    Default Computer repairshop privacy?

I'm having a major issue with my laptop and need to have charger port repaired. I'm going to need to take it to a repairshop in town but am concerned about my privacy. Besides locking my picture and video files and deleting my browsing history, is there anything I should/can do to protect myself from snoopy repairman find things on my computer? Thanks!

If they can access your hard drive those photos can be view-able. Also, we're talking repairmen here, if they want to get into those files, they can but I'm pretty sure it's illegal. I would back up everything on an external drive which is something you should do anyway because they might have to wipe out your hard drive completely and delete any surface files they can just click on.

Geek that I am I do outsource IT work once in a while. kortneykay is right on about backing up. What I would do is take all pics, photos, videos and any private files and copy them to an external drive, usb thumb drive etc. Then I'd delete those files from HD on laptop. Most IT workers in my experience are professional and don't poke around or invade someone's privacy. If they uncover something embarrassing during the course of repair they treat it as your doctor would and ignore it. Good Luck.

Is there anyone that can come to you to fix it? I remembered that I still had a card from a guy I'd met at a training session a few years ago, and he came round to fix my laptop. At least you can see what they're doing then.

There was a programme in the UK where they watched what computer repairmen did, I don't know how many weren't trustworthy but at 1 place they opened files marked "private" and tried to access the owner's bank account, which was a dummy set up for investigation.

Thanks ladies! I do have some backed up and can do the rest. But I also really like the idea of having someone come to me. Or.... I can just make my boyfriend take it in so he looks like he's obsessed with a camgirl, lol!
