Mind Blowing OMG lightbulb idea to make people stop asking what I do for a living

I was reading the hermit thread, and sympathizing with all the conversations about how annoying it is to explain what I do for a living. Then it hit me! You know how annoying it is when someone gets into a pyramid scheme and is trying to get you to sign up for their stuff? What if I signed up for one of those, or mary kay or something, and then whenever someone asked I could just go on the whole sales pitch from it! Like how can there possibly be a more legit way to get people to back the fuck out of your business than that, right?!?! Right now I tell people I sell stuff on ebay and they seem ok with that, but I dunno, that just seems like more fun ... and maybe if they really think I make hundreds of dollars a day doing it they would sign up too. bahaaha.
    Yes, I'm real.

I say that I'm an independent contractor who works from home. If they ask me, I say it has to do with uploading and editing video stream. It's not a lie, usually people are too technologically inept to want to push it further. However, if it is someone my age I usually tell them "Well I take off my clothes and put things in my hooch for money on the internet." They look aghast and I say, wanna talk about it? 85% of the time they're really interested, especially when I throw out the words "no boss", "work own hours" and "lots of money".

I usually tell my own friends and my mother knows. I don't enjoy the discussion with my family that I don't see often, or my husband's friends. Everyone thinks I have a sugar daddy I guess which just annoys me since I support him basically. Nice idea but it sounds like a pain in the ass to memorize a sales pitch. I have a few other things I do and I just focus on that. Sometimes I say web design but that's no good if they actually see my level of incompetence or know anything about my vanilla webpage, which is very basic. I'd advise sticking with the ebay thing. Just complain about it now and then so it doesn't sound too good

I just tell them I am on welfare and food stamps and let them change the subject.

ha ha ha-- I was just watching Justified where Boyd and the crowd are down in Mexico and smuggling drugs and it makes me want to say, "I'm an evangelist for the Lord! Have you taken Jesus Christ, our savior, into your heart of hearts and left behind your sinful ways!"

Because, evangelists are probably worse than pyramid schemers.

This is genus! I wouldn't say Mary Kay though, cause Mary Kay actually costs you a ton of money to sign up, and people will wonder why you don't have product all over your house.

I know there is a pyramid scheme that sells cheap long distance or something - that one might be good. Or you could say Avon, which is like $20.00 bucks to join...hahaha this could be fun actually It will definitely get people to shut up, that is for sure. When I was selling Mary Kay (don't ask, terrible experience) most of my friends avoided my phone calls.

LOL. And I used to sell AVON too. I got this one nosey neighbor who, a few times per year, will ask me "So are you still working from home? So what is it that you do?" Annoying as hell. OMG, if I were to answer her question using the exact wording that my hatin-ass sister used the other day (I "show my titties to a bunch of strangers on the internet"), the look on my neighbor's face would be PRICELESS. Just a heads up...if you're gonna make up something about what you do, keep in mind that some people are so annoyingly inquisitive (like my neighbor) that they will follow up with even more questions about what you've just told them. LOL. A brief one-line description isn't enough for some of these people...

And it'd be nice if my grandmom would stop telling folks looking for work that I work from home, cuz this one woman approached me at a wedding reception asking how she can get into something like that. *rolls eyes* Google search exists for a reason...

I always just say I do call center work and if they ask anymore questions, then I just say I signed a confidentiality agreement so I can't really give out any more details. Works like a charm for me :-)

When people ask what I do for a living I tell them:
"I am a freelancer who produces and edits video content for a conglomerate of businesses online."

    Which is 100% true.

Believe it or not, people rarely ask for details. You want someone's eyes to glaze over and roll back in their head really fast -- just say something boring and technical.

The rare people who ask me the follow up question, (mainly just to make conversation or be polite) "How does one get into something like that?" I always smile really widely and say....http://www.elance.com/

Edited to note: They pay freelancers through Payoneer Prepaid MasterCard too!

U could always say your a trust fund baby..your grandma left u a good amount of money but not a crazy amount..say your on a budget and only get so much every month..I mean if u have to go into detail but my gf is actually a real trust fund baby and she's always home and when they ask..this is what she tells them..she says they don't ask anymore after that..

I say I do ebay but I did do ebay for many years..so I know how to answer the questions but when they start asking too much..I just say..I did my research..got my vendors and sell car stuff..which I'm a tomboy and I did sell car parts..I know..crazy right? But if they ask for a store (which only happened one time) I give them my competitors store name lol!

I have a part time vanilla job from home taking calls for a pizza place so I just tell people I do that full time. I also worked as a call center trainer from home before I quit it to cam full time so I will use that as an excuse sometimes too

Okay, people always assume that about me for god knows what reason, and its not a good thing. Its not even true in my case. But if they assume you are a trust fund baby, they will be really rude to you and assume you don't work hard enough and don't deserve any of the income you have. They will act passive aggressive and constantly give commentary on why they work ~*so much harder*~ than you. Then they will assume you should be generous and give them money or pay for their stuff (drinks, food, etc).

My best friend growing up actually was a trust fund baby (her dad died when she was a baby) who inherited quite a bit of money. She literally cut off all contact with majority of her family and all but like 3 friends because everyone would always ask her for money or be really rude to her to the point where it would make her cry. She was a student, so its not like she wasn't doing anything, and she even received scholarships for her good grades, but people were still rude.

So honestly, going that route probably isn't a good one IMO lol.

What I do is, I tell guys I date "I work in the fetish realm" to see how accepting they are of "adult entertainers" and when pressed, I tell them I do a lot of work online - "I work on some sites." When pressed further, I tell them I primarily work on LiveJasmin (lol) and I have our state blocked and it doesn't accept proxies, so they can't see me. That's about as far as they press.

For the average civilian, like when I'm at the dentist or something and they ask, I tell them I am a makeup artist because I was one for a long time. If its someone in the beauty industry that I don't want to network with and don't want to talk about adult stuff with, I say "I am a private investigator." Its not like any of these are exactly lies.

Once they get to know me and I really trust them, I will tell them all of the jobs I have. But otherwise, they don't need to know details. But I NEED them to know somewhat what I do, so I can judge whether or not they can handle it. the adult part at least. If they are some random adult, I know they can't handle it.

I've been thinking about doing that too, becoming a distributor and selling body wraps and/or sex toys on ebay (cause I hate doing home parties). Sell some shit on Etsy. My mom, bestie, and boyfriend all know what I do for a living. But for people like BFs grandparents, other old-fashioned people, it's hard to think up good excuses.

I tend to just flat out say it, or say " performing arts" that seems to work well enough because theater types are apparently creepy and nobody wants to venture down that rabbit hole
