Default Club Told Me That I Needed to Get a Spray Tan to Work, is this Typical?

I've moved around a lot in the past two years, so I've worked at a number of clubs and although I'm very very pale (seriously just imagine the palest human being possible) I have never been told by management to get a spray tan in order to work. Ever. I've actually found that being super pale is a thing that some guys go for, and it works for me, so I'm hesitant to go darker, especially because that means I'll be paying around $50 every two weeks to maintain it and I'll have to buy new makeup to match my skin tone (and I don't buy cheap makeup). It really just feels like a waste because I don't feel like it would suit me, but if most places are going to make me do it I'm willing to have it done.
Anyone else had to deal with this?

Never worked in clubs like that, but I have heard that a few do make girls get spray tans.

Not me personally, but a club chain made girls use their specific fake tan that they HAD to use. So it was doubly bad actually because they 1. had to wear fake tan if they wanted to work there and 2. it had to be bought from the club and I think it was quite over priced.

That's the only time i've heard of this occurring, though this was in Australia.

I wouldn't personally bother working in a club that absolutely made you do something like that. If I want to wear fake tan, it's because I want to.

Find somewhere else and rock that paleness you've got going! Like you said some dudes love it…and they do!

Not in America but since I worked in London it's like every house mom has an opinion on what color my hair should be be, if it should be curled, if I should be tanned, etc. The club I'm working at right now made me sign a contract agreeing to maintain a "slight tan with no streak marks."

I'm also very fair but I've never been told to tan. Can you try putting on some bronzer and saying you tanned? Okay, I don't know if that would be believable but you could try it. If they don't hire you with that minimal change, I'd go someplace else. I'm not terribly keen on the idea of changing your look in a way that's both uncomfortable for you and a significant investment just to get hired at one club.

I've never encountered that, but if you want to work at that club, it's not like you really have a choice in the matter. $100 a month isn't the end of the world if the earning potential at that club compared to the others nearby is more than that, so maybe give the other clubs in the city a try and if you find the money isn't that great, get the take and try out this club. There's nothing stopping you from leaving if you find it's not worthwhile, and you'll only be about $50 in the end.

I worked in a dive, & when the one mgr. was there, she'd always insist on me wearing my hair up, when 9/10 guys wanted it down..
Like it was mentioned, you could try a bronzer, it washes off, orhttp://southseasskincare.com/

Never had this happen before. I'm pretty pale myself and have definitely had managers and girls mention that I would look a little better with a slight tan, but never been told I needed to be tan to work there. Like Shanna said, if the money is worth it at that club, maybe it'll be worth the $100 investment a month. If not, time to find another option.

I used to be such a stickler for tanning and perfect makeup, but my boyfriend prefers my pale skin and natural look so I stopped tanning and wearing heavy makeup and wouldn't you know it but my money actually went up! It's amazing how what managers and other strippers think men want is opposite from what customers actually want. lol

They told me to dye and curl my hair as well, but that's not really a big deal because I don't consider that a major expense and it's not going to drastically change my look.

I think I might get a very light spray tan to get the job and then see how good the money is. If it's good, I'll keep going with it. If it's not, I'll just let it fade out and see if anyone notices or cares while looking for another club. I'm pretty sure it was just that one manager that cared anyway, because everyone else said that I looked great.

nope, never heard that myself, although i always go to work with a good fake tan. i just look awful pale!
a lot of clubs still have the 90s ideal..super skinny, tan, blond, huge fake boobs. that's their model. outdated, and hopefully someday it will change..but then again a lot of customers still have that 90s ideal stuck in their heads too.
i would get a fake tan ( doesnt have to be spray, there are good cheap fake tanners available), and try it out. if the money sucks, fuck 'em.

Yeah, that's definitely true. There's this whole idea that all guys want tanned blondes with thigh gaps and huge boobs, but there's a lot of people that really aren't into that at all. That type of look may have been in for a while, but from what I can tell people are really getting into the natural look these days. Personally I think it's very appealing when girls just look like exceptionally good looking REAL people.

