger comb your curls to fix things and accept bobby pins when needed.

    <3 and good luck!
