    Default jumping jacks

I was thinking of doing daily half hour jumping jacks for some exercise. Does anyone else do them? Are they effective for you as a cardio workout?

I would prefer running but the weather in my area isn't great and want to stay off my knees. I don't have a bike yet. I figured jumping jacks would be a convenient way to get in some exercise at home (floor is carpeted) while I get settled into my new apartment.

Jumping jacks are just as high impact as running for your knees, hips, and ankles. Could you lift weights at home? What about squats, lunges, leg lifts or whatever?

Tried them, not really a weights person. Yes jumping jacks are high impact, but I have thick carpeting which would take away some of the shock and I may use matting. I don't want to run outside because of concrete.

Full disclosure: I have a staunch anti-jumping jack bias. I hate them. I was in the Army and I used to have to do barely 5 minutes of jumping jacks every other morning and it was fucking obnoxious. It gave me a stomach ache and made my ankles hurt. I would think getting a step block and just doing mini-stairs would be both better for your butt/legs and also way less annoying.

Try doing jumping jacks for 10 minutes right now and see how it feels. If you can't stand it just imagine how miserable it would be to do them for 30 minutes daily!

it will also make your skin sag! jogging and jumping jacks are not that great for you imo. if you can do swimming, eliptical, biking, stairmaster, etc..something that doesn't have you bouncing your weight up and down

Coincidentally I did do ten minutes worth from watching this guy:

It was fun with the video and motivating, but quite a workout and I don't think I would be able to do half an hour of straight jumping jacks.

I'm not so sure about how true this is. I've heard it said before and I've heard conflicting things. Some say it's the damage caused by skin wear and tear from the shock running causes to the skin. But it could also be the results of rapid weight loss caused by running and/or the runner spending years outdoors running in the sun. I've been a runner for over ten years and fortunately I am not sagging a far as I know.

And believe me...if I could swim sooner I would. I live up a hill from a lake and once the weather gets a little warmer I will probably be down there every day. I just need to do something with myself until I finally get a bicycle and cycle outside or I get down to the lake. Whichever comes first.

Customers would probably pay to watch you do them on cam.

i think most people agree that it can cause breasts to sag unless you are wearing a very tight supportive exercise top, so i don't see that it would be a huge leap to assume it would do the same to your face.. but i just don't take any chances! if you have a very soft bouncy surface then i think it would lessen the risks.

You know, there probably is a niche in this. Unfortunately I do not cam.

Weight bearing exercises are not as bad as they're made out to be. The shock of impact causes serum calcium to re-enter the bones which builds stronger bones and helps prevent osteoporosis in the long term. But anyway, my original question was meant more for whether or not jumping jacks made a decent enough workout, not so much the pros and cons of one exercise over the other as I am well aware of associated health risks. I will just try them and find my own answer.
