Default Moving cross country.. With no job.

    Hey guys!

I'm looking for advice (anyone that has done it, or anyone who lives in Southern California).
I live in Tennessee, but SoCal has been on my mind for about two years now. I recently graduated college and I know now is the best time to move so I can get settled wherever I'm going. No kids, no significant other, just 2 dogs (which are my children ). I have a bachelors degree in criminal justice. One year working in a correctional facility, and three years working as an assistant.
My question is.. Can I move there without a job lined up first? I would have about three months of expenses saved to have time to find a job. I would take the first job that I got (in order to get some money coming in) then look for a job in my field. I have tried applying to plenty of places but I get no call back (since I'm so far) and if I do, they say, "are you still in tennessee?.. Oh, well call us when you get here."
Has anyone ever done this? Any thoughts or advice on the subject? Is the economy so bad there that I won't find a job in that amount of time??

I would love y'all's feedback because I'm driving myself crazy stressing over it! Lol

& as far as dancing when I get there, I haven't danced in a couple years so I'm not looking to do that until, maybe, I get settled lol

i wouldn't move any place across the country without first going there, seeing how things are, lining up housing, and a job. now, if you're going to dance then i can see just winging it , as you will probably find a club that will take you ( providing you get a bit of info on how much the dancers make there and the cost of living). if i were you, i'd switch it around and start dancing while you look for steady work so you don't have to stress...even with having money in the bank, it can be VERY stressful trying to find vanilla work ( which can take a good while) while the clock is ticking and money is slowly draining away. also take into account that even after you find a job, you may not get your first paycheck for awhile.
that's just my two cents though, but i'm a super careful person

Are those savings you have enough for three months of your current expenses or based on the cost of living in SoCal? What's the job market like in criminal justice in SoCal? It's not unusual these days for people to spend much longer than three months job hunting, especially at the entry level. Are you open to dancing/camming/vanilla work outside your field if you don't land something in your field right away? It sounds like you have a lot of research to do, though there's certainly something to be said for just winging it and hoping for the best. Still, you want to make sure you don't get stuck in SoCal, so it may be wise to save up a bit more, do some research, take a trip or two out there to scope out the job prospects, and then make the move in a few more months when you're in better shape financially and have a better idea of what to expect.

I'd be applying to any job as soon as I got there. Waitressing/retail/etc.. And take the first one I could get while still looking for a better job continuously. I wouldn't mind dancing to make extra money but I'm a thicker girl now so I dont know if I could even get hired.
As far as expenses, it would be 3 months of all my expenses (based on researching the COL there).. Plus the money to get out there, register my car, get a CA license, security deposit on a place..

Do you think it'll take 3 months to find a vanilla job (or 2) to support myself?

This is a good point because your expenses in SoCal are nothing like what they are in Tennessee. I lived in Nashville for a couple months and was amazed at how cheap everything was, if you have enough for 3 months of TE expenses, then I would say you have enough for 1.5 months of SoCal expenses. If you decide to move to SoCal and strip or cam while looking for a job I'd say you're be OK, although be prepared that it's a dirty city with hardcore hustlers, but the money is good there (even though I know everyone says different on this forum, if you find a club that works for you you'll be fine). But you might be stretching it without willing to cam/strip. I don't know, I just moved across the world to London from SoCal and I didn't have a job lined up and the only reason I was OK with it was because I knew I could find one within a week at a club.

I lived in SoCal for 24 years and I can tell you it's not the easiest place to move to. You Southerners are warm, friendly people-- we Southern Californians are not. I know we appear all bubbly and what's up man on TV, but we're clicky, fake, superficial, unfriendly, bitchy/douchy people. Obviously not everyone is that way-- my best friends in LA are the nicest, sweetest, most down to earth people-- but LA is not an easy place to make friends, so be prepared for that when you move. It took me a long time of living there to find people that I trusted and were not a bunch of superficial assholes. I always said the thing I hated the most about SoCal is the people, but what do you expect when half the reason people come to the city is for the entertainment industry. My bff is probably the most outgoing, friendliest person I've ever met, and she moved from LA to San Diego for 6 months and made like 2 friends. It's one thing to move there and be going to university where you'll be flooded with people going through the same thing as you, it's another to move there and just go to work. I've known a LOT of people who came there for work and really struggled with finding a good set of friends and establishing a life.

What is it exactly about SoCal that attracts you so much? I really would suggest going out there and visiting to see what you think, because it's not like it is on TV. I don't want to discourage you from going, I will never move back there you could not pay me enough money, but my brother and all my friends will probably never leave because it is a wonderful place, the weather is amazing, it's gorgeous, you can ski in the morning and be at the beach in the evening without stepping foot on a plane, "winter" does not exist.. I lived there for a long time so have an extreme love-hate relationship with it, but everyone seems to have this idea that it's a Wonderland and it's not. I would hate for you to get there and be disappointed and be fully committed and stuck there. It may be the perfect place for you, but I just think it would be better to give it a try. And yes, the job market there is really shitty right now, especially for recent college grads applying for entry-level positions. It's just flooded with youngins.

Also, where exactly were you thinking of moving, cause SoCal is huge. San Diego, OC, LA, or the desert? Riverside? The valley? Farther up north like Santa Barbara? Where you decide to move will greatly impact your experience there AND your search for a job.

I say go for it, but have a plan to get back again if things don't work out. I've jumped in with both feet a few times in my life, and I've never regretted it in the long run. Sometimes it was a little rough in the short term. I've had moments where I wonder WTF was I thinking!?! But in the end, I'm still here and doing better than ever.

