Default Quit smoking, but work in smoking club

I'm at 50 days without cigarettes (after being a 10 year/pack a day smoker!) but quitting has really affected my work habits because the club I work in is full of smoking. It's so hard and tempting to watch everyone around me smoking, I've been avoiding going in. The last night I went in was successful (I didn't slip at all) because I brought those mint & cinnamon tea tree toothpicks with me. It helped that it gave me a line about "oral fixations & needing to have something in my mouth". But I still keep putting off work because I'm tempted and afraid of slipping up & getting hooked again. Anyone else been here and had this issue? I'm considering getting an e-cig and putting non-nicotine juice in it just in case. What has worked for you guys? Did you avoid customers that were smoking? Were you able to quit while working in a smoking club?

I'm working at a club right now where we're not allowed to take smoke breaks and e-cigs have been a godsend for me. They feel a lot more like real cigarettes than I would have imagined and I love them so much I've practically stopped smoking regular ones! They're just so much more convenient because I can smoke them in my room, while I'm cooking, etc, and they definitely help with the oral fixation and would be nice to have while sitting with a smoking customer! So if you don't mind the e-cigs I would say that's a good option, otherwise I think it will just take time to get rid of the cravings. Someone once told me to think of your cravings like a dangerous animal - feed it, and it will grow stronger; starve it, and it will get weaker. I've quite several substances over my lifetime and that's definitely been my experience.

Thank you for this thread!!! and audrey, that is true! but I think switching to a non smoking club if u can is much much healthier because second hand smoke is just nearly as bad for you and if you are looking to keep your body free of the toxins, nicotine, and chemicals then its best to just locate and work at a non smoking club. U will find that you have more time for dancing and earning that cash!! When the non smoking ban went into affect at my old club, everyone complained. but really it was a live saver for me, and a real blessing in disguise because it took away the habits and tempation everywhere, and i didnt want to go in the nasty and crowded outside smoking area.

Ok. I just wanna jump in & say..I've quit a long time ago, but had HEAVY smoking roomies, & everyone that stopped by was a heavy smoker, sometimes up to 5 ppl or more all smoking! In addition to the continous smoking day & night, & even with multiple air cleaning machines.
So. I notice my body going thru a type of withdrawl for a couple of months. Just sayin' this may make it more difficult for you, + the fact you're in that environment.
Good luck though, you can do it!

wow, where are you that smoking is allowed inside??
ecig! that's the only thing that was able to save me from smoking. i have a serious oral fixation, its the hand to mouth thing that gets me, not the nicotine. now i can say that i can watch my boyfriend puff on a cig all day long and not have the smallest desire to light one up as long as i have my ecig. even when i get stressed out, i don't think of smoking a real one.
if you can't get one of those, a close second would be a lollipop, twizzlers, anything you can fiddle with, to do the hand to mouth thing.

Hah, I'm in New Orleans, I don't think we have any non-smoking clubs here! I think a lot of it is the hand to mouth action for me too, so I'm gonna get on it & get a no-nicotine e-cig for back up. Having some kind of plan makes me feel more secure all in all.
Also gonna try to drink less. I generally don't get wasted, but I do catch a buzz. Of course drinking makes me want to smoke...maybe I'll go in on week nights when it's not as much of a 'crazy party' environment & I'm not so tempted. (Then again weeknight $ isn't as tempting..Ahh, frustration!) I'm gonna give it a go tonight! Audrey- thanks, I like that line about starving it, that's what I'll try to do.

Non- smokers feel free to chime in with how long its been since you quit and how now you don't even think of it!

I quit 12 years ago through hypnosis - I cut the Mcdonalds straws into cigarette length pieces and used those as a crutch for a few months - good luck and I hope you can stick it out - it is soooo worth it to be smoke-free

I'm in New Orleans, too. Now I'm wondering who you may be. . .

I quit using the patch several years ago, before the ubiquity of e-cigs. I had several dancers tell me that dancing with a nicotine patch visible was the trashiest thing imaginable (often while chewing gum or smoking, of course), but customers actually seemed to like it. Either we had rapport because we had shared the hardship of quitting smoking, or I was a girl making an effort to improve her lot in life.

I'm guessing at 50 days you no longer use nicotine in any form, though. It sounds like you know what you're doing. Fearing that a strip club will make you start smoking again is perfectly rational. Hell, they made me start smoking again (not much, but I usually have at least one cigarette at the end of a shift, and have been sucking on an e-cig a few times a day). It's really hard. All you can do is remind yourself of your strengths and your accomplishments. Celebrate every time you make it through a shift without smoking.

Ugh. When I started typing I thought I might actually have advice to share. I guess I don't really. Congratulations and good luck is really all I should say.

People don't realize how much of the cigarette addiction is the hand to mouth thing. Plus it gives you something to do when you are bored, say driving or working a mundane repetitive job, having to sit for hours with boring relatives/roommates/needy friends, etc. Not that I am always the most fun to be around or whatever, but we all have to deal with boring social situations and smoking can help. Plus people will approach each other for a light, a spare smoke.

The first & hardest time I quit, I smoked weed exactly the same way you smoke a cigarette--exhaling immediately instead of holding it in as long as possible like you normally would with weed. It really helped!

I have read it is supposedly as hard to quit as heroin physically, not sure if it's true. But because it is legal and has long been an established and socially accepted addiction in tn the higher echelons of society, the nature and strength of the addiction has been glossed over entirely until just recently--and even then most of the fuss is about 2nd hand smoke, not the physiological means and power of addiction.

I quit & started at least 15 times, mostly from those goddamned clove cigarettes. 'Not really a cigarette, so it's OK to have just a few puffs.' nailed me by far most of those times.

It is really a pretty powerful drug. Give someone who isn't used to nicotine a dose equivalent to one cigarette, and they will not be functional. I remember one of the first times I smoked a whole cigarette as a teenager, I almost passed out. But the tolerance builds up at an incredible rate.

This is all so true. One of the easiest ways for me to strike up a convo with a new girl at a club or a guy at a party is to ask for a cigarette or a light. Especially now that you have to smoke outside everywhere, being banished from the party/bar/club becomes a bonding experience.

As someone who quit opiates, I can say that quitting smoking is a thousand times harder. I'm not going to walk down the street and smell the whiff of opiates coming from someone at a bus stop, or have someone offer one to me at a party (although I guess it depends what kind of bus stops and parties you go to). My doctor who prescribes me my opiate-substitution prescription has told me he has an easier time with his opiate-dependent patients than his nicotine-dependent ones. It's like alcohol. I would think quitting drinking would be a lot more difficult to quit than heroin.
