Travel Wifi & Camming Abroad (London Ladies, HAuLLPPP!)

Hi, bbs! Okay so I'm going to be booking my 5 week stay in the next few weeks on airbnb to London and I need to prepare some things before my arrival. London ladies, (or those who've cam traveled there) which route should I go concerning high speed internet?

I've wilted my search down to three flats to choose from with wifi, and I'm waiting on their responses as to how fast their speeds are. I'm willing to purchase an air card or even rent a router if I have to. I haven't found any air cards with high enough speeds to run SM's encoder or split cam but I'm optimistic in my endeavors.

I will have more than enough funds to live off of and I might not cam considering this is my retirement vacation. However, it's a little tempting to be able to brag about "working" in London. I'm also visiting to possibly one day expand my vanilla business for future franchising opportunities.

I've done my homework and I'm looking into the requirements before I go as I believe on a visitor's visa there is to be no working, even self-employment. I've always bent the rules but your girl doesn't want to get permanently kicked from London (I was almost banned from Canada!) lol. I did read the travel camming thread but no one really had any answers as to what to choose. Anyway, can anyone help a chick out? TIA.

Ugh, be very, very careful about self-employment income while on a visitor visa in the UK. They're really cracking down on "foreign job thieves" (no comment on how fucking stupid this is), and I personally wouldn't want to run the risk of getting banned for 20+ years...especially as many other countries' visa forms ask if you've been banned from other countries, and if you have then you can't go to those countries either.

The WTO wants free trade of goods worldwide with no restrictions...why not free trade of people? Whole other story...

Thank you, Bootsie. I really appreciate it. I wonder if I "work" as in stream, but don't collect any funds while I'm overseas if that counts? For example, I stream live and I get money in my US account but I don't request it, and I don't acknowledge or take out funds used during my time abroad if that still counts as "work"? I mean, honestly, isn't that the only way they could actually tell is if money from the account you paid for is being used/spent? I will have some funds exchanged through my bank before I go and even a international debit card with a budget balance. Basically the amount I show customs is the amount I will have the whole time I'm there minus anything I spend.

I use payoneer so obviously records would show that I received funds during that time but I don't plan on using/taking my payoneer card. I know that SM has it set up where they will hold onto your funds for you until you've made X amount. So I wonder if I set it up to say $2k and it just accumulates in my account but isn't paid out, am I really "working" illegally?

Streaming could be looked at as free work or exhibitionism if I'm actually not collecting and cashing/spending the money made. Does that make sense? Better yet I can just do indy shows through skype and let the money pile up that way too so there's no real way of knowing unless I actually accept and move money around.

I plan on having an allowance while there, but not depositing any new money into my account whist there. I suppose, if a tree falls in a forest and no one hears it...did it really fall? lol.

Okay. I've made up my mind. I'm going to spend what I've made previously and enjoy my vacation. There's no need to break any rules. Thanks

If you happen to want to get on the internet while you are in London (eg to check your emails or maybe have a Skype convo with your friends/family!) then don't expect the speeds to be super fast. Unless they are advertising 'fibre' or 'cable' internet then most broadband upload speeds in the UK don't go above 1 Mbps. I am able to stream on SM without splitting using about 0.8 upload (my ISP got taken over and I'm waiting for the next one) but I've had to reduce the bitrate on the encoder. Aircards (mobile broadband in the UK) won't work as you'll get through too much data and they cause too much latency for the encoder. I've tried and it was a no-go.

^^^ officially, two arguments can be made as to whether camming is a 'domestic' activity in the UK ( and other countries ). The first is that the income may be 'domestic' if the company paying the money is located within the country. The second is that money earned from the company is being deposited / routed through a bank account located within that country. For an American visiting the UK, and working through a non UK based webcam host, with the resulting earnings still being deposited to a US bank account, HMRC will have great difficulty laying a claim to that income.

The bad news, of course, is that the IRS will definitely lay claim to that income, since the USA is virtually alone in taxing the world-wide income of its citizens.

Melonie raises excellent points-HMRC would probably have trouble laying claim to the funds. And I think you can earn $10,000 or something before HMRC will even start taxing you (need to double check that amount). So even if they did find out that you earned money with an overseas cam company and had that money deposited into your US bank account, can they even raise an issue with it if you're below their taxation threshold? I'm just musing. Maybe just avoid the issue all together by offering Skype shows for Amazon cards? (provided you have a full shopping basket and can redeem them pronto?)

    Enjoy your trip!

Thank you for clarifying this, Melonie. I literally was thinking along the same lines. In order for someone to be technically illegally working they'd have to be working for the other country and getting paid by the other country. AW is located in the UK, however, they would be paying me through payoneer in my US account but I know they might change my location once I'm there. If that's the case then I could get into some trouble but I still would be getting paid US cash through payoneer. And no, SM is located in Cyprus I believe, and not in the UK Thank you! To me it's almost like being a traveling writer. Your published and still receiving checks, but you're still working as you write lol.

As I said before, I'm going to be exchanging dollars to pounds before I leave and taking an international debit card with me so no money will actually be deposited or exchanged between hands in the UK. They seem to be slow anyway when it comes to money and traveling. In 2009 I went to Canada and used an ATM while there and they charged me a fee. My bank just now issued me a credit for that ATM fee a few months ago. It took them 5 years to go over their shit and credit me, lol. I'm going to be playing it safe though, for sure. Thanks, bbs!
