    Default Car Accident need avise/opinions

Hey girls... soo a week ago I had a car accident I had a burn on my forearm from the air bag which is healing pretty nicely, and whiplash and my lower back pain and swelling ... so my question is would you return back to work after a eek if lets say your feeling 80% better?? I know I wouldn't be doing no krazy shit on the pole but I really need the $$ and bills are pilling up. WWYD??

i would take it slow..go in for a short shift and see how you do. don't hurt yourself though! your health is the most important..you don't want to hurt yourself even more and have to be out of work for even longer.
do you have any savings that you could throw towards bills, so you can wait til you heal completely?

If you can afford it, I'd recommend finding a massage therapist (NOT in a spa - look for an independent LMT) who specializes in whiplash. Do you have insurance? If so, a doctor might refer you to a massage therapist so your insurance will cover part or some of the cost. Doctors (my mom, who is a doctor, fully agreed with me on this), have only a very basic concept of how muscular pain works - they are very drug-oriented. Massage therapists, on the other hand, are specifically trained to recognize referral pain patterns related to muscles, how postural issues affect muscle pain, and how to go about rectifying those problems. They will often recommend stretches as 'homework' after your sessions.

If you can't afford massage, try to do some stretching at home. Many of the muscles in your neck are completely locked up right now, which can cause serious pain and compensation patterns that will cause secondary pain problems. Hold each stretch for about five breaths - make sure you're taking nice, slow breaths during the stretches to help your muscles relax into their old positions.

How understanding is your management about letting you skip stage? Would a doctor's note or a generous tip make them more likely to let you? I think being able to work the floor only would be much better for your recovery than having to go up on stage however many times a shift.

I'd also recommend quadratus lumborum stretches as well as stretches for the psoas - those muscles tend to lock up and create serious pain when we've had a fall or other traumatic blow to the body.

    QL stretch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-U4...W5yz2eUnhFfghw
    Psoas stretch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPWfls_WLEI

For general neck stretching, I recommend sitting (straight) on a chair, while sitting on your hand (to anchor your shoulder down). Then tilt your head to the opposite side, playing around with angles to stretch different muscles. Don't do any sudden movements - and keep breathing deeply the whole time. Don't push yourself, or your muscles will only lock up more intensely.

If you can, take your time and take another week to heal up to 95%+. If you can't, go slow as the other ladies here mentioned. Just be careful, okay?

*Sigh* This makes me so sad. I wish we had some sort of benefits/healthcare provisions/paid leave.

I'm saying this from experience with a collision to the back of a relative's car we were riding in. The symptoms come up for weeks, body and brain injuries, bleeding, nerve pain, stiffness, dizziness, disjointed perception from concussion etc. I'd say if you must go, play it very safe and take a cab to and from work, get a note from your doctor to avoid all stage work, and avoid any physical exertion outside work for another week at least. God forbid, if something develops, you don't want it said by the insurance co. that your injury was caused at work, negating your claim.

If you pay your taxes I think you could get the car insurance to comp you for however much time off you need to heal properly. I was hit by a car about three years ago (totally my fault, the driver was turning left, I got hit and was sore but nothing major). Maybe a week or so after the fact the driver's insurance carrier called me to ask me some questions to come up with a "settlement". Asked me a bunch about my injuries (I got a scan since a hairline fracture in my hip was my only concern, I am a runner). They also asked me if and how much time I needed off work! So don't rush back, if you haven't been in contact with the insurance yet, do that asap. Go see a doctor if you haven't and don't go back to work until the doctor clears you. Tell their office you are there because of a car accident and they shouldn't demand payment same day.

I really think if you've kept records of your earnings and can give the insurance company a fair average they'll comp you!

If it was the other person's fault their insurance may pay you. But you are better off in the long run to wait and make sure you don't have recurring pain and need more trips to doctors. Once you take money for your injuries you waive all future claims.

I agree you should try to skip stage, stretch a lot, and give careful dances. Tell customers what happened without being overdramatic and see if you can get some pity tips!

These might be times to cash in on some regulars. I was in a car accident and ended up with a herniated disc. I didn't realize it until I decided to go back to work too quickly and ended up with really bad pain, got an MRI and there it was :S Almost a year later I still have to be really careful at how and how much I work at the club.

I'm so sorry, glad you're ok. Try to take it easy heel wise, don't over exert yourself onstage, and I second the taking a cab to work thing. You probably have follow up exams scheduled-PLEASE go to them, as some injuries are slower to show.

Aw girl I'm sorry, I have so been there!
I finally couldn't stand the pain after about 2 weeks and went to a holistic chiropractor and massage therapist. I found out it would have best to go ASAP before the scar tissue builds up. I definitely agree with charlie61 on the massage and stretching thing. Also I recommend talking to a lawyer if this applies to you, be careful what you say to the insurance company.
One stretch that I like is this: roll up a towel and lay down, place it horizontally under your head. Now take about 30sec-1min for each vertebrae, and move your body inch by inch, relaxing as the towel moves under each vertebrae and holding for about 30 sec. This is great in the morning if you wake up stiff. Also, I bought gel packs and heat packs, 15 min ice, followed by 15 min heat for when the pain was bad. Good luck!

This. I would recommend staying away from work until you feel 100% better, honestly. If you don't, you risk re-injury that could cause you to be unable to work for even longer. If you feel like you HAVE to go back now, I absolutely would not say anything to management about it. If you do, they probably will require you to bring in a doctor's note saying that you're fully cleared to return to work, which you may not be able to get since you aren't completely better yet. (FWIW, I speak from personal experience.)
