Default cutting out wheat and gluten

ok so i just heard that wheat/gluten causes acne and accelerates skin aging so i'm all set with that!! cutting that right out of my diet. i've always loved whole wheat, and thought it was good for me in the past . ha, silly me. i'm looking for replacements though, because i love having my home made ham egg and cheese on a bagel but i can't have the bagel anymore i'm ready to replace pasta with oatmeal and nuts, and tortillas with rice or a veggie but i really crave carbs so i'm looking for other alternatives. wheat/gluten and sugar are the only things i'm cutting out at the moment, im trying to do a diet with no wheat/gluten, minimum sugar, and lots of veggies and healthy fats.
also, am i going to break out from all the toxins coming out you think?? i hope not, considering that's one of the main reasons i'm not eating wheat! i've never cut anything out before because i've always had a fairly balanced healthy diet, but i'm determined with this.

Do you think you have a gluten allergy? One of my old buddies and another SW member that came to stay with me mentioned that when her skin got nice it was because she cut out wheat. I bought a bag of rainbow quinoa that I plan on making this week. You can treat it like rice and substitute it. Mind you I don't eat it that often (1-2x a month) but it's a great way to "wean" yourself off of gluten. Carb cravings get really bad for me around period time, but I have found that I get sick off gluten and processed food now. PM me if you have any questions because I'm on my way out the door!!!

Ughhh yeah I just made the rainbow quinoa!!! I boiled it for about 15 mins but added a tsp of olive oil. I seasoned it with tumeric, cumin, curry, sea salt and pepper from the grinder.

Quinoa is an excellent substitute. It is also very filling.
You might notice temporary change in your skin when you rid your body of toxins, but then you will look and feel amazing and your skin will glow .

As far as I know, there are two differing opinions: Some believe as main stream science does that egg, cheese, and bacon are high fat and therefore bad. A smaller but also scientifically based group believes that gluten is not good for you and that many high fat foods are good. Some of these diets include: the Paleo Diet and the Atkins diet. I follow this belief. I eat protein, fruit, some nuts, and vegetables while avoiding processed foods and carbs. If you are interested in information on how to substitute fruits\ veggies\ meat for carbs, feel free to PM me.

I am certainly biased having been strictly vegan for three years and would like to get back to it. My interest in veganism is purely animal rights oriented but I think there is a lot to be said for the health benefits too. I shat a lot better at the time.

Consider dairy. Human milk is only used for human babies right? Cow's milk is for baby cows, not grown humans. People think it's basically your only source of calcium but green, leafy vegetables are better. Meat and dairy industry are very profitable in the US and thus have a lot of the advertising power. A bunch of other reasons I can't sufficiently explain right now, I am tired and still need to get up early. Egg whites are decently healthy but combine it with the yolk and you have a bunch of cholesterol. Tofu is equal or more protein, no cholesterol and I believe less calories (if you care about that). I think healthy fats are important (nuts or olive oil), bad fats should be minimized (cheese, animal dairy), I think complex carbs are important, protein is important (for me largely from legumes). I think natural sugar like from fruits is important and artificial sugars are bad and etc.

Nutrition is a topic where largely everyone thinks they're an expert and you're going to get countless opinions on every aspect of it. How did you hear that gluten is bad for everyone? I think if the only thing triggering your desire to avoid wheat or gluten is that you heard about it being undesirable from one source you should just keep doing what you're doing. But that's just me and I am not claiming to be an expert. Like in the Maria Kang thread people are different, I personally avoid meat entirely but some people eat it and are healthier than vegetarians or vegans blah blah blah....

Remember, the longer you go without having gluten, the more sensitive you will become to its effects. So if you aren't gluten intolerant and don't have Celiac disease, it'd be a good idea to keep some gluten in your life.

Agreed with others in the thread that there are probably many other things in your diet that are far more of a threat to aging than gluten (I'm lookin' at you, processed sugar!).

