    Default bookkeeping software?

So filing taxes was a night mare because I cammed for a few sites and an the pay to tweet and then some money from like amazon and youtube affiliate stuff and I forgot one and had to amend which is horrible. I want to keep better track of it all. I am looking for a easy to learn bookkeeping software to either download or use online. Im hoping not to pay more than like 75$ but it seems some are monthly. There are just so many choices I am a bit overwhelmed. Anyone have any good recommendations?

I just print of my bank statements, because of the deposit exchange rate I get from SM. Anything online usually wants a monthly fee, so your best best is to get a software that is on your computer, some are able to use excel just fine. for a temp solution you could use google drive excel.

A basic version of quicken might work.

A fellow SW model recommended an app called Toshl. It's a very basic, starter app but it does exactly what I want it to do: keep track of income only. It's $20/year. You can use it on your phone & you can use it on your computer (online). You can see graphs, you can print income by quarters to make your estimated payments. It's not designed to be used the way I'm using it though.

This is how I use it:
Expenses: To keep track of what I make in a month (for my own benefit), I enter all info into the "Expenses" section.

Income: To keep track of payments for the government, I enter all of my actual payments from sites into the "Income" section. I date each entry with the date I received each payment. That makes it so much easier to do quarterly taxes without paying on income from the wrong quarter.

For example: A customer sends me a $100 payment on March 30th. I enter that into the Expenses section for March. When the payment clears my account on April 2nd, I enter it into April Income. When all is said & done, "Expenses" is just for me to track what I make in any given month. "Income" is what I report to the government (dates for when I received the money, not when I earned it).

If you're not concerned about tracking your income for your own benefit, but just what to report to the government, then you could actually use the "Expenses" section to track your business expenses. It has a "tag" feature that would allow you to sort all expenses into easily-managed categories.

This might not be the kind of program you're looking for, but it worked for me.

I use excel exclusively, but I'm also a college student, so excel is basically something I have a degree in. I have a 'daily' excel where I keep track of my money for the Spring/Summer Hustle Challenge going on here. I have the date, then a column for each of my regular eggs ('SM,' 'Arousr,' 'Vanilla,' and 'Other' for catch all). The next column sums the values for each day, then the next keeps a running sum of that day plus all of my previous days (since I'm doing the challenge). I also have one column for my minimum goal and another for my high goal, which tells me the percentage of the way I am to complete. It's really nice if you know how to make basic features.

For bookkeeping I've done something similar. Since I'm audit-fearing and the state I live in regularly audits businesses for statistical purposes every four years or so (and, yes, I am registered as a business because my state said I have to), I take a screenshot of my session earnings. On SM, for example, I screenshot my weekly earnings at the end of each week and save that shot. I also save my individual 'details' option so I have the breakdown of my earnings. These all go in a folder on Google Docs to stay safe (don't wanna print if I don't have too--so many trees I'd kill). Arousr sends me my transactions list in an excel document each time I cash in and get the check sent to my bank, so I save that document as well.

For bookkeeping, I take half an hour each weekend (sometimes much less) to input my daily income from the past week into a master excel sheet. I set it up just like a checkbook register, with a column for 'date,' 'description' where I put the company/private skype/etc, 'gain,' 'loss/deduction,' and then running total. At the end of each month, I make a quick list at the bottom by payer, so I'll have total from SM, then total from Arousr, then total from my PT job. I make a new one for each month and also keep them uploaded to Google Docs. They take me maybe an hour per month to do for everything I've listed out and it'll make my life really easy come tax season.

I'm old skool. I write things down in an accounting ledger that was $15 at Office Max.

I also use a system similar to Issabelle. I have been using Excel spreadsheets for a couple years. The only thing I was having trouble with was a quick-reference total for when income was earned vs when it was paid. It gets so confusing when some sites pay out weekly, others pay out monthly, some customers pay me directly, and then some sites I don't reach payout on every month. Ugh. So many numbers.

But Excel, when done well, can be an excellent tool. And you can also create graphs from the numbers.

I have a sticky note app open on my desktop for the issue of pending payments and I keep a daily log of my earnings from each source in a separate excel sheet. My bookkeeping excel is only for money I have physically deposited in my bank account via paypal/check/etc. It's nice that way because I know what paychecks to expect on what date based on the sticky note and I have my total day-to-day earnings to track my hard and soft goals separately. Keeps the madness at bay. Since I don't even usually do my taxes until late-January or early-February, I don't need to worry too much about having all of the checks from December physically deposited by then.

I use KMyMoney, which works on Linux and Windows. I track my income and expanses with it. There is a forecast, so I can see how much money I need next months. I can't really explain it because I lack the vocabulary but I like it very much. Just look at their Sourceforge page.
