    Default Henna Hair Dye?

I was wondering if anyone else had tried henna hair dye and their experience? Any advice?

I have naturally dark brown/black hair. I love my natural color and just want to cover some grey. The reg home hair dye just isnt working as well as I want.
After reading Amazon reviews... they seemed to be mixed about it.

once you dye it with henna, you're going to have a HELL of a time getting it back out, and also make sure that you have no synthetic hair dye in your hair when you dye it with henna. it really makes your hair silky though, way better than the regular dyes out there in regards to damage.

I'm almost totally gray. I used the Lush henna for years and loved it. It covered all of the gray and never faded. It also improved the health of my hair.

The downside is you can never get rid of it. It has to grow out. The lush hennas won't react with regular hair dye like some of them will though so you don't have to worry about damaging your hair if you've chemically dyed it previously. They have a dark brown and a black henna. You can even mix them to get an in between color if you like.

i have been colouring my hair with henna for approximately 5 years.... i have never used chemical dye on my hair, and i started out with classic henna... i wanted that copper red hair... it proved to be very effective, and i'm still in love with it !

mind you, the only natural state of the henna colours your hair red... the other stuff are bullshit...i have black hair now, which is a result of an indigo mask over it right after a henna colouring.

The process is a rather messy and prolonged one.... you mix the dye with hot water and an acid ( acid helps the pigment release).. this could be lemon juice or vinegar... and let it macerate for around 12 hours... afterwards, on freshly washed and dried hair ( try to blodry your hair with the hottest option, for the cuticles to open up), you apply the mix with gloves... be very careful about this because it permanently stains fabric... make sure you wear something that you won't regret ruining it...... i usually sleep with it and keep it for 12 hours, with a bag on my head and some towels on my neck and pillow.... due to the warmth of the scalp, it will start to drip.

afterwards, you rinse it off without using any hair products, otherwise you'd wash away some of the pigment... it usually takes another 48 hours for it to oxidize on the hair, therefore, the real colour will show up after 2 whole days.

it's helped my hair alot.. it looks and feels more bulked up, however, it kinda tangles more at the back of my neck... also there's this foresty/fresh cut grass that the henna paste has... some love it, other people become nauseous of it.. i don't mind it.... and the smell reactivates the next few times you wash/wet your hair after colouring...

    good luck !

I'm a natural redhead but henna over it just for the conditioning benefits. It makes your hair stronger and silkier, permanently. Something about how these molecules called lawsones actually bind with your hair strands and fill in rough spots. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawsone

I used to use a clear henna spray, think it's called Henna Gold brand. I liked it as it gave some thickness, a hairspray effect, & sun protection

Henna is a great natural protein conditioner and hair dye. You can even mix it with the indigo for all you dark heads if you want to keep your black color. I'm naturally curly and I use henna all the time, actually for the past 7-8 years. I usually use it a few times a year, not much. But it works well and like someone else said, it does give your hair lustre.

That's good, you have virgin hair so the henna will work well. Just be sure to let the henna sit for some hours before you apply it so that the dye can release from the minerals.