You're young. Have a little adventure! You could always fall back on dancing. You won't starve to death!

I live in SoCal. I think it's risky for you to just move out here with nothing lined up but with that said, it's definitely doable. If you're willing to get any job just to get you started then you'll be fine. There's always waitresses positions open. Even at a stripclub. It wouldn't hurt to go into a few clubs & see if they'll hire you. Trust me if you hustle your ass off you'll be just fine.
Have you ever been out here? I'm assuming you don't know anyone out here? Did you have a date in mind as to when you wanna move at all?
Also what part of socal where you thinking of?

I would absolutely save more money than what you have. When I moved to my current city, I thought I'd easily be able to find a job (I have a degree, years of work experience, etc.). I ended up being unable to even find a job in a grocery store. I was overqualified for the shitty jobs and the companies hiring for 'real jobs' just did not have their poles in the water. I spent eight months trying to find a job and had zero luck. The city I live in is extremely seasonal, and there just aren't many jobs for younger, less-experienced people.

This ended up being a good thing for me, because I decided to completely change industries and careers. But I had multiple years' worth of savings built up, and I would have felt very uncomfortable with any less than that. Companies can sense desperation; it's when you need a job that they become toughest to land.

It is NOT easy to find a waitress job at the strip clubs here, because when they have a spot open up, somebody always knows somebody- waitresses and bartenders have been known to walk out mid-shift and the manager already has 2 or 3 other girls to call in that same day.
There are telemarketing type companies around here that are always hiring, I have an ex who worked a place called AGR that's in orange county, and you earn a commission..
I would definitely recommend camming to fill in the cracks.. rent out here is right around a grand at least for a 1-bedroom (mine is 1700 but furnished and with utilities and parking)

audrey_k is telling truth! One thing I strongly advise you: If you are looking for a vanilla job, then get a California address, with a matching phone number asap. NOBODY will consider you without a local address. There are lots of privately owned mail services (like a PO box, but you get a street address) Since nobody ever actually mails a letter any more it shouldnt affect you job hunt.

This is important bc the town is constantly flooded with people who are following their dream or whatever and then leave after a short while. So people are biased against out of towner. Its really hard to get your first job in Los Angeles, then it gets much easier the longer you stay.

Also the address and phone should be in the area you hope to find work. Because the traffic is bad. So for example, if they see El Segundo on the resume, and the position is Glendale they probably wouldnt really consider you as seriously as an applicant who live closer.

As other people mentioned, LA isnt like on tv and people can be douchy. But its still worth a try! If nothing else you will have the satisfaction of knowing your small town can't hold you.

    I say 'Do it!'
I moved cross country to L.A. in my early twenties with a plane ticket, and only $100 in my pocket.
I had a magical journey there, and I knew I was destined to live there. I got a job right away from a newspaper ad, as a live-in caretaker for a sick, elderly ex-movie star, and I also had use of her car. The rest was easy, because I make friends easily.
I've always been a resourceful kind of person though, so if You have the right mind set, it should be fine. Plus, if it's not, just leave.
I spent over 20 years there, and have now relocated back east, due to family issues.
For me, L.A. has changed, I've changed, and obviously I'm not 20 anymore, so it's more difficult to deal with all the bullshit that is part of surviving in L.A.
Best of luck, and keep us posted!
    You can do it!!

I would save up for a few months of expenses and drop weight. Socal is flooded with hot skinny chicks. I worked in LA back in 09 as a chub chub and didn't make shit. Even the shitholes were full. I wouldn't even dare to venture into Socal the way I look now.

^^For Sure!! Even A size 4 in L.A. is considered a size 14! I was only 100 lbs. when I moved there, so dancing was easy to get into.

100% this IMHO, as well as what others have said about being realistic about living expenses and the ease of finding work. As a guy who has moved around a lot, IME it is easy to under-estimate how much money you will need and over-estimate how quickly you can fill the income void, especially when moving to a more expensive area. IMO you should take whatever time you need in order to find a job before you move. It might help if you flew out there for a couple of weeks and did some interviews and rental hunting in person.

My opinion might be different if you were currently dancing. I've met more than a few girls who were able to fly by the seats of their pants (happily in fact) so long as they could find a few clubs close by. But it doesn't sound like you are in a place, either emotionally or physically, where you could readily do that. In fact, the worst thing would be for you to get out there, burn through your savings in a short number of weeks, and find yourself going back to dancing out of sheer desperation. I've seen more than a few girls do that too and it rarely goes well.

    In any event, good luck!

Oh, side note.. If you want to use your degree in criminal justice, L.A. always has plenty of openings in that field.
As far as Your dogs are concerned, be aware that most places that allow dogs charge a separate rent(fee), for dogs, plus a huge deposit. most places don't even allow dogs either.

My experience in Lala land: When you have a perfect 10 willing to suck and fuck, you're fucked. Nobody can compete with that. It's like trying to assault a Bradley tank with a slingshot.

I don't know, I worked in LA for years and saw girls bank who weren't that attractive. I just think the idea that everyone is perfect in SCs there is another LA fantasy... I'm on the thin side but I don't think my face is a 10 by any means plus I'm a A cup and I was a top earner! It just definitely is high contact there so you have to be willing to get your hands dirty. Air dances won't cut it, you do have to let them touch your boobs and your butt and all that jazz. But it's also such a multi-cultural place that you can bank off non-white guys who are into a curvier figure. Some of the richest Persians you'll ever meet live in LA and they love thick girls.

On a side note, everytime I write something about LA on this board I still say "here" and have to go back and put a t to change to "there." I don't think I'll ever accept I don't live there anymore, not matter how long I'm in the UK.