Re: eating lots of meat. Eating meat in moderation is fine, but it's nowhere near healthy (though yes, eating tons of meat will cause weight loss due to ketosis). Meat is extremely hard on the kidneys (meat's metabolic byproduct is nitrogenous waste, which can result in a slew of health issues), as well as cardiovascular issues and whatnot. Tempest - I'm not criticizing you. I hope you're sticking to lean meats and eat more fish and chicken than the red stuff!

I agree with the hope that Simone is consulting many sources and also working closely with a physician. On the other hand, not all sources agree that lean meat is the best health choice or that carbs should remain a part of a healthy diet. Some people choose to eat differently and I do not believe this thread was meant as a debate on diet choices.

Although I hope that Simone has done her research, I do not believe she was asking for if she was making the "right" choice. I believe she is looking for information on carb substitutes. I highly recommend these banana pancakes: http://www.notquitenigella.com/2013/...nana-pancakes/ They can be a bit floppy but 2 might be good with some sausage and egg between.

I am also excited to hear recipes that answer Simone's original question!! Anyone else have fun gluten free recipes?

Oh yeah totally! I'm more pescetarian than carnivore, but I do enjoy my steaks! For everyday stuff though I stick to chicken and turkey sausages.

The fish steamer I got a few months ago is a godsend! I perfected some steamed garlic and herb chicken!

yes i've heard it from MANY sources ( or else i wouldn't give it up, i love it!), although i know that there are countless diets out there that claim that meat is bad, wheat is good/ then wheat is bad and diary is good/ and then meat is bad dairy is bad wheat is bad..the only thing that i think everyone agrees on is that veggies are good! everything else is hotly debated. but i even heard a guy say that carrots were extremely bad for you! its like only freshly strained organic tears of a virgin will do these days, and everything we put in our bodies causes some damage according to somebody.
but yes i do agree that processed sugars are not good, and mess with collagen production. i'm going for very low sugar diet as well, and i only eat maybe one serving of meat a day and the rest is fish/seafood ( from the east coast, not west). i don't overly worry about it to the point of neuroticism, but i am very vain about my skin! lol. that's why i wanna do low sugar/high healthy fats diet. i'm looking to get my skin clearer and take some pounds off my stomach, but nowhere else.
i might just keep my one whole wheat bagel in my diet and not go overboard.

I second quinoa, props to tempest666 for suggesting it!
As for the effect on acne. Well I tried systematically cutting out everything I though could potentially cause my acne including dairy and gluten (at different times). In the end I found none of it made a difference and only hardcore prescription meds worked.
Saying that the cause of acne is different for everyone so it's worth a try

Just wanted to chime in. I am gluten intolerant, not celiac. I became intolerant years ago but learned of it a year ago when my health became so bad I had to be hospitalized and then a month later after more tests I learned gluten was the cause of all my problems. I have been gluten free for one year now. I avoid it at all times, though cross contamination is a real pain in the ass and I have my little reactions to gluten I unintentionally ate. Anyway, since its been a year now, I notice that my skin looks fantastic now. My stomach and digestion has improved and I am just healthier now because my body is able to absorb nutrients properly that it wasnt when gluten was destroying my insides. Also, I lost 20 lbs pretty darn (was not trying to) fast and everyone thought I was on drugs :/. But I have gained it all back now and happy about it, so I would not suggest this just for weight loss. And, true, if you are not gluten intolerant like me, keep SOME gluten in your diet!

How did you spice this dish? Just salt?

I always think of steamed fish as being like hospital food, so I'm curious how you cook it!

I cut gluten and dairy at my doctor's request and watched my ANA count in my blood work go to normal - finally! Got off a medication as a result. Then I cut soy and corn and focused on an alkaline diet. Best I've felt and looked in years.

so i guess the verdict is cut out most of it, but keep some in. i only eat my bagel once a day now, cut out tortillas, pasta, toast, and sandwiches! i broke out a little at the beginning of the week, wondering if that had something to do with it..really weird.

If you haven't already, I'd also recommend switching to whole grains (they're digested more slowly and are better for your skin due to being low-glycemic). Ezekiel makes great organic, sprouted-grain bagels that many gluten-sensitive people claim are easier on their systems (http://www.foodforlife.com/about_us/ezekiel-49).
