Default Help in hustling my cell phone provider...

I have been with TMobile for going on 9 years now. Generally, I am happy with their service, so I don't really want to change to another company and risk bad coverage in my house, etc. ...BUT

I think at this point with alllllll the competition out there I should be given some perks to stay with them. I called about a month ago because I am really ready for a new phone, and wanted to feel out what they would do for me as far as a discount on a phone or lower my monthly. They gave me a pathetic offer, and I want to go at them again before having to actually leave them for another when I call their bluff. I know they could do something for me, but I just need some tips on how to crack them.

    Any tips from awesome hustlers?

They've gone all no contracts now so I really don't think you have much leverage. You'd be better off moving to a new company and bargaining. Most all companies have no contract ni except Verizon ( well they do but it's hella expensive and they don't promote it) they promote their knew plan were you pick what coverage you want and pay like that and it comes to like 90 a month. I really did tons of research when I switched from sprint. I pay for home phone( unlike most people) so I didn't want to pay a lot for cell( I had sprint for 12 years) most of which my fiancé paid but when I had to pay I was paying 80 a month for 450 min and no smart phone. I don't care about 500 phones so I chose straight talk. I paid 150 for my phone and I pay 48 a month. That's it. I travel so service is important for me. So far I've been 3 states and driven across country and the only place I had a problem was Houston( I found out I just had to dial all area codes.) It runs off Verizon towers. Check them out , you can get Iphone and Samsung 4 I believe but you have to pay cash. Imo better than being held hostage to a company!

I would investigate what the coverage is like in places you need to be. The maps are all lies, and since they have different towers, they have different dead zones. Verizon is best where I am, but it has some annoying dead spots that other carriers do not. The smaller carriers tend to have really good reception in cities and along interstates but can disappear outside of that area

I don't really understand all the no contract nonsense, are people really changing carriers every 18 months? who has the time to bother?

One thing is verizon uses a different system from the others so no sim cards no bringing your phone with you.

I have been with verizon since, well before it was verizon, and they treated me well the one time I needed an upgrade in a short time

Who are you dealing with at TMobile? I don't know if your average mall kiosk or whatever has the same interest in you as a customer as a true 'company store' would

They're getting away with contracts because there's more competition now and who wants to be stuck paying 100 a month when there are half a dozen carriers out there under 50 bucks now. There's more supply than demand time to move with the times! I wish cable, electric and water were like this...

^ exactly. i've been with straight talk for years now, and although they aren't the latest and greatest, its only 45 a month for unlimited EVERYTHING. and i can drop them at any point i want by just not going to pick up another time card. i'll be damned if im gonna pay twice as much for what im getting already

^ Yeah, I'm liking it. I got it in oct after you said you had it and didn't have a problem whn you traveled out of your state. So far so good. I paid for the phone cash and pay 48 a month with tax and the service has been pretty much as good as sprint. The phone is a lower end android but does as much as my friends Iphones and higher end ones and I don't need to upgrade every 6 months when they come out with number 6 or 7. If you really want the Iphone or a Samsung they have older versions with straight talk( they just cost 3-500). I went to sprint and played with all their high end phones just to make sure I wouldn't care if I didn't have one and surprisingly I like my Huawei ascend 4.0 android better than the 500 phones I checked out. My sisters had 3 5-600 phones in the last year because she breaks them or they stop working . No thanks!

Thanks so much for the info!
    @Oldster, I just called the 800 number.
I appreciate all of this! I will do a bit more haggling with T-Mobile and give Straight Talk a look as well.
I paid TOO much for my current phone, and I hate it, so I def will look into the one you mentioned.

My ex husband has been in the wireless business for like 12 years. Back in the day he started out as a regular call center representative, worked his way up to a manager, and eventually became the associate director of an entire call center.
When I was with him he would tell me all the things he dealt with at work. The gist I got out of it is that they can NEVER change what you pay for your actual plan. People choose the plan they want, fully aware of the price, and that's that.

Now, what they might waver on a little is the actual phone you get with your plan. For example, if you have to wait a certain amount of time before upgrading a phone , they might let you upgrade early. If you were going to do that, or something similar, do it in person.

I think the fact you have been with them 9 years says a lot, and they should help you out in some way !

Yeah, I'm actually ok on the plan I have. I really just want a deal on a phone. I'll go into the local store and see what they can do for me. Thanks for the info Swan!