It doesn't have to cost that much. Just get a lotion and apply it daily. Also you could probably get by with just using a bronzer if you do that.

That's what my boyfriend suggested, but I've used those sorts of things in the past and the NEVER look good on me. They always end up streaky and way too dark because theyre meant for people that have more color than I do.

Oh good! That's how pale I am too and I'm glad there's something out there that I can try. It's so exhausting to waste your money on a bunch of different things and have none of them work.

You don't have to spend money on a professional spray tan if you don't want a permanent tan outside of work. Sally Hansen airbrush legs or le tan wash off tan works well (there are plenty of other brands) and you can use it before or at work and then wash if off when you get home afterwards.

I guess the club has a certain type of "look" that they consider when hiring. So, if you want to work there a tan won't hurt. If not, maybe finding another club in your area so that you feel more comfortable would be a better idea.

Someone told me that I looked very healthy with how tan I was. That was the same stuff I used. I use the stuff from Victoria's Secret now since it's not that sticky and smells better. It looks good but doesn't get as dark I think.

It was just sort of strange because from the looks of things they had a pretty diverse group of girls there. It's something I would have expected from a place that had a more obvious style going for it.

I get complimented on my "porcelain" skin but make more money with a tan. Plus I'm more confident and look thinner. I've never been told to get one but then again me likey the dives.

If you've never used sunless tanner, I'd get a good spray tan then use gradual tanner so you can get used to applying it without streaks. After that I'd get a bottle of the dark stuff cause its cheaper in the long run to do it yourself. (for me anyways)

You have to exfoliate before really good. Dry exfoliation works best & carefully apply the product & blow dry yourself. I'm very fair also & have had success with these products. Being in this business you have to learn these beauty tricks or shell out big bucks. Sucks they made so many demands but hey who doesn't love a makeover. Do some research & you can easily pull this look together.

this is normal and get sally hansen airbrush.

I'm ridiculously fair; freckles on the face, shoulders, chest, and some spots on my arms and legs, I always burn if I don't use sunscreen, etc. I've never been told by a club manager that I had to have a tan in order to work at their club. I did have one manager tell me I could use a tan and he wouldn't let me work nights unless I got one. Needless to say - I left the club and went to a different one that didn't want all of their girls looking like Barbie. Not only do I make a lot more money being snow white, but I stand out in a good way. Not every guy wants all strippers to look the same. If they did we would live in a very boring fantasyland. I also get complimented on how youthful I look because of my fair skin tone. I'm not saying that girls with tans aren't youthful, but most of the girls I have worked with in Florida live in the sun and their skin shows the damage the sun has caused.

If you don't feel sexy with a tan, don't do it. It'll mess with you head and ultimately your money earning potential. I do wanna ask ladies that do spray tan a question though - doesn't the fake tan rub off on guys pants/shirts from grinding/sweating during dances? Or being physical for pole or floor work?

it really depends on the kind..some, like sally hansen, is completely temporary and that was my biggest problem with wearing that. others, you put on the night before and it temporarily "dyes" your skin a tiny bit, you shower before going to work to get rid of any excess.
i totally agree with you about the real tanning thing, just ONE visit to a tanning bed before you are 30 ups your chances of skin cancer 75%!! and it will make you age soooo fast.

I just get a $10 bottle of St Tropez tanner, do it once a week, and it lasts me a month. Google 'how to apply fake tan' for tips. Make sure to put moisturiser on your hands, feet and knees so it doesn't get orange there. I apply it really thinly. Watch out that you don't accidently get a "deep bronze shade" or something too dark.

The one night bronzers are good, but I find the only one that's pale enough is the lightest shade of sally hansens. But it does come off on customers shirts/ can make the pole slippery.

Or you can just get a spray tan, I ask my girl to do it really light and it looks natural and not orange. I would never wear tan for myself, and without it i get a lot of "porcelain skin" comments, but my regulars tell me I look healthy and like I've lost weight when I have a tan (when I've actually gained weight).
